Star Trek Axanar, the whys of the odd design choices pointed out in TrekYards Episode 42. Saucer mounted nacelles instead of Engineering hull mounting. The Problem: These ships were designed in a time of invasion when the Federation was losing the war and the Klingons were using surprise attacks. Technology advances rapidly in war, but overhauls take a massive time commitment, shipyards are likely to be attacked while ships are being upgraded, resulting in losses of perfectly good ships. The Solution: Retain the escape & limited combat capabilities even as they are being upgraded. The How: Most of the upgrades are being done to the engineering hull. Instead of overhauling the ship in place, a new engineering hull is flown out to replace an outdated one or one severely damaged in combat. The ship undocks from its old engineering hull and docks with the new hull and is on its way with minimal reconfiguring needed. Why not both the engineering hull and nacelles at once? Warp drive is finicky and is time consuming to get right after integration and so is built right into the ship and left in place instead of being upgraded. The saucers would have smaller NX-01 style warp cores in them so that at need they could either run away or engage in limited power combat in the event that the new engineering hull has not yet been mounted or not working properly. But! How do you explain the design of the Constitution class? The Federation was losing, it was do or die time. It takes more time and effort to design and manufacture a detachable modular design from scratch than it does a simpler integrated design. You can also make the warp drive itself more powerful by routing the power directly from the warp core to the nacelles plus you also avoid the complicated routing of power from the removable engineering hull, merging it with the power from the saucer’s redundant warp core, shielding everything so that it doesn’t endanger the crew in the saucer, and back out to the nacelles. Ships go from compact to spread out The benefits to being compact: The more compact an object is, the more maneuverable it is. Your shields don’t have to absorb a hit that you can simply dodge. Warp cores were still relatively low powered compared to those in the Ares and Constitution classes, as such the size of the shield bubble they could maintain while being at combat strength was smaller. Shield efficiency was also lower earlier on, meaning that it took more power to produce a shield of a certain size and strength than later on. The benefits to spreading out: Having the engineering hull and nacelles nestled in close proved problematic with fields of fire, a vulnerability that the Klingons were exploiting. If you look closely at where the older ships could fire with each weapon and where the Ares and Constitution classes could fire, you will notice a real difference. Being compact also means that secondary explosions will damage otherwise intact parts of the ship, leading to the destruction of otherwise combat worthy ships. For example, if the Klingons blow up a nacelle that is tucked in close to the ship, and is right by the warp core, the exploding nacelle will take out the warp core, and the rest of the ship. With the Ares and Constitution classes, if the Klingons blow up a nacelle, the ship can’t go to warp but is otherwise still fully combat capable. Conclusion: With greater warp core power and shield efficiency as time goes on, the ability to withstand enemy fire becomes a more desirable trait than being able to dodge the enemy fire.

Going by TNG screen canon the phaser colour can be changed on the fly based on the weapons setting anyway, The Enterprise D fires off multiple different coloured bursts at a Borg cube as part of slowing down its ability to adapt to their phaser fire.

Originaly, the term "phaser" was an acronyme for "PHoton mASER", however, the meaning of the term later changed. Phasers are particule emiters who produce "nadion" particules over-excited into a plasma beam, and who's focused via superconductors. The reason why Andorian phasers are blue and Terran's orange/red is probably due to the nature of the particules emited (however both seems to use nadions) and/or maybe due to the frequency of the beam (depending their frequencies, phasers having different colours, as shown when phasers were remodulated against the Borgs) and/or maybe due to the nature of the superconductor elements (iron, sodium, carbon and sulfurs produce red-amber plasma, while copper produce a blue plasma) and/or due to the heat of the beam itself (orange stars are ~3000K while blue ones are ~15000K). I'm so glad that there's Vulcan ships in the movie, i always been a big fan of Vulcans. It broke my heart when JJ anihilated the planet. The Vulcan technology did'nt exploited as it should, mostly all content about them coming from ST:Enterprise, so i'm very glad to access new one! :D

Glad the Axanar team went with FASA-inspired source material rather than Franz Joseph/Starfleet Battles designs, shows they know who did and didn't do their homework. So many things wrong with FJ's Tech Manual and Blueprints, from Engineering erroneously located in the saucer section where the impulse deck should be, to no Photon Torpedoes (or any other internal system or structural supports) to ships like that Saladin, where they hang a flimsy Nav Deflector dish right where the lower sensor dome needs to be. Dis-info from Temporal? I once had the honor of meeting ST-TOS Art Director Mat Jeffries in his hangar in Santa Paula, and he had this to say on the subject; "Franz Joseph were a bunch of no-talent hacks who never consulted with me and Gene." (or even watched the show, apparently)

And, so, no Tugs? Also, the Destroyer/Scouts are 'common build' craft, with the CA's and Tugs, which you'll need in terms of standardization; Franz Joseph had the economic mold of a pre-war culture set correctly. I mention the 'Tugs' expressly, as, without a pod (which, btw, could be VERY, VERY well armed!), this is an over-powered, nimble, yet robust ship, or, your PERFECT Light Cruiser to pit against a D-6 (Think; NX-01 on a double-dose of Steroids!). It will need Photons, though... Yet, one pre-Fed/early-Fed ship class is missing; The Daedalus. It had a Spherical forward hull, a tubular aft hull, and two warp pylons, so it's mass was greater than a Constitution, great for deep-space exploring, but not so nimble in combat. As a 'Battle-wagon', it could be a fleet 'core' ship, but would want escorts. Not that it is an absolute, nor "needed" vessel, but it should be shown as part of StarFleet's early year composition.

