Great video, wish I had seen this 3 years ago... I have replaced my Intex pool twice using the salt water system.. It also destroyed the metal ladder... Have been checking into a resin pool. The cost of the pool is quite expensive compared to to the metal ones. So know I have to decide whether to invest in the resin to use salt.. Which I love, or go back with chlorine.. Thanks for the information.. Learned alot...

Ok so I have an 18ft above ground Intex Easy Set pool that is made entirely of a thick vinyl with absolutely no metals or steels. Ive got it supercharged with a big 1hp pump & Sand filter to keep my pool crystal clear 24/7. I even run an auto pool vaac cleaner every other day to keep the inside surface spotless. i was told that in order to convert my pool into a salt water pool all I needed to do was add the required amount of pool salt into my pool and that was it. I am now seeing all this stuff about the different salt water generators. What will happen if I salt my pool without any of these generators ??
@abovegroundpros

You'll have a salty pool that's all. The salt is only in the pool so that'll go through a generator and be converted into chlorine. You'll have to add a chlorine generator if you want to use salt.

We have an Intex 16" x 32" Ultra Frame Rectangular Above Ground Pool. The only steel on this pool is the frame "outside" the pool which does not come in contact with the water. The only other steel is the top railing which slips "inside" the pool liner and the only part that is not covered by the pool liner are the corner sections, which may or may not get splashed with a little water. Are you saying that a Saltwater system will not work on this type of pool?

A lot of people use salt systems on those pool, but it will speed up the rust process. Its not even so much the water contact, but the salted vapor that comes off of the water that damages the steel components.

crystal contreras Water purifier salt, pool salt, and table salt are the exact same chemical. Sodium Chloride. There only difference is there cut. Table salt is cut very fine. Technically you can use it, but at the cost of a grey bath tub ring.

All pool chlorine alternatives require at least a small amount of oxidizer. So does Pristine Blue. The only TRUE chlorine-free system is Baquacil or Soft Swim. They use peroxide to clean the pool. They are quite a bit more expensive and temperamental. You can look into them if you like.

I disagree with his statement that you can not use a salt system on a steal pool. That is misleading info. Yes the cheap steal frames on an intex pool will rust with in four years. But good above ground pool with a steal wall will not rust out any faster than it would with conventional pool chemicals. A saltwater pool is nowhere near the salt content of the ocean. And you can always just replace the top rail without replacing the entire pool if you had to. On my steal pool I took my top rails and recoated them inside and out with rust preventive paint. I snowmobile in the winter and I know first hand what salt can do to steal. That being said you can and many folks do use salt systems on steal pools.

I can’t see where your going with this....yes a saltwater pool is less salt content than the ocean...but let’s say someone adds too much salt by accident then that splashes on the steel. And then they add too much again, it will rot the metal. I have a 40yr old snowmobile, it’s never seen salt...there isn’t an ounce of rust on it but I’m sure if I introduce salt to it...I’m sure it will rust out. Remember they are the PRO’s...and his advice is intended to make your pool last a long time.

I had a simple 10x10 30' Intex pool that I added a salt water pump and filter to. It worked great for 3 years and could of kept going. There was a bit of rust on the bars where the joints met, but that was about it. The cost of the pool and the fact that we didn't have to mess with chlorine chemicals was perfect for us. With the reseeding grass because of the CA drought and because our kids are growing fast we decided to put in a full deck and 8x14 52' pool. The new pool is not all resin, but we are hooking our salt water system anyway. We were lucky to find a pool with the size that fits our limited amount of space. And we know we are lucky if we can get 4 years without too much rusting and having to take the pool down. I understand that an all resin pool would be ideal, but that isn't always an option for people with limited space. I do hope you will still help and provide insight for people who are using the less than ideal pool with a salt water system. My biggest problem at the moment is my system. it says too much salt and then after adding salt it says too much. I'm thinking I need a new one. I would like to know what would be best for a 2,600 gallon pool. Thanks!
@abovegroundpros

+LA Pink The Intex Krystal Clear model would be plenty for your size pool. Most people with Intex pools use the salt system even though it has corrosive effects. The benefit out weighs the corrosion in my opinion. But if you had a $8000 pool, then you would want the pool to be designed for salt.

My pool was 2,000, if it were 8,000, I would definitely make sure it was all resin. I have a new question. We are now thinking hooking up solar heaters to help warm the pool. The pool sits in the shade and the best place to put the solar heaters would be our house's roof. Do you recommend a solar heater and what salt water pool pump would be strong enough to pump the water up to the roof?
@abovegroundpros
8 жыл бұрын
+LA Pink For your size pool, I would recommend the coil solar heaters. They will work with the equipment you have now. If you get one that goes on the roof, then you would have to buy a new pump AND a new filter because the pump would be too big for the filter you are probably using now.

Hi Al. Im from Brazil and just bought a Salt System this week, because of your tips. Thanks. I have 2 questions. 1- My pool is made of concrete/bar metal walls and is ceramic coating. The salt system can corrode the metals inside the concrete walls? 2 - Can I use marine salt? Here in Brazil, salt for pools are very exepensive (around 20 dollars), but salt for animals (bovines and horses) are iodine free and way more cheaper (just 3 bucks). They also can be found at thin or thick granulation. Can I use it? and the granulation matters? Thanks alot, master.

I'm not a hundred percent sure if the salt can corrode through the concrete or not. I would doubt it but I'm just not a hundred percent sure. As far as salt for the pool I would highly recommend pool salt even if it's more expensive. Chemically it's the same stuff but the refining process is different and other salt can be really dirty and end up destroying yourself prematurely. Pool salt is a very clean salt.
