I've ordered from Nurseries Caroliniana also out of SC and they also ship plants in plastic bags. Their explanation for doing that was Dept. of Agriculture regulations. Apparently, they treat for certain pests to keep them from spreading. I would be careful handling the potting medium those plants are in, may have residual pesticides in it!

Good point about the pesticides! The only thing that doesn't ring true about nurcar's explanation is that a bunch of other nursuries do ship in plastic pots. Packing and shipping plants is a totally different skill set from growing plants... Unfortunately there appear to be a number of high-quality nurseries out there who haven't quite figured out how to pack and ship. forestfarm.com even has a video tutorial showing how they do it, so it's not a big secret.

Very nice, I picked up some 3gal and 1 gal Longstalk Holly's from a place in Ohio called Holly Ridge Nursery. As the name suggests, they sell many holly's!

That's cool... Do you see a lot of Longstalk Holly growing in yards where you live? I'm curious about how fast they grow and how big they get.

No not at all, in fact I didn't even know they existed until I was on the hunt for some american holly's and found the nursery online which I mentioned. The growth is unusual. I would say slow, with the exception of an occasional horizontal shoot that takes off from various areas of the plant. Those shoots grow quick, everything else slow! Very hardy as a broadleaf evergreen.@@moseseisley557

Nice plants. I've purchased from Woodlanders before. Most things lived, but I wonder did you ever try Ilex latifolia? I wondered if you had that one and maybe I missed the video.

Good question! I did try ilex latifolia, but it died when the temperature dropped below 0° - so not cold hardy. I never even made a video about that one.

Their shipping would not bother me, especially if they have the product. Stay well and safe, remain positive.

Insulation from external heat is a major concern for mail-order trees. I have seen that newspaper packed method result in cooked trees during warm weather. In contrast, even trees left on a sunny porch for a few hours have been fine when packed using the air-gap method.
