Tuesday night, April 30, 2024, at 11:30 p.m., Riverside Fire Department responded to reports of a truck
that slammed into an apartment building at 7450 Northrop Drive (Mission Grove Park Apartments) and
severed a Fire hydrant and a natural gas line. When firefighters got on scene, they found a truck that
had slammed into the building and hit a high pressure gas line, causing it to rupture. Due to the truck
still running and the amount of natural gas exiting the line, fire fighters had to spray the area with water.
They quickly summoned SoCal Gas to respond. SoCal Gas arrived on scene about an hour later and were
unable to shut off the gas line, so they evacuated the building and requested a crew to dig up the gas
line, where, they said they could access the shut off valve. Several hours later (about 3 a.m.) the crew
finally arrived. It was estimated it would be several more hours until they would have the line dug up.
Firefighters used a high-pressure hydrant and thousands of gallons of water on the valve for about
3 hours straight due to SoCal gas being unable to shut off the gas. Several families, some with children,
were evacuated from the building and were waiting in the parking lot for SoCal gas to fix the issue and
allow them back into their residence. The driver of the truck was apparently distracted by their phone
when they hit the building and were released from the scene. Several residents were frustrated
because SoCal Gas didn’t have an emergency shut off valve that they were able to access without
digging up the gas line.
