Lineage Percussion performs the premiere recording of "Triple Helix" by Cody Brookshire on 12/23/2016. This marimba trio was composed specifically for the members of Lineage Percussion.
About this complex polytemporal piece, Cody writes the following:
"You are enchanted by a small object, tangled and distorted, incomprehensible. You step closer and a few attributes sharpen as it grows in size. You step closer again and develop a vague sense of its structure. Closer still, and previously faint embers are now illuminating the life-size object. Closer, and the architecture is in focus. Closer, and stark details wrap around meticulously. Closer, and you are now surrounded: you are inside it, marveling.
Triple Helix is a polytemporal piece for three marimbas that I composed with the notions of investigation, discovery, and wonderment in mind. As the piece progresses, fragmented melodies extend and beautify, unusual harmonies amend and clarify, and rhythmic complexity oscillates towards synchronicity as time seems to close in on itself. As I composed this, I entertained a thought that often preoccupies my mind: zooming into a mysterious thing, physical or not, so closely that it becomes the environment, my entire world. I imagine that, by means of this transformation, I might gain knowledge or meaning, both practical and beyond price - perhaps even a fleeting sense of the divine.
