Tyehimba Jess called his first book, "leadbelly," (2005) a biography in poems. His poem "Father" is discussed and read in this Poetry Moment. Blues legend Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter is revived in Jess's book, with poems describing Ledbetter's days as a young 12-string guitar player through his days in prison. When choosing it for the National Poetry Series, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, a judge, said, "It is exhilarating to be invited into a world so large and muscular, so rooted in history, a world where so much is at stake."
Chania Hudson reads an introduction to offer context and background on the poet and the poem.
