Triumph did not have a song with a negative vibe to it. Every song was positive by design. Gil Moore and Rik Emmett the two principle writers felt there was enought negative in the world and their music should be an escape from that, and to be something that lifts a person up. Magic Power is a song about just that. "She climbs into bed, She pull the covers overhead And she turns her little radio on She's has a rotten day So she hopes the DJ's gonna play her favorite song It makes her feel much better, Brings her closer to her dreams A little magic power makes it better that it seems"

Triumph was actually quite popular in the 80s. Lots of their songs, including this one, were played a lot on rock radio. They always drew comparison to Rush. Triumphs music is more straight ahead rock, as opposed to Rush, but Rik Emmett, singer and very underrated guitarist sounded a bit like Geddy Lee. Moreover, Triumph and Rush were both trios and both from the Toronto area of Canada. Always seemed like Triumph were living a bit in Rush’s shadow. But Triumph rocks.
@garytate3075

If you really listen to Rik and Geddy you'll find that they don't really sound alike, I've never known any vocalist that divides opinion like Geddy Lee, Rik is far superior in my opinion.
@vitus33

@@garytate3075 I agree. I’m more of a Rush fan (early Rush) but Rik has a better voice IMO. But bc of the high register of both singers, the unfair comparisons between Rush and Triumph were inevitable- both being Toronto based trios.

I discovered Led Zeppelin in July of 1979 and since then, I’ve had a TON of SECOND favorite bands; Purple, Doors, Eagles, Stones, Beatles, The Who, U2, Rush, Petty, Scorpions, UFO, Floyd, Crue, Sabbath just to name a few. Most of which I’ve seen in concert and so, in 1981, I bought this album on vinyl - it is a GREAT album! Preceding this album was “The Game” and following it was “Never Surrender”. Three excellent albums. In May of 1983, Steve Wozniak, the inventor and co-founder of Apple Computers had a 4 day festival in San Bernardino near Los Angeles called “The US Festival”. The lineup was; Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen. Going to the Heavy Metal night, Triumph WAS my second favorite band because of the passion in their music and Rik Emmet’s guitar playing and voice. They were a Canadien trio who was always being compared to Rush who used be compared to Led Zeppelin. I strongly suggest you preview, Triumph’s “Ordinary Man”, “Magic Power”, “Lay it on the Line”, “Hold On” and “Never Surrender”. The Scorpions took the show and then became my new second favorite band…kzitem.info/news/bejne/0mZ7z2Gqk4Z1pWU
