Good on ya Pete for including this in your sharpening series. It doesn't appeal to me but I have a good many years sharpening by hand on benchstones. I can see it's attraction for those trying to get a handle on sharp knives. Younger folks got lucky with all these sharpening videos. It was like looking for clues back when I wanted to learn.

You're not wrong. Ever see how stones are cut? Stone cutting utilizes blades that use a slurry of industrial diamonds and powdered stone. The blade itself doesn't do the cutting, but the slurry does. This technique dates back to ancient Egypt and likely earlier than that.

Nice. This is the best "roller" review that I have seen. Balanced and fairly comprehensive. (I would have liked to see a demo with a small paring knife and/or folder.) I have the WSPro and the WSRoll sitting in unopened boxes in my kitchen right now. Trying to decide where to start. That scratch pattern and monster burr from the roller has me worried! But the convenience and wife-accetance-factor are large with the roller. 🔥

For me as a knife enthusiast I use old fashioned oil or water stones. I been doing it for years and find it easy. For beginners I usually recommend the worksharp field sharpener. It seems too suit beginners too practice on and can get a good working edge. I have a lansky sharpening kit which is ok but frankly the blade clamp isn't great as the blade can tilt side to side altering the edge angle. I tried the tumbler and on larger knives like kitchen knives ect it does provide a good working edge but it won't do on a small pocket knife. If you can only afford one then get the field sharpener. Its pretty well suited for all blades. That's my 2 cents. Have a good day all.

I wonder if it would be better for pocket knives if they add different options for higher height "shelves" to prop the knife up. Something like what's on the 20° and 25° sides, but redesigned so you can make different combinations of height and angle.

21:00 Video editor Pete realizes that one of his complaints was easily solved by raising one of the components, which was a satisfying (and humorous) bit. I'm left wondering if that same Pete came to learn that many of his other clearance problems could be solved in like fashion? I think all those kitchen knives could've been sharpened right to the heel by elevating the roller's platform, and various other knives could be accommodated by elevating the magnetic platform and/or shimming the knife up a bit. Not trying to be too critical--just want to see the sharpener reaching its full potential.

It's kind of strange to release a sharpener aimed at laymen, and then charge 10x what they're used to paying. I understand why it costs what it does, especially coming with 4 diamond stones, but it certainly seems like it may miss the intended mark at that price point. Regardless, I'm glad to see a reliable brand like Worksharp take up the challenge of making these things actually worthwhile. I certainly wouldn't ever give 200+ dollars for a sharpener I can't even change stones on.

G'day Pete, I do remember these roller jobs hitting the market and I thought then, totally unnecessary and indeed an inferior concept; (change for changes sake I'd say), and I definitely haven't seen anything to change that opinion, to be honest I'm very surprised Worksharp have actually put their name on one. In fairness, I can certainly understand, as a content creator, why you'd give it a crack, and for better or worse, well done in doing so. Cheers Duke. P.S. You internet knife "experts" all keep making fun of a chef's sharpening steel. STOP IT ! Ask yourself why nearly every kitchen knife set comes with a steel ? Are these people fools? NO! Its because STEELS DO SHARPEN ! And to further confound you, realize that many butchers use a steel that is completely smooth with no ridges, abrasives or diamonds. How can that be? Just look up "burnishing". Plastic deformation of a metal by rubbing it against another piece of metal. Produces few if any debris or chips, and thus no to negligible wear on the blade. A sharpening steel restores an apex and may even produce some work hardening of that edge. Please do all the chefs in the world a favor and dice up some rope after sharpening on abrasives vs. after sharpening with a steel. The results could be interesting. Anyway, look at it as an opportunity to once again show that amusing viral vid of that showoff chef.

@@jlpowell51agree. The more reviews I see of these rollers the more I realize it’s only selling because it’s “new”. It’s expensive, gives a decent edge, takes practice and doesn’t work on all types of knives. Buy two diamond stones instead, and you’ll get the same result (the first time) with the added benefit that you can use them on every type of blade and most importantly, for each knife you sharpen your edges will be better and better as you learn.
