The big caveat is that just using it or glass rarely isn't a huge problem unless your in a high volume production environment, I'd still mask and suit up and probably have a suction system to pull the dust away. hi, i used glass tubing for my custom desk-pc case and i can tell it is very easy to work with and it looks so incredibly clear. I did even get some 90° angeled tubes from a glass manufacturing company for only 6€ per piece. For cutting i used the same tool as you did, but for deburring i used a dremel with a diamond cutting disk. With the diamond disk you are able to grind a few millimeters in length if you messured the tube wrong.

I used to recycle bottles into cups. You are using the right tools really for the score don't have to get expensive equipment to cut glass. I have seen other ways if you have a bench saw and cut off wheel for tile cutting you can do that just work on it outside wear safety glasses and have running water from the hose and go slow this will not only score the line but will cut and sand the edges clean for you. You can also use an old glass cutter hand tool, make a small hand gig and either with your hand or with a tool you can score the glass that way. I know when it comes to big glass to get a clean break sometimes fire is the way to go. Rubbing alcohol and a lighter over the scored line will cause a friction break people will also use string soaked in rubbing alcohol wrap it around the score line and light it on fire does the same job sometimes. Not always clean but you don't have to use the hand break method. I also suggest to instead use a big file to use a hobby file (harbor freight carries them for under $5 a set of 6) or just 240 grit sand paper does the job, just lay the grit paper down on a flat surface, take the cut end of the tube and in a circular motion move the tube around over the sand paper, 5 to 10 min and you can a clean flat end. I also suggest before setting them in the compression fitting to round the edges or file them to an angel if this make sense ( |_| -> \_/) this prevents the glass tubing from cutting into the o-ring and makes it easier to just shove it in place no resistance.

I do not know if anyone has commented and told you this about glass cutting, but first of all you should dip the edge of the cutter in fine oil, a small cut should be enough, you should lay the glass down the edge of the table before breaking ut, and make sure the cut is just over the edge of the table. If you follow these methods you will get a much cleaner cut. The edges on the inside and outside should be smoothened of with a sand paper (Feel free to use your drill for this). I have worked with glass for over 5 years and used to do this for a living. :)

When I worked for a glass blowing company we would "crack off" the top of closed pieces to finish them. We did this by making a small score where we wanted the cut and then slowly spinning the glass with flame directed at the score. The temperature differential would pop the top off cleanly and quickly - needing very little finish work. This is how we made wine glasses with very thin rims, but it also worked on larger pieces up to 1/4" thick - just takes longer. You could likely replicate this with the drill and a small propane torch.

One of the best glass cutting tools is the Jaws Glass Scoring Tool (Sm.) from ABR imagery $45 for the size of tubing you are cutting. One big warning on the tube if you are going to use a file ware a mask to prevent inhaling glass dust. Licking or wetting the cut also prevents glass dust as well. A regular propane torch will flame polish it just takes a little more time. Hope this helps. Love your videos thank you so much.

JayZ here's the dope on glass tubing. #1 Use Pyrex Glass it's like the hardest most durable glass #2 Get a good propane style torch with a good hot even flow tip and always use MAP gas comes in yellow collered canisters So what u do is after u cut ur glass, use the torch at the tip of the flame (is the hottest part of the flame) and spin the rough edge around over the flame Leave over the heat till u get the glass to glow red and the glass melts. This will smooth the jagged sharp edge down to a nice smooth rounded edge. alow to air cool before u touch it or u'll get burned.

Try heating the glass where you scratched it and dip it in cold water... It usually takes a bit more time but the cut is smoother, as the movement caused by the temperature difference is way more subtle than breaking it by hand... I used to do this with a friend to cut bottles, but we used a piece of metal string/wire (or however it's called) heated it up and tied it where we wanted the cut. After a bit, you cool it quickly in water and it cuts close to where the metal was. Not as precise, but a lot faster.

For cutting the glass tubes, the method you use is pretty much the time tested method. You go a little above and beyond on the scoring but whatever floats your boat. You can pick up some glass tile nippers for under $15, they will get you a nice clean score. just put the glass tube on a flat surface, preferably padded, pinch the tube between the two cutting disc, and roll it until you have a score all the way around. I also think the file is fine for what you are doing. If you wanted the ends to be a little cleaner then pick up some silicon carbide sandpaper, it's the stuff marked wet and dry. Will take a bit longer but ends up a bit nicer.

I'll also add that the tubing they are selling can be found online for $1-3 per 1500mm tube for the 12 and 13mm, the 16mm can cost as much as $5 per 1500mm tube. All depending on the wall thickness.

'Scratch and snap' works fine for 'standard' Flint Glass Tubing. However, Borosilicate Glass tubing (Pyrex, Kimex,) takes slightly different methods. Like a EZ Dremel Diamond Cutting wheel, A Dremel drill press stand, a right angle Adapter, A workbench Board with a Low form of a Rail Guide and End stop , (of course an eyedropper of water). Then a Diamond Honing Plate (Typically used for sharpening Lawn Mower blades) in a rectangle dish pan with a little water and a squirt of dish soap in it, to Square up the ends. And finally, Yes, a Propane torch to 'Fire Polish the cut ends smooth, (So that the 'O rings' cannot be damaged by sharp of jagged cut end edges).

