They were considered the start of a rebellious era of TV. Two guys who made super cheap cartoons about sensitive topics, and shit all over things that were considered too sacred to joke about. It's not as cutting edge as it was back then, because remember up until that point The Simpsons was as far a cartoon was willing to go. It seems weird to think of now, but this show blazed a trail and constantly pushed the line, so that now all of it seems normal.

You watch a "behind the scenes South Park" thing from the last couple years, these guys are still interesting, still exciting....but it's still depressing to see the inevitable disintegration of youth (which is not their fault). THESE guys....were vital, were vibrating with energy and optimism, had....fucking purple hair. Le sigh
