Ray is generally the favorite this season, but I really resonated with Ani the most. The season did not meet the bar of season 1, but that’s a high bar. On subsequent viewings, this season really started to click with me despite its flaws. Solid gold. It’s what they almost had.

i wouldn't give this a 10/10 but for people to say it's unwatchable is insane to me, characters in this season being cornered most of the time and the way they dealt with it felt really human and good idk so i would say it is worth watching and getting to know these protagonists. frank surviving the shithole he was pushed in, rey trying for his kid and admitting he wasnt a good person, paul really wanting to have a family idk it's just nice

It’s totally insane, legit one of the most overhated seasons of tv ever imo, if it was its own miniseries and not the follow up to s1 I think it would’ve been received much better. It’s a flawed season of tv but it’s still a good season and good Neo noir story.

A great Vince Vaughn movie where he plays a serious/non comedy role is Cell Block 99. Highly recommend.

Now that I rewatched this series with you guys, I'm even more of the opinion that these follow up seasons just get a bad rep because the first one was so awesome. This was a good season, and if I remember correctly the third one is better than this one, yet people shit on them because they're not the first season. EDIT: But yes, I also agree that there are flaws here. And I also felt like the romance didn't fit their characters, like you guys.

It’s totally true, if s2 was its own miniseries it would’ve been received way better I’m convinced, it’s flawed but still good tv. S3 was damn good tv too, at least that one was well received but still years later people are back to always saying how only s1 is good which is just ridiculous, just because s2&3 aren’t s1 maybe the best season of tv ever doesn’t mean they aren’t good, s2 legit has to be like the most overhated season of tv that I’ve ever seen. 2 and 3 truly suffered big time from having to follow up s1, if they were both their own hbo miniseries I think they would be looked at far differently but since they aren’t s1 people just act like they aren’t good for some reason

Season 2 suffered from sequel syndrome, it tried too hard to be better than one instead of just trying to be its own great story. Still better than many other shows.

Do true detective 3 it really brings back the first season vibes but maybe not quite as great but universally agreed that its way better then season 2. Season 2 is good but the others are great (especially the 1st)

So, I like the idea they were going for in TD season 2. This super noir "Chinatown" style show, but they really didn't nail it. There is some good stuff, but it's such a drop in quality (especially in dialogue) compared to season 1. Season 3 is really good though, still not as good as season 1 but better than 2 for sure. Looking forward to Night Country.

It is crap on its own. It is confusing, it is cheesy in a really awkward way, the screenwriting is bad, the characters are unnatural and unrelatable, and the story is boring.

So you finished it. I think without season one acting as a bar for the show, season two is a pretty good retelling of Chinatown. Vince Vaughn’s direction I trunk was horrible because some of the choices are baffling. Thanks for posting all of it though! ❤️❤️

First off, you guys are such an endearing couple and I've been digging your reactions to True Detective and The Boys, so thanks for your content and keep it coming. But wowie huh, Season 2 True Detective, kinda bonkers It's definitely messier than Season 1 but I find this season to be extremely charming when it's good and completely ridiculous when it's bad. There has to be some degree of intentionality behind the weirder character traits and moments that are just executed too poorly to make them obvious stylistic choices (Frank's broken sentences for example, I feel like those are always supposed to be an homage to noir characters staring off into the distance saying vague insights/perspectives but Vaughn isn't directed with enough surreal gravitas so it just seems limp and like "wtf"). At the same time, Frank has probably my favorite scenes in the season and I wish he was developed more. Ray is for sure an accurate portrayal of a certain type of man, and I think one of the season's highlights is showing the pathetic realities of that kind of mentality/way of living and the tonal 180's in his behavior as he ricochets from highs and lows. Collin Farrell gave a fantastic performance in this role making a character who's almost a parody seem believable by way of his brief redeeming moments. Definite fokken mess story wise with too many intersecting character threads but there are some fun highs and hilarious bits, just feels undercooked.

@sovain6726 Thanks for appreciating Frank! He's the character that I latched onto, and I, like you, found the most interesting throughout the season despite the clunky neo-noir dialogue. Vince Vaughn did what he could with the direction offered, and I really enjoyed every time he was featured!

Yeah, the dialogue is definitely an attempt at a James Ellroy style speaking pattern, but it just doesn't work. I think what season 2 misses the most is the Cary Fukunaga direction.

I'm so glad you saw this through to the end. The noir style they were going for didn't quite hit the mark, and some say it was due to the studio rushing the writers for another hit. It gets better with rewatches, as your expectations don't get in the way of soaking up the characters. Season 3 had a much bigger gap to nail down the writing... It's still not perfect, of course, but way closer to Season 1 in style and atmosphere. I think Season 4 is due around January?

@@StoryMission And they got the opposite of a hit. Tangent, David Lynch decided he needed 18 ep. to do Twin Peaks the Return right. A bean-counter at Showtime said "NO WAY." DL said "Then I'm not doing it." The head of Showtime realized doing it without DL would be a huge historic failure and set up a meeting with DL , they worked it out, and DL got what he needed.

Hey hey! Thanks sooooooooooooooooo much for this. Wow! Totals awesome to hear your opinions about a show I love. Now then. It is possible to throw unusual dialogue at a girl and still be interesting to her. (the restraining order quote) I don't believe in pickup lines, but wacky conversation does sometimes actually work. Anyhow. I liked how things ended. Heroes die. That's always heartbreaking and awesome to watch. I'm not interested in Saturday morning cartoons or mcu movies cause they too frickin hunky dory for me. 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 Anyhow. The season construct vs season one? I'm not going to measure minute by minute. But I'm guessing Woody n McConaughey was probably in 95% of screen time in the whole season. They did ALL the heavy lifting. And this season was spread out over more characters, so it felt a little more busy. For sure it did. The trio was lethal!!!! Loved that they showed killers with badges. That shootout was INSANE!! Then the party, and robbery at the cabin?? Eesh!!! Just wave after wave. I loved it. So thank you both for this. You're awesome. 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
