Video doorbells seem like that one product that is obvious to make smart yet they're all pretty rubbish and follow the same design. A much better solution would be a dedicated cam with a smart switch that triggers a speaker sound and starts recording the footage. Could even setup a proper mic and speaker for the 2 way audio.

Thanks for another great video. You are very thorough which makes your videos standout. I have a 9ft entry way and I was wondering what your thoughts are about just installing a Reolink RLC-811 instead of any of these video doorbells. It would solve the motion detection issue and it's cheaper than some of these. And for audio, it has 2-way audio so couldn't you just tell the person what to do? Do people really have a conversation with someone at the door? I think I'd rather just tell them what to do. What are your thoughts (pros, cons) on this setup?

Does your review and opinion hold up several months later with eufy? There are some posts online suggesting that if the eufy doorbell is stolen and reset it'll delete videos on home base. You should also mention there's a giant security flaw with Eufy doorbells and their homebase setups. Videos stored on the HB are encrypted with a hash that's tied to the doorbell so if someone steals the doorbell and unsynchs it (basically press and hold the synch button for 10 secs), your videos are now useless. I’ve owned 2x Eufy 2k cameras (we moved and left the first one at old house), and generally like them, but one big issue needs to be pointed out: they have recently started putting obtrusive ads for their other products in the UI. I wouldn’t care so much if they were just banners in the corner, but they sometimes pop up on the entire screen when you are trying to access the camera feed! So you have to go through and click to close it, which takes like 5 seconds because of fat-fingers and small hit-box for the close button and also the slow UI. That may not sound like much, but when combined with the already existing delay time to bring up the camera feed once you finally get past the ad and can click on it, you can get an obnoxious delay to the point that the event you wanted to see is already over. It’s an unnecessary and very annoying thing, which was introduced in the last year (never saw it before that).

My dad has dementia and constantly mentions people visiting. All I have to do is look to see any events that have occurred, and most of the time, there are none. When packages are dropped off (mostly for me), I can then let my dad know to pick them up. He doesn't always realize they have been dropped off despite getting event alerts on his iphone.

Overall this is the best battery doorbell comparison test. The only thing letting the Nest doorbell down is the low resolution & the restricted 3 hour event recording that is included without subscription. Hopefully Google will improve this on their next release & give at least 12 hours of event recording free. (Edit) Its lithium battery performance is poor at temperatures near zero degrees & lower. Not only does it loose charge quicker it affects performance where artifacts can be seen in the video footage.

I very much appreciate your videos and all the thorough testing you do. If I had just one request, it would be that you also include a review of each company's privacy policy (what they premise, how easy it is to find and understand, and any public track record of good/bad privacy related events). I know that is a lot more work but I think privacy is a key point to consider when choosing cloud connected devices, especially cameras. From what I've seen and read, I think you'd find the Google Nest (and possibly some others) edge out the Ring overall. While Google definitely isn't perfect, Amazon just seems to do so many more questionable things with your data and camera feeds. Still, the rest of your review and testing process is spot on and I really appreciate all the effort you put into "getting it right". Thank you for all the amazing content!
@TheHookUp

In theory I like that idea. However, I'm a bit cynical of privacy policies. US based companies like Google (Nest) and Amazon (Ring and Blink) have enforceable legally binding privacy policies, but Chinese based companies like Eufy and 360 can pretty much say whatever they want in a privacy policy and there's no recourse if they were to violate it.

If you recommend anything that requires a monthly subscription, or must be connected to Google or Amazon, then those are automatic disqualifiers. The privacy of Google and Amazon have always been suspect. Eufy can be excluded from any external clouds which makes it most private of the three. $3-10 per month won't break the bank for the Ring, but why? Blink wireless might be an option but it might take 6-12 months to work out the bugs of a new product. I have been resisting Eufy for over a year, hoping for some Home integration, but that is not near as critical as the isolated system feature. I'm looking for a combined doorbell and camera setup with local storage so no need for ongoing costs. I've been having trouble finding any bundles of such a package and any reviews to see what options are out there too. It's for somebody who lives in a town house with their front door right on the footpath so they will have a lot of passing pedestrians, so having motion detection notifications would be pointless. They want to be notified if a delivery driver or other caller is at their door, so a doorbell or other trigger button to send a notification would be needed. They also want a camera for the rear of their property, then to be able to connect them both to the same hub and use the same app to see any notifications. Would anyone know of anything like this? I see TP-Link have a good looking camera set that has advantages over Eufy, but I'm not sure if there's a doorbell option that can be connected to the same system? Yes to both but with limitations to features. A subscription free Nest Battery doorbell includes a rolling 3 hour event history which auto deletes once the time expires. But they do give you a 30 day free trial of Nest Aware on set up which retains event history for that period & includes face recognition. Setting detection zones is also a free feature. You can wire it to power & connect it to an indoor chime, doing so increases the motion detection as seen in this review kzitem.info/news/bejne/oqWYp5qean2cnX4

Hi Rob, I have the Ring Doorbell 2 which I bought in Feb 2020 and my biggest gripe with it is the two-way talk and how laggy it is. For instance, I would speak through my phone and hear my voice being echo'ed back to me, not to mention the amount of time between when the person at the door hears my voice and visa-versa is too long for my liking. Believe me, I've tried everything to attempt to address this, my network is rock solid, etc. With this being said, do you think that perhaps the reason why you had such good performance on the Ring doorbell 4 is that the cloud service is hosted in the USA thus low latency and thus the data doesn't have to travel that far between your phone and the doorbell itself via the cloud? In my case the data has to travel from South Africa to where the Ring cloud is hosted presumably in the USA. I doubt that doorbells belonging to Ring users in SA are routed to a locally hosted cloud here at all. I could be wrong, but I cannot imagine that the 2-way talk feature between the Ring 2 and Ring 4 is that much different, if any at all. It would be interesting to know where the cloud services for these various doorbells are hosted and what the latency is between your house / phone and the cloud service and how that affects performance esp for 2-day talk and being able to view the camera via the Amazon Echo or Google Nest Hub.

