Donald Bryan You're insane, the book is one of the greatest westerns ever. It has way more stuff in it than the movie. Not that Lonesome Dove isn't the greatest western of all time, but Larry McMurray ' s Lonesome Dove books are amazing. Dead Man's Walk is great because it's their origin and a great first adventure. Comanche Moon is the movie where you find out just why Clara hated Woodrow so much, because she was ,actually good friends with Newts mother, Maggie.,who became a respectable woman. you find that Deets and Pea Eye are several years younger than GUS and Call. Newt and Deets were buddies from when he was little. Streets of Laredo was the last book. 20 years later. Call was a bout to hunter ans Pea Eye assisted him between working g on his farm he shared with his wife, Lorena, formerly Ms. Woods. They have five kids.

Greatest movie ever, Gus was an incredible character. He had bad habits and shirked menial duties but when things got tough he was there and was hard as steel. Woodrow on the other hand always maintained a hardness demeanor and ran a tight ship. While Gus seemed to "play" and have "fun" more, it gave you a sense that he wasn't a hard man, however it was clear Woodrow couldn't push/boss Gus, simply too much history/respect between them. They knew where each stood! Woodrow was Woodrow and Gus was Gus! I love how Gus pushed Woodrow and called him our for being so morose or serious. ha As Gus was dying, Woodrow tried to boss Gus and he got called out by Gus "I'm the one man you don't boss" and you see Woodrow immediately back off (something he wouldn't do to any other man alive). An incredibly dynamic friendship and a mutual respect that ran so deep between those two. They were truly Yin/Yang!

Donald Bryan what a great comment. Duvall's performance transcends review or duplication. Duvall is sooo Gus that it's impossible to imagine Mcmurtry didn't have Duvall in mind when he wrote the book. (he didn't ) This character is so decent and Duvall just makes that fly off the screen. Doesn't always get the recognition it or he deserves because it was made for TV. Easily in the top two of western performances. Only John Wayne could be Ethan Edwards and only Robert Duvall could be Gus. Both iconic westerns matched by towering leading men.

While Gus McCrae is loosely based upon the real-life Oliver Loving, it's clear from period writings (letters and writings of Loving's family and friends) that the personalities of the character and the real person were VERY different. McMurtry did a great job of using Loving's life to shape his fictional character, but that's what Lonesome Dove's Gus McCrae was...a creation of McMurtry's fertile mind. And yes, I actually heard Larry McMurtry explain exactly that, in person.

Lonesome Dove is my favorite Western. It's based on the first two "cowboys" in American history and their fate. Two best friends, one more experienced, hosting the first cattledrive. A handicapped best friend and the less experienced one branch off for a bit and get in a skirmish with natives. The less experienced one gets a leg injury. The handicapped one leaves to get the cattledriver's help. He crosses an entire desert and almost dies, just like Pea Eye. When the best friend hears, he find to safety. They amputate his leg, but in the end he dies. The surviving friend brings him all the way back to Texas to bury him. Woodrow buried Gus in Lonesome Dove.
