That IC can be found on ebay (available from 5 different sellers). It would be nice to repair this unit, since it's in almost mint condition and there's probably nothing else wrong with it except the idler tires that can be treated with Rubber Renue.

The problem with eBay parts is they are usually pulls and half are bad. I went thought that a few years ago and got one bad part after another. Spent more of shipping charges. Ordered a 10.00 part and it was shipped fed ex. Fed ex charged 37.50 broker charges. Part turned out to be a pull. Contacted seller. He wanted old one back and sent me another. Jerk sent it FedEx again. Another 36.50 in broker charges. Now the part was 85.00 and because I had quoted customer 100 for the repair including parts that was all they were going to pay. Made no money on that one. 2 hours on the job and 3 weeks pissing around to get a part and it was used. This has happened more than once. To the point that I no longer trust any parts for sale on eBay. Even parts described as new many times are counterfeit. Been burned so many times.

The big problem with these disk drive units is the rubber gets hard. Yes you can treat it with rubber renew but the big problem is quite often it leaves the surface uneven which dramatically increases wow and flutter.

@@12voltvids I understand your point of view, remember the video where you got some bad STKs for an amplifier. But I must say I also bought ICs from ebay for restoring vintage equipment and never got a bad one. I avoided the ones from China, only bought from Europe and US sellers with good feedback. So I would say, from my experience, although I do know there are fake ICs out there, they can be avoided. Also the price may be indicative of quality: fake parts tend to be very cheap (like 1-2$ compared to 10$ or more for a genuine one) and most of them come from China.

@@valentinc22 let's not talk about that mixer. Lost my shirt on that one. In addition to broker charges PayPal dropped the ball and took funds from empty bank account rather than funds that were in PayPal account (because those funds unknown to me were awaiting approval) Bank charges me 48.00 over draft as that account was only used to receive funds and immediately transfered out. That repair i lost money on. 6 months after the owner picked it up he demanded a refund because he could hear a slight hiss in headphones that he said was never there before. I could never replicate the "noise" and just to keep him from going to the city and reporting me as running a business from home i refunded him to make him go away.

+1 to replacing the IC if possible as others are showing. You know you have that part of ya that wants to do it just because because. No further explanation needed. :)

A growing issue on such things. I have a bunch of dead WM-F65 and F15's for their spare parts as I have some that still work. But it's really just borrowed time I guess

I have a TC-520CS that I have to find 3 new belts for & they are not very common at all.(SCX5.6,SCX9.2,& SCY12.7. I found pretty close size belts,except for the SCY12.7(counter belt)& the lack of tension from counter makes it play tapes wobbly..& I can't adjust speed unless I change motor pulley too. All 3 belts have to be exactly correct sizes,or it's never going to work properly,or be correct speed....sucks kinda.

I just went & found the SCX9.2,SCY12.7,but they only had SCX5.5 instead of SCX5.6..so that's as close as I am going to get & hope it corrects the speed & wobble

You win some & lose some.I got a old Sanyo suitcase stereo(G-2615N-2)that I got working by making new AC plug,new belt & could adjust speed on motor.Turntable was slow,so I hooked a return spring from a lawnmower to put tension on rubber wheel to get 33&1/3 rpm.

I have the same problem, and found this video really useful - no sawtooth. I did wonder if the TC-D5 would be consigned to the junk heap but, like another comment, I found that the chip IS available. About $15 from China (inc shipping), so have a couple on order via eBay. I'm not in it commercially, but would like the TC-D5 working again as it's been an indispensable work-horse. And perhaps I've been lucky, but I've not had any problems with a number of ancient chips bought from China.

What about from a 3v AC adapter?Will that power it up?Sometimes with walkmans,I am able to still get power bypassing batteries
@12voltvids

I was testing using a power supply. And the adapter for this is 6v. No the chip is dead. No sawtooth output to pump the comparator. No servo correction voltage no motor run. Servo circuits are a pain in the ass. Also this board is so dense with parts. Very hard to work on. Then there is all the fine wires soldered to the board just waiting to break off. Soon as i found it was not a mechanical problem which is what i expected going in the repair costs go through the roof. These ones were clearly not designed for repair. No silk screening on the board or anything to aid with component location. I was really hoping that the motor drive transistor was bad, but the IC is dead and there are probably other surprises too. Like idlers and belts. These things are real Pandora's boxes once you get in. I usually say no when someone asks me to look at them and the ones I do accept I only do so with the understanding that I do not guarantee that i will be able to do anything. Last thing i want to do it get married to an old piece of equipment.

Well the ball is in his court now because initially it was thought that the mechanism was just gummed up. That will also be the case for sure and belts. Going to become much more expensive if he wants to proceed. Yes these were good recorders in their day but a cheap home deck that can be had for 25.00 will do a better job. The flywheel on these also have problems so one has to keep that in mind. If it was mine i probably wouldn't be spending money on it.