It looks fantastic with the really clear "halo" of glass-sheen around the liquid. I also really like the idea of having tubing that is ultra-resistant to chemical changes and staining. I think my main worry (aside from it being much more work to cut) is how to get it all to fit together tightly in the end. What I mean is that glass will have close to zero flex, so if you need it to go between 2 fittings that aren't themselves movable then I'm not sure how you can fit it without the ends sticking in uncomfortably shallow... especially when you can't easily trim off a few millimeters extra. With PETG (and a lesser extent plexi), you can slightly bend the tube while inserting, but glass definitely won't let you do that. @JaysTwoCents It would be nice to know if this was a problem for you - and if you still would recommend glass for someone who is willing to spend a lot of time and effort on the cutting...

As far as I know in former times they used a piece of string that was covered with sulfur poweder. You wrap that string around the glass and burn it, so it melts through the glass and you can break that part. It makes very clean "cuts". I have looked for videos showing it but can't find it. Just some guys making very crappy cuts with burning string and then placing the heated bottle into icy water.
@vdubvance
8 жыл бұрын
Propane torch should be hot enough to round down the sharp ends after the break and are pretty cheap at hardware stores. If you're going to be doing it often, might just look into a used gas blowers oxy/propane torch. Talk to a local head shop or some of the glass artist's pages on facebook and experiment with it. I'm sure you could get some beautiful bends with that glass. I'll go find you on facebook and link you to some of the underground glass arts groups. I'm sure you'll find some things of interest.

Mayhems do offer pre-bent 90 degree bent glass. So it *is* possible, maybe just expensive if you dont spec out all your bends first, and you only get the single bend. However, with your tip of working it all out before hand with tubing/hardline, you should have a better idea. And the pre-bent is 500mm in length, so you do have the possibility of obtaining some straight runs out of it as well.

One tip I would have and I use this when I am doing stained glass windows is to always start by cutting your largest pieces first that way if you make a mistake or have a bad break you may be able to use that piece to make a smaller tube later on. If you do your largest tubes last and you make a mistake the rest of that tube is useless for your current build.

I know this video is old now..... the wheels are not meant to score over a previous score. By continued spinning it damages the wheels so it has a greater chance of damaging cuts later on. For bending the tubes, you can try simply by hand, rotating the point you want to bend on a flame (some use the stove), and bending by hand from the extremities with care. And if you want to have something inside to prevent caving, what about sand, some plumbers used it on pvc pipes. Just throwing ideas around.
@adamayers1469
8 жыл бұрын
+Tortex i thought the same but then with a little more thought there is problems with sand in glass as you need to pack the whole tube with sand you run the risk of scratching the inside of the glass as well as the chance of the sand becoming impregnated into the glass at the hot spot, also the sand needs to be extreamly well dryed as any moister in the sand can expand under the heat and pop there is the glass tube exloded in your hand. but all in all it was my first thought as well i think a spring would be a safer alternitive.
@tortex1
8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure a spring would work, the heat would make it soft fast. And if the glass gets so soft that sand embeds itself in it, the spring could leave marks as well. But there are videos where people bends glass tubes with pliers, by (gloved) hand or by gravity, and they never have anything in the tube.

This glass build almost seems the easiest to do out of the other ones! Will you show bending glass?

There's a place near me that makes glass pipes for headshops, I've always wanted to see if they'd make me cool patterned glass tubing for a loop... one day

Great Video Jay! Thanks for the tutorial... I heard people are getting hyped around this because of how clean it makes the build.

Hey Jay, maybe a video idea? I've been watching a video about a relatively cheap thermal camera you can just plug into your phone (Android as well as iOS). One of the things shown is how computer components heat up and temperature differences are made visible. I've been wondering if the temperature differences in a watercooling loop would become visible, and possibly showing for a fact if the heat from a lower card in a multi GPU setup is actually transferred to a card above it. But since I don't have a watercooling loop, nor money and time available to try it myself, I had hoped you could maybe show (in visuals, not benchmark numbers) in your loop if cards warming each other up, is in fact not true. I do think this is the case, but for all those who don't, I think such a video might convince everyone. I have not been able to find a video showing this, maybe because it's not possible? I don't know. Anyway love the content and hope this might have helped in the making of a new vid :D thanks for reading if you did. :)

instead of using silicone insert to bend the glass could you try to fill the glass tube, making a loop. So using like air or liquid run it through the glass tube while heating the point you want and bending it. If you keep the pressure high enough (but not too high) then you would be able to bend it right? I am speculating, i am not sure if the heated point in the glass would be structurally sound enough to withstand the pressure, (though i also dont think you need to deal with a lot of pressure)

Would you try a combo of glass and other tubing on any builds, or would you only stick with one. Glass for the straight tubing and the other for bends or would you rather just stick with the joints?
