It was a town and county seat until the beginning of the 19th century.

An ancient story, dating back to the Christian reconquest.
At the origin of the construction of this sanctuary is an ancient story, dating back to the time of the Christian reconquest: at the end of the 10th century, some nuns who were fleeing the troops of Almançor, the caliph of Córdoba, hid an image of the Virgin under a lapa (rock which forms a cave or natural shelter). In 1493, this image was rediscovered by a 12-year-old shepherdess named Joana, who found it after passing through a narrow crevice. Joana was mute, but when her mother tried to throw the image into the fire, she regained her ability to speak.
The fame of this miracle then spread throughout the region, giving rise to a cult and pilgrimages to the site. The first devotees enthroned the image inside the cave, with the belief becoming widespread that anyone could pass through that narrow crevice, unless they had committed some serious sin.
In 1498, a first chapel was erected next to the rock and, in 1576, the sanctuary was entrusted to the priests of the Society of Jesus, based in Coimbra, who then built the current sanctuary that houses the rock inside.
On August 15th of each year, the feast of Senhora da Lapa is celebrated, attracting thousands of pilgrims in fulfillment of promises or out of simple devotion.
Along with Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, these became the two most important Sanctuaries on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1951.