Been my experience with the Ring and the Nest doorbells that the Ring has an alarmingly higher rate of false motion detections even with analytics turned on. One feature about the Nest and Ring battery powered doorbells is that they both can be wired to an existing doorbell. However, with them wired you still have to charge the battery on the Ring whereas the Nest does not. Also Nest now has an annual subscription that lowers the price of the subscription but admittedly is still higher than Ring.

I bought the Google one a few weeks ago and I HATE it. They advertise it as keeping 3 hours of footage free. Literally ever person reads that and thinks that's a few weeks of recordings if each is a minute long. Nope. This stupid thing detects a stranger and 2AM and by the time I wake up at 7AM the video has already been deleted. I thought the subscription was mainly for the face recognition settings and for a few extra weeks of memory, but no you need it just to have the memory not delete itself before you can see it.

@@TheHookUp not sure about the delay aspect, but mine seems overly sensitive to motion detection regardless of the sensitivity setting. It doesn’t seem to take into account the zones set, so it gets triggered constantly by any movement. I pretty much just use it as a pet cam, or to put near expensive outside holiday decorations. Regret that purchase decision.

How about reliability? My Ring 1( 2020) is very unreliable. When it works ,it is great-- all i need. But I never know if its working or not until I come home, walk in front of it and there is no alert. Then you have to go thru a series of reboots etc. to get another day of use. Terrible. I cant get more than 2 days of flawless alerts before rebooting etc. . I need to get a device that works. I'm still unsure after watching this.

I came here to find a replacement for the almost unusable Ring. What your tests don't show is that in the real world, over as period of time, there will be many incidents where the Ring servers are unavailable or slow to respond, and quite often you can answer the door, sign for a delivery, close the door and then 30 seconds later get a notification that someone is at your door. Ring customer service have a default answer to this "It's your wifi" which is it not, as I have a Linksys WRT3200 literally on a shelf behind the door. My ring camera could not possibly be getting a better signal. Again for the same reason, there is no way that a Ring is 10/10 for 2 way voice in the real world, infact it's so unreliable that I never use it anymore and instead just try yo sprint to the door before the caller walks away

Having used the Lorex 2K doorbell it seems to compare favorably to these battery ones though it is hard wired. If you have a wired round up I'd like to see how it compares to the others. I went with Lorex because there's no monthly subscription fees and I can store my data locally rather than on someone else's servers. I was literally half way across the country and had no issues talking to a delivery person who had a package that required a signature (even though deliveries should've been on a hold, but that's not relevant here).
@TheHookUp

I probably won't include the Lorex in my wired testing because it is the same hardware as the more popular Amcrest AD410, but the 410 has more community support for things like ONVIF, blue iris, and home assistant.

@@TheHookUp And this is why I tune in to you so I can find out things like this. If I had known that a year ago I would've just gotten the Amcrest! Hello, being a disabled senior I'm a bit out of the techno loop. My wife and I have our original doorbell wiring so my choices are available to either wired or wireless. The problem is the information I have gotten so far is mixed. I was thinking about eufy because I'm told there were no monthly fees and add on security is available. In calling eufy they oddly suggested the wireless version dual camera and just use the wires to recharge the eufy. Generically we cant even get solid recommendations in terms of wired vs wireless not to mention brands. While price is not too much of an issue, our front door (aside from regular amazon deliveries) get very little traffic. It seems in our area concern is growing more in terms porch pirates, catalytic converter thieves and even home invasion. Our only security system currently is short barrel 12 gauge 😬 Do you offer a paid service where I might be able to contact you? An unbiased explanation would be greatly appreciated. Texting / email is in and of itself confusing. Thx

Don’t care if I take heat for this but battery powered smart doorbells are absolutely stupid when there are several smart doorbells out there that power off existing doorbell wiring, or are PoE. And if you don’t have existing wiring, just add it. Still better to add it than using a battery doorbell in my opinion
@TheHookUp

Adding wiring is not an option for a significant number of people. Renters are obviously not able to undertake that project, and even though I own my home, it's made of concrete block and stucco, so I would need to rip out a significant amount of drywall from indoors and drill through both sides of my concrete block (which is generally a bad idea).

@@TheHookUp i'll back peddle a bit and acknowledge that there are circumstances where battery powered is the ONLY solution, but when there are alternatives, no matter how hard they may be to implement, my opinion is that battery powered should be the least preferred. just like i absolutely hate subscription based and cloud storage solutions. we've managed to take centuries old, free to use technology (the doorbell) and turn it into something that costs TONS of money to even own. there are several solutions out there that offer zero ownership costs after purchase, and provide local "free" storage. Ubiquiti for instance. the cost of a UI doorbell and the cheapest UI local storage, total not much more that a high-end Ring that itself will end up costing you hundreds/thousands more in ownership cost just to use it. love the channel, keep up the great work!!!!
@TheHookUp

You had me until Ubiquiti. A G4 pro is $199, the cheapest way to get unifi protect is a CloudKey Gen2+ ($199) and you'll need a $40 hard drive for a total of $440 assuming you could actually buy those products. That means you could pay the ring subscription for over 6 years before your break even point. During that time you will likely need to replace your unifi protect HDD at least once, maybe more. Also, as much as people tout Ubiquiti as a local control option there's still no way to log into your own protect instance via the phone app without a ui.com cloud account.