Having read Peters' screenplay, no. I don't think that would have been a good move at all. Axanar was a scam. 1.2 million dollars - gone. It's gone. Woosh. They never made anything. One set, which was used by an entirely different group to make Interlude. Peters' didn't want to play ball with CBS. He pushed CBS to give guidelines, and now we have guidelines, and all the other Trek fan series had to pay the price. That was Alec's fault. CBS told him to knock it off with the chicanery. With the store that he had open with Axanar merch. Trying to use Star Trek to create his own production studio. He had delusions of grandeur, and when CBS warned him to stop, he continued anyway,. It was foolish, and destructive, and it hurt just about everyone. Most especially the fans. CBS was perfectly happen to let Star Trek fans continue to produce content on thieir own without issue. It was Alec Peters who pushed CBS to take the actions that they did.

Too bad that many of those ships of the line: the Hermes( which is as close to blasphemy as you can get for me. Change the registry to NCC-585 though, and we can just say this is what she looked like in the war. Then the Saladin can be even more armed to the teeth with external weapons pods), Geronimo, Korolev, and Magellan all use registries that contradict with some of those used by Masao Okazaki's and Bernd Schneider's designs, amongst other things, such as a few used by the Kearsarge class. Still, I'll probably avoid using those names for any designs I make for this era out of respect, so as to not preclude or contradict the possibility of their existence, when I get to trying to fill out some holes that are left. There are a few registry numbers from this era that are still waiting to be used. Another thing to note is that the Korolev can't be the class ship, since there is already a canon Korolev class from the 24th Century. The very last thing you want to do is use a class name that is already used in canon. Definitely makes the Ares using the same name as a Starfleet Battles' battleship design very much minor in comparison (though I very much like the Ares-class Battleship!). I have to agree about the Klingon ships for the most part, completely and totally. They were just...a damned disaster. And if they aren't added, even in the background, I won't shed a tear. I do want to see the Baton Rouge, Saladin, Loknar, and Larson, and wouldn't mind waiting a little longer to maybe even seeing some of Masao Okazaki's fantastic designs too. Oh and some of Starfleet Battles' designs. I think the Texas class should be active at this point, and maybe the Kearsarge. Old classic fan designs and semi-canon designs, that sort of thing. Then again, that is pretty much the Federation starship lineup I envisioned in the Four Years War in the first place! Still, as an artist, I can totally appreciate wanting to come up with completely new designs, as opposed to using designs that are already existing. And even I have to admit that the Kelvin-type design family makes for a very good prior-generation starship family, and also makes for a good basis for which to design ships for that era. And I also can't argue that what Richter cooked up doesn't look amazing, because as usual, they most certainly do.

I like most of what I've seen of Axanar but I gotta be honest... I am a little bit bugged that the Ares Class has the saucer section and phaser tech that looks so much like the ST:TMP Enterprise refit. Granted, I consider this a minor quibble and from what I've seen it's not as jarring as ST: Enterprise was vis-a-vis ST:TOS. Now, if you want to talk about alternate realities, ST: Enterprise had to be taking place in some kind of alternate reality! I never felt that it fit in that well with the other Trek shows. I think at this point a lot of older Trek fans feel that JJ's Star Trek is less Star Trek and more of his audition to get Star Wars Episode 7... Yeah, it didn't really feel like Star Trek -- especially after the last Trek film he directed.

Actually, no mater how much they work they work on this ships to make them look cool, they are all of WW1 concept. Only one in all the years of Star Trek, has carries only once been mentions and never shown. Even in this day and age, the carriers are the main war ship of every country, and those that don't have them wnant them, yet Star Trek still clings to big ship battle ship concept. It stands to reason that bees will drive away most anything that assaults them, except perhaps bears and humans, and even they can take only so much. Star Trek needs to update and modernize, it just big viewing screens and more electronics and lasers and phasers but carriers and lots of them! By the way, why are all these Start Trek fan made Star trek movies copying the old outdated Star trek concept anyway. Make a completely new space conception and not be concerned about copyrighting. Star Trek started it all but it does not have to end there!

It's quite easy to provide some sort of in-universe reason why it's all capital ships in star trek - maybe you need a huge reactor to shoot something strong enough to penetrate shields or something. Bigger issue is why there are no ground-based defences. Big honking laser on the ground would make some sense to me.
@nightlightabcd

iiiiiifggffggffgfgfg - There are indeed many improvements that could have been made to the Star Trek episodes. I guess one should keep in mind that the original Enterprise was not actually commissioned as a war ship but a ship of exploration with defensive capabilities, and the remakes over the years have tried to turn it into a war ship, apparently for more action with more and more "guns". But even with new series, they still cling to the WW1 big ship and big guns model basically! Actually, Star Wars and Battle Star Galactica .were actually more up to date, and I don'tr expect this to change, even the new Star Trek movies try to stick with the original concept.
