I owe you a ton of likes and comments. 3 or 4 years ago I watched this video and was able to rule out all these issues; turned out to be my ignition switch needing cleaning. 2 years ago, I used this video to check everything again; turned out to be my pick up coil. Today, I am revisiting this video because I spent half of yesterday doing bleep tests and measuring resistance. Thus far seems like everything is pointing to my ICU...I need to find someone willing to let me borrow theirs :) so I don't have to blow $300 to find out it wasn't the problem. Either way, currently have a total no spark issue. Cheers!

Excellent video, I have a 2003 speedmaster, I have a problem with the motorcycle, it turns on but after a few minutes it turns off, after a while it turns on again but after a while it runs out of spark and after a while it starts again turn it on, what it detected is that the pick up coil was not sending the current to the cdi, I don't know if that's it or if the harness has a short, but I'm going to guide you with your video, regards.

What does it feel like when the bikes drops a cylinder for just a second... cause mine is acting weird at idle from time to time. I'l be sitting at a light and all of the sudden the tach drops 500 rpms then goes back to normal 1000 - 11000... or it'll shut the bike off if the idle isn't set high enough.

Hi there! A bonnie will have one ignition coil- scramblers and americas have 2- and as you say that's under the tank. there is also a pick up coil - that's on the end of the wire that disappears into the right side engine casing for the stator.

Hey Johnny, is there an easy way to know if the ignitor is gone? I measured my coils and had 0,7 on both on the primary and 295k and 290k on the secondary ones. the spec says 15k, but I'm not sure what you measured on the second coil...I believe 275 or so???? Was that coil okay then?

It's a tough one to troubleshoot the ignitor- as far as I'm aware it's a case of swapping it for a known working unit and seeing if the issue disappears.

Would have thought you were going to put the pickup coil in hot water to check it for open circuit failure when hot. That's what the Trat forum recommends and it fits your problem of dropping a cylinder when warmed up. Anyway, good find on the ignition coil. Hope it fixes it for you. My question though, if this was faulty, how could it give you a spark at that plug when you tested against the cylinder head with the plugs out?,
@johnnycactus0

i think if i hadn't had bad readings off the coil cold i'd have done the boiling water (i mentioned that in the vid) as for spark i can only guess that it's working and producing spark cold but breaks down as it heats up??
@sansuperjuan

I have a similar problem, when the bike warm up it loses power and start the backfires. I measured the two coils, one had 4 Mega homs and the other was open, however the bike started and rider at least five minutes after to failed. I suppose that although the coil is open, but there is high voltage circulates through the open secundary coil creating high voltage arcs, but the heat modifies the properties of the coil. the check we do is mesure the resistive of the coil, but the coil works inductively. surely if the open coil were the primary it would not work, in the primary coil we have low voltage, but in the secundary high voltage. I also checked the coils in hot and cold and the resistance was different. regards

My 1996 Thunderbird randomly wont start after I rode for 1-3hrs. Battery is OK and if I put the bike in second gear and push I can get it to start. The mechanic already replace the solenoid, so this shouldn't be the problem (or maybe he replaced it with and old faulty one)? When I push the start button I hear the click of the solenoid so it should work I guess? Can this problem be caused by heat? One day after the solenoid was replaced I had the same problem but after not using the bike for 3-4 days, I could start it again with no problem. Should I replace the pickup coil?
@johnnycactus0

It's always hard trying to guess over the internet mate, but systematically work through each thing trying to test. ignition coils break down under heat- that would be my first guess- check your starter motor is spinning- and then pick up coil. I'd be inclined to guess the ignition coils, especially if they are originals!

Hi I have a speedmaster 04 carburettor model. When driving it is as if it jumps a ignition every once in a while, it can also go out completely, but can start immediately and move on. Someone who knows what the problem is ?? Sincerely. Jan from Denmark.
@johnnycactus0
5 жыл бұрын
when you say jumps a ignition- do you mean drops a cylinder? stops running on one cylinder and then comes back on?? could be a faulty coil that breaks down as it heats up or faulty ignition leads. check all connections and test as in the video. you may find the coil will do it occasionally but if it's failing it will keep getting worse. Mine has done it in the extreme wet though with new coils so it could be shorting somewhere too....

I am having same problem, intermittent loss of power to right hand cylinder, lasts a short while then comes back again, although lasting longer and longer on one cylinder before it rectifies.
