Do you have a solution for old school poly cement from the 60's and 70's? Great video by the way.

Thank you for watching! The old stuff is pretty chunky but should still soften with liquid cement. It will take time for the solvent to work and may damage the surface. Perhaps apply the liquid cement as I demonstrate and use a knife to lever the parts off. It won't be pretty but should aid in separating at the original join.

Which solvent us used in this glue which only desolves glue but does not harm the case plastic just like acetone ! , Can we use acetone too?
@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne

This is polystyrene cement that soften the joint. It does harm the polystyrene plastic. I wouldn't use acetone.

Hi I have a slight emergency. I glued the tail elevators in the wrong position on my 1/48 kit with super glued and then with Tamiya thin. Is there any hope to gently pull the elevators off with a debonder? Thank you for this excellent presentation.

You can only try. Nothing to lose. Other alternative is to cut them off and reattach with reinforcing pins joining the 2 sides for strength.

does this work with other kind of glue. like the one in tube
@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne

No, you need to use a liquid cement to penetrate the joint.

I glued 2 PLA parts together on a shared flat surface with quite a lot of surface area, sanded down on either side before hand with 800 sandpaper. I used loctite super liquid. Problem is, each part is cylindrical in shape with a ~1 inch diameter, completely flat all the way through. When I placed the parts together there was a slight misalignment but the glue cured too fast to adjust. I have soaked the joined area in acetone but it doesn't seem to be helping Is there too much surface area and glue between the parts to separate them? They are basically water tight and I don't think anything is actually penetrating

You are correct that there is too much surface area for the acetone to contact with. You will need to physically break the joint to get it apart. Super glue is very brittle so a sharp hit on the PLA should crack the joint. The PLA may get damaged in the process.

@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne I had to destroy on of the smaller parts to get it off. Separating them by force didn't work. Sheered off a chunk of my finger with an exacto blade between the parts because I got impatient and applied too much force lol Based on what the remaining glue looked like when I finally got them apart it looked like the acetone did something. On the inside I was able to apply more leverage to get the remaining plastic from the destroyed part off with ease, like a suspicious lack of difficulty given my previous attempts. I was thinking of buying pure acetone to use, and buying some small insulin syringes or something. If I could get one in between the two surfaces without breaking the needle or stabbing myself I could maybe inject some of the acetone directly between the surfaces. Not sure if that would have worked or not, but I probably should have tried it before attacking it with an exacto blade. I am still confused on what even happened. Usually with PLA and the particular type of glue I am using I have a second or two to readjust before the bond is permanent, but this time it seemed instant

Yes, apply the cement where you want to separate the parts and gently apply pressure to undo the joint.

I’ve CA glued the shroud bracer channels on the side of my wooden ship in the wrong place. How do I relocate them without tearing my hull apart or the channel?
@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne

You could try to debond the CA with CA remover or acetone. CA penetrates wood so it depends how much the timber has absorbed the glue. It may take some time to release.
