You were just tuning a blunt saw to run lean, of course a blunt saw is going to run faster if you lean it out it will try to reach its maximum horsepower and cut faster because of the chain speed rather than running around 9000 rpp under load with a sharp chain where it's torque is. For example you can run a 16 inch bar with a sharp chain on a 70cc chainsaw at 12,500 revs but if you keep doing it for an hour you will burn your saw up.

Definitely seemed lean to me on the first in wood tune, no 4 stroke burble at all when you let up pressure. Most people i know set so you have a touch of burble until you load the saw up then soon as chain bites good it will clean up. Saw tuned as lean as it was at 15,000 could possibly cook if ran hard not just a few cuts. I usually start on the low speed turn it to stall at idle then back out till it starts to drop rpm from being rich. I count the turns between the two spots on the low jet and set halfway in between. Check acceleration if a bit doggy I’ll lean a bit till it crisps up. Then tune the high in wood to a light 4-stroke that cleans up with a little saw pressure. This may not be perfect for max power but it’s close and I don’t need to worry as much about a saw I repaired blowing up from lean condition.

I agree, I tune to a mild 4-stroke/burble outside the wood and confirm that it cleans up while in the wood and under load. At least that is what I try to do. Many times I have trouble differentiating between the "burble" and the rev limiter, ugh. When in doubt, I run my saw a tad fat to be on the safe side.

Been tuning saws almost exactly like you for years! Best power in cut then if screaming free rev, give it a tiny bit more solong as it stays pretty clean in the wood. Make a few cuts then verify the spark plug color. Never owned a small engine tachometer but asked for one for Christmas🙂

I always start with the tach and fine tune it in the wood, if needed. Especially with my stock saws that have a max RPM listed. I love my Echo saws but almost impossible to tune them by ear out of the wood.

Is that your 4910? What bar you got on there? I learned to tune my saw by having it four stroke out of the cut and run fine in the cut. You test this by cutting into a log and periodically lift up on the saw and see if it four strokes, then drop it back down into cutting and it clears up. Its a fine line indeed.

As soon as you modify a saw in any way, the tachometer specs go out the window... The Max RPM spec the manufacturer gives is for the stock saw is pretty much a set and forget deal. It's rich enough to run all day in most conditions without burning it up, and perform moderately well power wise and limits the no load max rpm. Tuning under load in the wood is the only way to get the most out of your saw, the cuts really showed that well. Tuning in the wood gives you the right balance between keeping the top end cool enough and performance. You get to feel out where you want to put that balance where a simple RPM can't. If you are running a quick race, you can go a bit leaner for max power because you won't be running long enough to burn it up. This is part of the reason why I love playing with saws... I don't have to drive them on the road to test them and swap out jets and have an issue and walk home pushing it 😉

yeah, just tune by tach is the safest thing to do, maybe not the best in a matter of performance, but it's just safest

‘’Sounds too rich to me”. Yes, my Echo’s sound the same way out of the wood. In the wood is the way to go for H. Throttle response for “L’. The stock 4910 port timing yes 13,500 is what you want. You have a ported saw now. Charlie altered the port timing. The new power peak is way different.

This is why I like autotune/m-tronic. It keeps the engine perfectly tuned at all times for maximum RPM in the cut. No matter how good of a carb tuner you are, nobody tunes their saw multiple times a day in a cut to get maximum power. Lets not forget that a 3degree C change in air temperature will increase or decrease the air density by 1%. So in the same day, from morning to mid-day, your saw will get out of tune.
@Super-Dave-Outdoors
Жыл бұрын
Even though I prefer equipment with a carburetor it just happens that Autotune and M-tronic also perform better for the average consumer. In my area maybe 1 in 5 customers that walk into the dealership know what a carburetor is and maybe 1 out of 20 in that group know how to adjust one properly. At least once a month I have a customer that is adamant that they "cleaned" the carburetor so i dont even need to try because they "cleaned" it so well. Sure enough the outside is spotless, but once you open it up and take it apart it will be filled with varnish. -Dave

M tronic / auto tune limit output and the factory can decide what rpm you run your saw at. No thanks. Adjusting carbs can be easy with a little knowledge 1% is not enough to even question any saw if your running it all day. Just my dumbass opinion.

I disagree to a point. I have both autotune and carb saws. I spend more time drinking around with “field resets” than I do with carbs. But when autotune is working, it works awesome. With that said, those of us that are used to carbs rarely have to do much to them at all. I set slightly rich and it’s usually good for 10 degree swings without doing anything. You really don’t need absolute peak RPM for working. What you need is a saw that starts, runs, and is dead nuts reliable. My 562 gives me more grief than any other one of my saws. My Echo 501P is a “grab and go” saw with occasional minor tweaks.
