If you don’t tow, 17 or 18” wheels with those same tires you have will ride a heck of a lot better. People don’t realize how much cushion a larger sidewall will provide you.

Almost impossible to get same diameter tires in 17s vs 20s.very limited sizes for 17s on ht tires. 18s have more options

I love 18’s cuz I tow all summer and hunt in the fall. Best of both worlds.

I also got 20 inch, lots of study came to same results. 40,000 miles and use on street, pulling RV 3X a Year. At 150,000 will convert to "35" and make my dream Overlanding truck with off road overlanding Small RV.

IMHO I don’t care for wheels larger than 18” on a 1/2 ton truck. For DRW trucks 19” tires are fine but nothing larger. I realize I might be part of the minority I just don’t care for how those larger wheels look gaudy. Yet I’ve only purchased aftermarket wheels once and that was way back in 1996 for my 1989 F-150. A set of Cragars Outlaw II wheels. I haven’t changed the stock steel wheels on my “19 Tundra SR5. They get the job done.

I'll take the 17s for snow. You get more of a floatation effect with lower air pressure on a tire with more sidewall.

it is all about matching up your tire/wheel combination with your needs. My truck happened to come with 17" wheels, so I use the LT245/70 -17 tire and it has worked just fine. Had my truck come with an 18 or 20, I am sure I would be able to find a tire that matches with that and also meets my needs. My previous tow vehicle had a 19" wheel, and that was not an issue either, although I did use a lower profile P rated tire on it, with no issues. As always, safe travels

!00% on matching your needs, if I had 17's, I'd have LTs. My issue is just when people claim everyone that has a truck needs 17s and everyone needs LT tires. Application of the vehicle always dictates needs.

FWIW, GM trucks with the max trailering package have about 1200 lbs additional towing package when equipped with 20” wheels vs 17 or 18” wheels. Not sure about other manufacturers. You’re absolutely correct here, though - there’s a reason the manufacturers give you so many options.

Yep, match the vehicle to the needs. Every half-ton but the new Tundra. It only comes with skinny tires, no tow hooks and 3.31 rear axle. All designed for fuel economy.

I love the 20 inch wheels on my Limited. I may switch to an OR wheel at some point but still factory toyota. I tow 6 days a week 7 months a year and the 20s have given me 0 issues. I do wonder if id have a smoother ride with more sidewall.

You might get smoother, but may feel a little more unstable unless going with a 10 ply tire

I just recently went to the 10 ply Defender on our 2021 Tundra DC , because I not only tow our 7k lb camper and other slightly heavier loads, but it is also occasionally a farm truck. After driving over soy bean stubble I had a flat with my p rated Michelins that came on the pickup new. The 18 inch 10 ply tires do work good for what I do, but , as you stated, they reduce mileage. It looks like it might cost me as much as 2 mpgs on my hiway drives. I am disappointed to see it might be that much. Does that seem possible to you? I have always ran E rated tires and do feel it is a must on the roads and the terrain I drive on. I have only recently found your channel and through reading noticed I, coincidentally , have our rig set up much like yours. Added rear sway bar, air bags-Air Lift, snap on mirror extentions, etc. I am in the process of pricing an added transmission oil cooler at the dealership we got the Tundra, even though, the mechanics there don't think it's really necessary. You have probably already commented on this , but I would like to hear Your thoughts on that subject, please? Thanks for all the effort you put into supplying useful information !

I also have a '21 Tundra. I have added the transmission cooler and measured transmission temps before and after. Large differences while towing and regular driving in mountainous areas. If you are not going to tow at all, I would say it probably isn't necessary. Any towing and it's absolutely necessary. The truck might make it to the end of the power train warranty but would probably fail not long after. Toyota eliminated the cooler purely as a cost savings action and took a calculated risk. It's very easy to install and under $350 in parts if you do yourself.

Appreciate the comments. Think @truthjustuce summed up the cooler perfectly. Yeah, if I was using as a Farm Truck I'd have 10 ply E-rated tires too. Just have to eat the mpgs.
