These stunning round or square shape structures, known as Tulou, are found in Fujian Province, China.
Central China was in a state of war in the 10th century and many people migrated to southeast China. They built Tulou with clay and rocks for living and defense. Circles of rooms are enclosed by another circle. Rooms are connected by round corridors. The first floor is a kitchen. The second floor is used as a granary. The third and fourth floors are used as bedrooms. There are more than 300 rooms in the largest Tulou which can accommodate more than 800 people. The center of Tulou is a public area with wells, kitchens and livestock pens.
It’s like a small village within a single building!
Check out these small, high windows. They were perfect for keeping an eye out for enemies while keeping the inhabitants safe. The small size and high placement of the windows make it difficult for attackers to enter or shoot arrows through them. Plus, they let in just enough light and air to keep things comfortable inside.
Tulou buildings have a rich history, dating back to the 12th century. They were built by the Hakka people and other ethnic groups, showcasing incredible engineering and communal living. In 2008, several Tulou were even designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites!
So next time you watch Mulan, keep an eye out for these amazing Tulou-inspired scenes. And if you ever get the chance, definitely visit one of these incredible buildings in person. But everyone I am still looking for Mulan. Has Mulan really lived in one of these? Let me know in the comments and don’t miss my next video about it.
