Yeah bikes are lovely, till they're not . Then they're a white elephant. It's like everything else. If you have plenty of money, it's not that bad. But when you're a working stiff, it can truly suck. Hope it went well.👍

Happened to me on my 2006 scrambler,right hand cylinder started cutting out now and again then died completely.Had already replaced coil plugs and leads .So put it down to either pickup or black box .Reasoned if it was the pickup both cylinders would go. Bit the bullet and bought a new black box ,cured problem .The black boxes are different for the carbed and injected bikes . Hope you get it sorted regards Kingo.

Here's the best thread on Trat forum regarding pickup coil issues: www.triumphrat.net/air-cooled-twins-technical-talk/158995-ignition-pick-up-coil-crank-position-sensor-nerdy-and-boring.html If I recall, the pickup failure typically happens with heat...plastic casing expands and fails the wiring. Can be tested off bike using a pot of boiling water. Usuallly just best to replace. You may be able to patch the sump with an epoxy patch (the metallic type "JB Weld" for example). But certainly running it to your machinist for a few blobs of alooy weld followed by grind down & paint....done.

hey buddy!! funnily enough i believe that link is one i have book marked for reading!!! there's a chap called forchetto on there that is a mine of knowledge!!! - i had a coil go on my t3 daytona 900 and had the same fail as it heated up- so this weekend will be a systematic work through to find out what has failed!! thanks for the link!!

Hey Johnny, do you happen to know any tricks to adjusting a single throttle cable for give more slack? I've maxed out the adjuster nut...and still need a wee bit more...so trimming the outer casing seems needed. Can this be done without having toe remove the inner cable (and thus remove end nipple, re-soldering afterwards)?
@johnnycactus0
6 жыл бұрын
interesting one that- i've never done it- i guess in theory it would work- i think you can get slinky throttle cables you trim to size yourself though for a reasonable price. that might give you a bit more wiggle room so it's not maxed out?

Bad luck with the sump ! Major bummer - but it has to be worth repairing - especially if you can use one from the American in the meantime. Any repair CAN'T be more than the cost of a new £250 unit... I had a vaguely similar issue years ago, filed the edges of the crack to definitely remove all traces of oil in the crack (I removed the crack !) and filled it in with Araldite. Luckily, worked great. Best of luck.

That walk of shame, a grown man pushing a full size bike in rush hour! If you struggle finding a welder and are forced to get a replacement, could be worth giving Carl Rossner (Triumph dealer in South London) a call to see if they have one in their used spares. Couple of years back I needed a fuel tank for my Speed when that sprung a leak and they had one on the shelf and in the right colour too, stroke of luck!

Quick poke on EBay and only 2 current listings, one in America and the other in Australia!! You've probably seen them already though: 182999652789 152827548203 Part numbers cross reference ok looking at World of Triumph, all Bonnies (carb and EFI) / Americas have the same sump part number, only the T120's are different (but I'm no Bonnie expert and do not fully know the range).

A lot of bad luck mate. Pushing the bike uphill, that really sucks! And the crack in the sump.. Hope you can weld it. A original sump is pricey! But not want to profit from your bad luck but I'm quite interested in how to get the sump out. Mine leaking to on my Bonnie trough the seal. And most people say that the engine has to come out to take the sump of and replace the seal. Because the frame that's sits in he way? But isn't there an easier way? Also the actual problem of the cylinder lost will be interesting. Good luck brother. Take care.
@johnnycactus0

i'll def film it all mate- i haven't removed just the sump only whole engine so it'll be interesting- i'm hoping removing the frame cradles will allow removal in situ...can't remember off the top of my head! i'll keep you posted!

You would think that with 4 bikes lurking on your premises you would have at least one that was rideable! It sucks when every thing seems to be going wrong when you don't have the time to actually get on with stuff. Hopefully you find parts that aint going to cost an arm and a leg.

If you have another bike with the same cdi box part number put it on and try. It will take you 2 minutes to check instead of pulling apart half the electrics.

Roy Archibald yeah that's the plan at the weekend- ill canabilise the other bikes in the elimination process!! Ha ha!
@RABBITMIXO

johnnycactus0 just try the Cdi box first. If you start running on one cylinder after 10 miles (when the bike gets warm) it's the tell tale sign. The ignition coils in general gradually break down, you can feel them breaking down whilst coasting or riding at a slow constat speed before they completely spit the dummy. If it is a coil(s) change them for PVL German ones they're beefier and half the price of Triumph ones but try the Cdi box first. Check also that nothing is touching or interfering with the Cdi box.
@johnnycactus0
6 жыл бұрын
Roy Archibald thanks Roy! I'll try that. Although I'm hoping the cdi box is ok- or it'll be an expensive weekend!!

Hey JC. Seemed a bit cruel to like your video, but you know what I mean eh !?. Not much to add here, more likely pick up sensor. As you said in video Triumph did change specs from 1mm to .8mm . this was because they were having warranty claims for coils. Gave similar problem. I have spare coil you could borrow if needed. Next county up from you I believe?
