This is a really excellent video. We dived the Kowloon Bridge recently, one of the biggest wreck dives in the world, only a few miles from this site. Hope to do the U-Boat soon. Thanks for posting this excellent video. Its a great breifing video before we dive it!

We have a sunken German U Boat that is10 miles off our shore. It is located straight out from an amusement pier. It has deck gun ammunition strewn around it . The hatches were welded closed for safety, as it is not a novice dive. I was told that a large amount of Mercury was found on board. My Uncle was on a brand new Tanker that was sunk by this group of subs -- He survived.

The boat hit a mine at 80meteres depth. It was a british minefield (CF-2) which was illegally placed in irish territorial waters. Heavily dammaged it re-emerged aprox. 13 seamiles from Cap Clear. It transmitted an emergency massage and by the order of the commander the crew sunk thier own boat. In rubberboats they reached the irish shore at Galley Head and got detained by the british. Fortunatly no seaman died here.

@pudransemarikas Only the inside trunk of the tower remains. the outside rarely survives. Often times it is pulled of by fishing nets! Or it rusts away as the outer sheeting was of a much thinner sheet metal. I did see at least one u-boat in deep water where the outer casing of the tower remained and was calcified. It was really cool to see!!

She is suspected of hitting a mine on 12 March '45 as bow is extensively damaged, but now is felt to have hit uncharted pinnacle discovered 120 metres south of wreck known '78 Rock' (discovered in 1978 eeven though U260 found it in 1945?!). No losses to crew who rowed 4 miles ashore and interred for remainder of war - no allied activity in area on that date. I dived it many times since year 2000 doing external tour 15-20 mins each time, total dive time 45-50 mins with deco stops - quite safe

I have dived that boat, its amazing to see.The periscope is in eccellant condition the lense looks new. It did not hit a mine it was corral that cause her to sink. The u boat should not have been there as that part of Ireland was considered nuetral, it is believed they were looking to sneak up on England via Ireland. Incidently the man who discovered her also drowned at the site.

Yes fair point I forgot about the bubbles, looking again they are using twin cylinders. One thing I must add, she does lie at 50 metres.

According to the historical records that I have seen, U260 was damaged by a mine in early 1945. It was obvious that the boat would sink soon, so all the men aboard abandoned ship successfully and made for the Irish coast nearby. Thus it is NOT a war grave and there are no ethical objections to entering the sub. However, such a dive would be most hazardous and should not be attempted by anyone but the most experienced, best equipped divers. VERY HAZARDOUS!!

She lies at 50 metres.I could not stay long as i was using air, the divers in the footage are using rebreathers. The Boat is in good condintion except for the port side which has a whole in it exposing the torpedoes. There is a gun on the stern and the propellers are intact. The entrance hatch is open enabling you to look inside. All 48 crew survived. Another great dive is the Thistlegorm(Google it) in Egypt.

@sweenaldo1993 These dives are at pretty extreme depth. You have only pretty few minutes before reaching your turning point. At open circuit specially this becomes issue since your RMV is like 20 liters per minute roughly.

@sweenaldo1993 These dives are at pretty extreme depth. You have only pretty few minutes before reaching your turning point. Just imagine having a ceiling and a decompression window at the same time.

Amazing! It must have been a fantastic experience! And in spite of having been scuttled by own crew the boat seems remarkably well preserved. U-260 is a Type VII boat. Is it true it lies 80 meters deep? tell us more about your first hand experiences...

Does anyone know the logistics of a sunken Submarine surviving completely intact ? I know a war grave could not be disturbed or entered, but if one could? and has stayed watertight, as 18thc lead coffins have been discovered in London, and contents preserved as an egyptian tomb could stay uneffected by air. Could it be then at some time when technology exsists...be scanned by magnetometry radar or geophysics to see inside? Just fascinates me - the idea of looking into a time capsule

i read that this submarine was attacked and sustained hull damage by a Sunderland Aircraft from Derry ..Dived and escaped but taking in water SO at the end of 1944 it would have been suicide to go through the English Channel on the surface. The crew scuttled her and rowed ashore .They surrendered to Irish Army and after a big dinner in Hotel they were interned to the end of ww2. .Possible torpedo still in tubes according to U Boat museum in Hamburg.

They would however have to give Nazi salutes to officers during the Nazi era. Fortunately for them I doubt that SS men were present on the subs. The Soviets did have communist party officials on their ships up to 1989 so would the Nazis do the same? Millitay personel have enough worries without some guy walking around constantly singing praises of Fianna Fáil, Labour, Republican democrats, etc.
