If you re talking about a sphere- you need at least a cube big enough to make the diameter you want in the final product

I wonder why he chose to start with a skew instead of a gauge in my experience starting the rough cuts with a gauge tends to fill them faster plus it is harder to get through the bigger edges as they come around an knock the cutting edge of the skew

Turning pipes isn't like turning a bowl or a spindle. Think you'll find a lot of pipe carvers use a skew or round edge skew. It's more a shaping process than a wood turning, hogging material off.
