I’ve always wondered this; Have you ever considered boiling the gold right after the drop in its own AR until it clumps? What I’ve found is that as long as I don’t have excess nitric, I use the remaining hcl in solution to do the initial “cleaning”. This does 2 things: 1-allows the gold to completely clump up into a nice sponge thus preventing any loss when decanting. 2: obviously helps clean the gold up a bit before the first rinse with water followed by the fresh hcl boil. I’ve also had some pretty amazing drops and even caught some on video when I heat the gold to around 90*F right before the drop. The gold drops quickly and beautifully as compared to a cold drop. As long as you don’t have excess nitric, it’s simply the best route I’ve tried over the years. You can always use sulphamic acid to not only remove or verify any excess nitric is spent, but it also precipitates the lead once cooked before filtering :)
@sreetips
Жыл бұрын
Yes, I’ve boiled the precipitated gold in its own juices. The gold settles quickly and drives off any excess SO2 gas. However, if there’s any free nitric in there at all, it hits a critical point and reacts violently boiling it over. I have a video of this posted on my channel. Can’t remember the name of it. It certainly makes a big mess.

Correct, I added some AR that was used to dissolve some gold clinging to the inside of a plastic bucket. It was still active with plenty of excess nitric. When I added it to the big flask it dissolved everything in the flask. Then excess SMB that got poured off in the flask precipitated it back out if solution.

When you get to a gold bearing solution, can you add some type of chemical that will allow you to store the solution in a liquid form for a long time.
@themyceliumnetwork

yes & no. you can store the acidic gold bearing solution forever as long as it doesn't dry out, if it does its no longer a solution but still contains all the gold. you can also boil it down to a thicker state so you don't have to keep bucket loads of it, just rehydrate with 50/50 HCL & DW when you want to drop (precipitate) it hope that helps

@CothranMike
Жыл бұрын
Using only a gas mask will be the death of people and has been in the past from what hearsay there is about it. The draw rate in inches or feet per minute is important even if the data reads in ISO. 0.3 to .8 m/s is not in cubic, it is in area. Average air velocity at the opening should be in excess of 80 feet per minute, that is in linear feet folks not cubic. National Fire Protection Association sheet last updated is 25 CFM per interior square foot of work area. Working near the hood as S'tips infrequently does is only indicated as he has shown. These hoods come in types suitable for commercial cooking, this is not what you need to use. Search for chemical fume hood. Stand alone fume extractors should not be used either. This subject is a vast rabbit hole with many expert opinions some of which concur and some that do not. Suitablity for these chemical reactions is the driving factor. The term 'dilute acid' indicates one thing, 'concentrated acid' means another. Take care. MikeC

Interesting how Gold will not dissolve effectively in Nitric acid or Hydrochloric acid, but will dissolve in a mixture of these two acids. That's how you end up with AuCl4(aq) or Tetrachoroaurate ion. HAuCl4 is hydrogen tetrachloroaurate. The balanced reaction is 2Au +9HCl +3HNO3 --> 2AuCl3 + 3NOCl + 6H2O. From this equation you can obtain the stoichiometric ratios between Gold and the two acids used. 2 moles of Gold need to be dissolved in a solution of 3:1 HCl/HNO3 Excess acid conditions will ensure that all the gold is dissolved, but the ratio of the two acids remains at 3:1
@sreetips
Жыл бұрын
I used 250 ml hydrochloric acid and 15ml nitric acid to dissolve the 38.5g of gold in this video. Using three to one or even four to one HCl to nitric is not used in modern refining. Using that much nitric guarantees problems with excess nitric during precipitation. And it wastes the expensive nitric acid. I use a ratio that’s closer to ten to one, HCl to nitric, successfully, for years.
@CothranMike
Жыл бұрын
This is true for inorganic chemistry of course, S'tips uses a lower ratio closer to 9:1 or so. His casual HCl addition to the initial parting with nitric left will have some contribution to the ratio. This is not all that important since he is going to either boil it to a syrup or use excessive stump-out. All-in-all casual chemistry like this is just wonderful. MikeC
@PetraKann
Жыл бұрын
@@CothranMike ..... agree. There are multiple acidification steps. Even if you use excess acid conditions you will not achieved a 100% conversion in the reaction. Of course there are other impurities present which cannot be filtered or settled out. The gold nugget at the end which had a high purity is definitely a tick for the technique used.....

I judge when it’s done by the color of the acid. This time it was looking a pale green. This tells me that while I still pulled some copper (blue) I was also putting some gold in solution (yellow). Traces of blue plus traces of yellow make pale green. Green means the nitric boils are probably complete. I was right based on how clear the first AR gold dissolve turned out. I’d stay away from open flame as heat source. Some reactions evolve hydrogen gas. I suppose a small cheap vacuum pump would work. But it wouldn’t last very long. I have an hvac pump from harbor freight. I bought it a dozen years ago. It’s still in service. I keep the oil changed and it has been a work horse for me. Please see my video “how to build a reliable vacuum system” video posted on my channel.

@@sreetips I'll watch the video, buy the hf pump, and go electric. Bless your heart.

What if you have 97.6% gold that you want to refine to 0.999 is it the same process... What if you have 500 kg to do?
@sreetips
Жыл бұрын
97.6% can be refined to three nines using this process. You do 500 kg the same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time.

My goodness, you’re right. I had my gold app set to 80% - sorry about that. That’s what I use to pay folks for their scrap.

when you inquart gold, can you feel it's weight in the solution? I mean, does the solution feel heavier than water due to the gold content?
@sreetips
Жыл бұрын
Yes, but it’s hard to detect by feel. It’s much heavier than plain water because I’ve measure the same volume of each on a scale.

So what’s the profit margin for this kind of refining? Time,chemicals, power used, cost of scrap so on. This is definitely not my thing lol. I don’t mess with with electrical work gas work or in this case chemicals. It’s just not for me. I like watching it but won’t try it

The chemicals and electrical for this refining cost less than fifty bucks all in. My time doesn’t matter. I’m retired and this is my hobby. The equipment has all been paid for long ago.
