Your remarks remind me a bit of the U-505 in Chicago. They recognized the elements and brought it indoors in its own wing. Very well displayed. While it costs more than I would like for a museum, it was very interesting and historic. Amazing, while there to hear viewers of the U-boat not understand a thing about what happened and how we almost knocked out of the war when we just started to fight. U-boats along the US coast brought us to our knees until we wised up to how the UK handled it.

I had the opportunity to visit U-995 in Laboe, and I have to be honest: I think she deserves better. Two gaping holes in her hull, exposure to salt air for decades, and the interior is rife with anachronisms installed when she sailed under the 1950's Norwegian flag. Not to glorify the Third Reich, but to preserve her unique role in naval warfare, it would have been better to display her indoors and restore her original fittings and interior.

I've been inside that Type-XXI (U2505?) at Bremerhaven Ships Museum in early 1994, filming something else, and took time out to have a wander around inside. So far as I recall it was scuttled in 1945, raised in the 1950s and fitted out as a marine research vessel before being handed over to the Museum. The periscope was permanently fixed pointing at a nearby department store for reasons I couldn't figure out. It achieved, in its time, the fastest underwater speed of any other sub of its class. Large & spacious inside and not the cramped conditions I was expecting. The casing and conning tower were streamlined, the design of which was copied by the Soviet Navy for their Whiskey Class vessels. Two moments of personal terror: 1) I decided on a whim to go through a bulkhead by taking hold of the handle above the door with both hands, swinging my legs through and standing up on the other side in one move. I couldn't understand why everyone was staring. I'd managed not to brain myself on a winding handle above my head by a gnats whisker. 2) as educational as the tour was, one couldn't get away from what the sub had been originally built for. Standing beside the torpedo tubes all the hairs went up on the back of my neck.
@alstokesveteranfilmmaker913

Nope. The sub is a 'thing' without personality but some locations in the world do carry a vibe of what they once were. I was born post war so have no grudge against the German people who probably did what my father did - got called up and went to do their duty, my country right or wrong and all that patriotic stuff. So it goes. I wouldn't presume to 'bet' on your feelings since we have never met but I don't feel at all warm about Mutually Assured Destruction no matter what the delivery system. Well, I might feel very warm for about a tenth of a second before vapourising. Unfortunately, due to some long ago treaty which no one remembers signing, we in the UK can't launch anything of a nuclear nature at anyone without a US President's permission. Even though our defence system was developed and is solely owned by the UK Government. Stands back, waits for anti-British tirade, sits here and takes it because it says more about the shouting person that it does about us.

I'm not a lot of folks. I can only give my personal impressions of what it momentarily felt like being in that particular place at that time. In the 1970s I worked in Germany, I still have good friends in Berlin and I do not have a problem with the German people for past deems done before they or I were born. If it helps to understand, many years ago I was a press photographer taking pictures on a disused US 8th Air Force B-17 Bomber base in the east of England and I had the exact same momentary twinge - the fact of being in a place where very young men lived in close company, fighting and dying high above the occupied lands of Europe, never knowing if today was to be their last on Earth. That creates a lot of energy and sometimes, I think, it hangs around for a long time and people can pick up on that. Or I might have imagined it because I knew where I was. It has nothing to do with nationalism or who was right or wrong in a conflict situation. It is an entirely human moment caught in time. But I will keep my opinions to myself and never comment on KZitem again, except on my own channel where I've posted films I produced during the last 50-years as a film maker and professional photographer. I am sorry to have trespassed upon your time. Goodbye.

A trip to the Bremerhaven Ships Museum where the Type-XXI boat bobs about is a tourist destination I would recommend for anyone interested in German maritime history. Das boot is not floating at it's normal low water line level as the museum have cut two large entry and exit points at either end of the boat, probably for ease of access for persons of age and girth who would have trouble climbing down the hatch. The interior is in remarkably good condition considering it was scuttled off Heligoland in 1945 and sat on the bottom of the North sea until it was raised for use as a survey boat in the 1950s. Of the 131 boats of this type built, 120 were sunk or scuttled, eleven surrendered and five more were built by the Russians post war until their own sub designs were ready. The real leap in design by the builders Blohm & Voss was the massive increase in battery power and streamlined outer casing giving it a speed of 16 knots submerged. There is a huge amount to see at the Ships Museum including a re-created first class cabin from a German-Amerika liner which is outstanding. Unfortunately I was working and didn't have time to hang around. I took a lot of photographs and if I get time I'll eventually make a short movie and post it up on my YT channel. Avoiding using anything like the music that's on here. Maybe just the sound of the sea ... Bizarrely, in the mid-1970s, I lived just around the corner above a bar where I was in band and never gave the museum a second glance.

Germans have a very underestimated history. Although they as a nation in war can be brutal...they have a very unique inventory nature. And many of the weapons invented during ww2 are the forerunners of what we have today. One particular Uboat the IXD2 was one of the feared and deadly. Many thousands of lives lost on both sides...lets hope we never have to witness a war like it again...peace.

you know that those 30 000 german men that died in submarines didn't want the other side to use their "killing machines" on them. Atleast these submarines aren't like the brittish/american bombers that killed far more civilians than the german submarines killed sailors.
