Watched Hee Haw when I was a kid, this was one of the best segments because you never knew who it was with their back turned.
@michaelpalmieri7335

The segments shown here were actually parodies of the "Pfft, You Were Gone" routine. In the regular skits, it was usually one of the cast members (I forgot his name) who would stand next to Archie Campbell while looking the other way, or sleep while leaning on Archie's shoulder, as the latter would sing a verse from the song. After doing so, he would signal his friend, either by poking him with his elbow or with whatever farming tool he had in his hands, and the two of them would sing the chorus: "Where, oh where are you tonight," etc, etc.

Archie Campbell first performed it live on the Porter Waggoner show in 1969 with two of Waggoner's regular singers. That version was phenomenal. Campbell really took this little ditty to the next level on Hee Haw with the costumes, original lyrics, harmonies, etc. On Hee Haw, it was first performed with Gordie Tapp on a weekly basis. It then morphed into where the guest stars of each episode would be Campbell's foil. Even with all the hilarity, the singing and presence was phenomenal. This compilation was well made.

We watched HeeHaw as a family, all huddled around the tv. My Mom would bust up so hard with this song. It was her favorite, along with "slopped her dripper". She was from San Francisco and Hollywood, but she married a Kansas dirt farm boy, so she'd indulge in country stuff, never mocking it. The last of CBS's Country Broadcasting days, the final hold out was Hee Haw, and it was not going down without a fight and a knee slap.
