So why does it not get as large in the eastern landscape as it does in the Sierra?

Lots of factors as to why it won’t get as big, mainly is the soil chemistry in a cultivated setting-specifically lawns. The soil is likely a different p.h level, much more compacted, the mycorrhizal/ectomycorrhizal fungi that trees depend on to help absorb water and nutrients are often missing, lacking nutrients from the duff made from fallen leaves and needles decomposing, as well as usually lacking beneficial invertebrates and vertebrates. There’s also the factor of trees in a forest often grow much taller due to competing with other trees for light, and the trees it has to compete with at some spots in the the sierras are the tallest trees in the world. So it’s not as much the eastern U.S. that’s the limiting height factor(although elevation, humidity, and precipitation differences are all still definitely factors) but just being in cultivation.

Looks like some heavy woodpecker activity there...
