At the 1967 Nationals in Washington, Lewis won the championship by defeating Mitchell Bobrow in the semi-final and beating Frank Hargrove 3-2 in the finals. Previously, Lewis defeated Hargrove in New York City at 'Henry Cho's Karate Tournament'. During that time, he also defeated Chuck Norris.

I fell in love with Joe Louis back in the 60s when I saw the cover of a karate magazine where he was doing a flying kick with his shirt off wearing his signature white pants with the stars and stripes pattern on the side of the leg. He look like a bodybuilder his hair was flying his teeth were graded he look like a superhero! I immediately brought the magazine determined To know his identity. In the magazine he was doing an article if I’m not mistaking on angular attack that I found fascinating. He was such an articulate expressive writer and that’s what Impressed me even more than his physical prowess. He was an intellectual he wasn’t just some caveman he put thought into what he did and how he did it in the technique wise he didn’t physically in my opinion look aesthetically appealing performing his art I knew that mentally he was firing on all cylinders and that’s why he was winning and that’s why I respected him. I was thrilled when Panther productions made a series of videotapes on his seminarsAnd I got to hear him in real time. My biggest regret was not meeting him even though I found out later he was a regular speaker in New York City at David Jameses school near the world trade center where I used to work. I could kick myself for not signing up for a seminar when he would’ve been so easy to attend

Sorry I’m posting so much but I think it’s better than me just doing one big run on sentence. When I was competing I tried my best to “Channel Joe Lewis” whenever I did my Sidekick. For me he became synonymous with the Side kick even more than Bruce Lee. I saw a film with Jo hits this guy in the side or hip socket with a side kick that literally lifted the guy up and out of the picture frame. It was fast and it was powerful I really tried my best to imitate it and became fairly successful and feared doing it. Jo taught me the secret was doing thousands of repetitions on a daily basis and that’s probably the best advice that you can give a beginning karate student stop your hero worship and go to work and that’s what will make you successful. As a result in my small circleMy nickname amongst my peers was “technician” that name was given to me by my instructor who recognized immediately my cerebral Approach to fighting and setting up my opponents. I owe that to Joe Louis

Never one-one met him, but was within a pace of him at a big tournament, he was next to Jeff Smith, while Ray McCallum was fighting. I called out a funny quip (unrepeatable in this PC age), when Ray went in so close after a clinch he kissed his opponent, that both Joe and Jeff laughed at. So I made Joe laugh once! RIP this greatest of the golden ages of both point and contact karate.

The guy that that Joe never trained under Bruce needs to check his history. It was reported and and documented by a news reporter. Bruce taught him and other champions of that day.

It’s clear that Bruce did teach Louis some things. I remember a specific article in one of the Karate or Kung Fu magazines where joe mentions As well as demonstratesBruce Lee’s five angles of attack Direct angle attack, indirect angle attack, arm and leg immobilization angular attack, broken rhythm angular attack, combination angular attack. If memory serves, Jo commented that you don’t know where Bruce Lee got these concepts from but they were effective and that he used them in sparring and he demonstrated them brilliantly. I wish I still had the article but my jealous brother in a fit of teenage childhood rage through all of my classic Karate magazines into the incinerator after an argument with me. Needless to sayThat put a strain on our relationship! L O L but that’s another story

1967 Grand National in Kansas City it was easy to tell who drew his name as opponent as they would show their desperation. When it was Joe’s turn, he would be napping on folding chairs and they would awaken him to compete I was watching when Joe and. Wally Slokie Canadian champion and slipped into a back room where the shared some advanced techniques. Amazing speed and agility.

Louis would’ve been a great martial arts star and should’ve been but because of his ego it didn’t happen and it’s his own fault. Hollywood is a small community you can develop a reputation for being a troublemaker especially early in your career that comes later once you’re in establish store. The reason why Chuck Norris who in my opinion at Lester ability was able to go much further it’s because Chuck had a reputation for being a genuinely nice guy. People will be doing more for you because you’re nice and they like you then they’ll ever do if you’re arrogant and think you deserve something. This is a guy so arrogant that he didn’t even want to lose to Bruce Lee on screen which cost himThe role that would’ve catapulted him into stardom like it did Chuck Norris

Gets me how Brcue Lee is always mentioned along side true "greats" like Joe Lewis. A man who truly earned his achievments and should have been a "MA icon" (along with a few others).....not Bruce Lee....whom I'll remember as a MA film star from the early 70's. Not as a "martial artist or great". Odd there's no photos or footage of Lewis training with Lee. Why would Lewis train with someone who never competed in MA on any level.?

Glad that you have the courage to even say that. I agree with you his technique is not that good especially when you compare him to other martial artists who also fought full contact like Bennie The jet, Chuck Norri, Bill wallace, an old school martial artists Paul Visio. What joe did have was Intensity intelligence and focus. He had a limited fighting style but what he worked on the sidekick the forehand strike he could pretty much land it at Will and that’s what counts in a fight. I once heard him in one of his training videos till his class when you throw this technique I don’t care if you’ve got good technique if you’ve got bad technique your goal is to hit the target and if you do that you’re successful. You can’t argue with that. I feel Jo’s lack of good looking technique may alsoAlong with his ego, have hindered him from being a martial arts Movie star. The one defining thing about Martial arts actors is that they all look good doing their art on the screen with amplifies any flaws. Notice how an actor like Bob wallWho can really fight, doesn’t look aesthetically appealing doing his art on the screen, yet incredibly, someone as fat as Samo hung DOES. It’s no mystery that film rolls went to Chuck Norris, Benny the jet who starred opposite the great Jackie Chan, and even Bill Wallace instead of Joe Louis. I saw Jo years ago in a film called Jaguar lives and was really disappointed by his showing. I was really rooting for him as I was a big fan still amThis is just an honest criticism
