It is so much more satisfying to watch Split without knowing that it's connected to Unbreakable at all. SPOILER . . . . I remember watching Split in the theaters, and I was already used to watching the credits for mid/post-credits scene (thanks, MCU) so when an additional scene started early in the credits I thought "Oh, this might be something interesting" but was not thinking of a sequel at all. Then when one of the diner patrons started talking about that guy who caused all of those disasters, and we heard an unseen Bruce Willis speak, I literally said "Holy shit!" in the theater. I think I may have been the only one in the theater to react like this so people around me either hadn't seen Unbreakable or didn't remember it - I had to explain to my family with me why I was so excited by this scene.

I love how this movie doesn't sugarcoat things. David was real and gritty. The way he shows flaws by taking off his wedding ring at the beginning. The somewhat dark way he chokes out the kidnapper, instead of trying to bring him in. Elijah suggested a more realistic kind of hero than what we're used to, and that's what we got.

"Notice the slightly disproportionate size of Jaguaro's head... but only in villains." Notice the slightly disproportionate size of Sam Jackson's hair... This is easily my favorite Samuel L Jackson role. The way he delivers the final lines, "It was the kids! They called me Mr. Glass." fading into a whisper, is a great example of a talented actor using their voice as an instrument. The acting style of Bruce Willis really fits well with the slow pace of some of these M. Night films, filled with a sad undertone.

"I really like his coat... shiny bronze" With a purple lining 😉 M Night uses a lot of color theory in Unbreakable as it a common element in comics. I love how Elijah is color coded in purple and David in green. One of my favorite superhero movies and, in my opinion, Shyamalan's best film. I always get a bit choked up at the end. Elijah was such a sympathetic character, and Audrey was right about how being broken physically so many times can break someone's mind. The hand he was dealt was so awful that he *needed* there to be a deeper reason for it, and it drove him to evil to find that reason. The exploration of purpose was so well done, with Elijah and David both. And there were so many smart thematic choices, even going so far as deliberately framing things like comic panels. Shyamalan at his best.

This movie gives us a very down-to-earth measured theme reveal on how an enhanced human can exist. Every scene sets a slow, deliberate pace that works well. The only scene that bothers me a little is how clueless David was on the weight his son kept adding to his barbell. One scene that makes me laugh a bit inside is when the two kids David rescued are now rescuing him from the pool. They were standing there oddly as he is recovering at the poolside. It's as if they were thinking "Why couldn't you just get out of the pool?"

Remember that this film came out in 2000, before the MCU was a thing. All we had of superhero movies were the Superman and Batman films, and Blade. X-Men came out in the same year as Unbreakable but nobody knew that was going to be the success it was. So a mainstream movie that took comicbooks, its characters and tropes, etc as seriously as this film does was surprising for many viewers.

As a comic fan when i was young... I loved how he "framed" each scene the way its composed in a comic book. It is the best translation of a graphic novel to film. I think the big twist with Split being connected to Unbreakable really only hit for people who saw Split in theaters at the time and were completely blindsided by it. Every single time I've seen a reactor approach this "trilogy", the "twist" was already ruined because of the nature of react channel coordination. As soon as an excited fan says "before you watch Split you have to see Unbreakable" the twist is ruined haha. Even vague allusions to the connection are spoilers.
@kaiielle

Exactly. This is a perfect example of how some movies at initial release gave the audience an experience that is nearly impossible to replicate for people later on. And that's okay. I'm actually glad that I knew going in that this was the first in a trilogy because even if, somehow, the miracle occurred that I wasn't spoiled on Split at all, I have no clue when I would have scheduled that. It's possible that I may have never ended up reacting to it if I had thought it was just another stand-alone of M. Night's.

I love this movie...a more realistic take on superhero. The saddness he felt was "not protecting people" his innate nature. Yes, he was security guard, but I think he wanted to do more. AKA Elijah commented why he went into security. I can attest to that as veteran I enjoyed being in the military because I loved knowing that a lot of our missions were to help people and in the military you "serving something higher than yourself" and I think that is what David felt to. My daughter alone told me she is proud I served. So yes you as parent can inspire and not all heroes wear capes. I loved the take on hero trying to find himself to figure out he did have "gifts" but also had wife and son and to be just regular man. Elijah was right that he gave it up for "a woman" but I would say more that he gave it up for love and family. Like Clark did in Smallville. I am really glad you enjoyed it.

🤔 3 things to notice at the end: #1 The Camera shot of David getting out of the pool And standing tall with the kids in the frame With his raincoat From Behind, it looks like a superhero cape😮 #2 The orange-suit man Was really strong. He literally open the door with one hand with the dad putting his whole Body weight to try and prevent him from entering but still and You saw how easily he was carrying David on his back But the Unbreakable💪 already had his grip around his neck, So it was over for the orange man #3 the camera shot of david carrying his wife up the stairs to his room🤔 Look at that scene again and you'll see How the camera is moving easily with the movements Of the actors. That makes it look like david is flying(slowly) up the stairs With his Wife in his arms, It's so smooth. Watch that scene again😁

A very good reaction, KL. When Unbreakable was released, there were a lot of people excited to see what Shyamalan would have next. This was his next movie after The Sixth Sense, which was a major hit. You'll love The Sixth Sense, and you will continue to see how good of an actor Bruce Willis really is. Anyway, the reaction to Unbreakable was a big divide. Some people found it very creative, others found it to be utterly ridiculous. This would go on to continue with Shyamalan's movies. You either love or hate them. I think Unbreakable is fantastic. You echoed my sentiments. The acting, writing and cinematography are all top notch, as is the use of music. David is a flawed, yet kind person. Elijah, we find out is so obsessed with finding his equal, that he has become a maniac. It's unfortunate that this movie is not as well revered as other movies. It has great storytelling and a very satisfying end.

About making this film, Shyamalan said that he was interested in making a superhero film, and learned that most superhero stories/films have 3 acts: (1) the hero learns how to use their powers, (2) the hero becomes and established hero and first fights their main villain, and (3) the hero and villain have their final battle. As he was developing this story, he realized that he was only interested in Act 1, which is how he wrote this film. This film ends at about the 40 minute point of most other superhero origin films.

So looking up information to find out it was part of a trilogy kinda spoils the "twist" that Shyamalan is known for. I remember seeing this in theaters and loving every second. It was also one of the first movies to be released on DVD at that time and I didn't hesitate to get it. This is probably my favorite M. Night film though and not surprisingly it was the one that no one really appreciated upon release. Now a lot more people have warmed up to it

MNS is one of those directors that makes me wonder how the fuck any of his stuff is getting green lit. Dude has made bomb after bomb since The Village came out.

I always liked the movie, but never liked the way it ended so abruptly, with text. It feels like David is disgusted with Glass's reveal, and is just walking away from the life he wants him to have, which doesnt give him much of an arc, if he goes back to just being a husband and father. I wanted him to walk away, and on the way home determined to be free of all of it he gets the flash of one more crime about to happen, and you know theres no way back to normal life, hes in the hero business for good

I can't believe you have not seen 'The Sixth Sense'. Shyamaylan's finest movie, in my opinion.

Check out 2009 Surrogates with Bruce Willis. Even if you don't make a reaction out of it, its worth checking out. If you do watch it keep the camara handy just in case.

I'm sure the list you saw was made after Split/Glass came out and was trying to warn that it's not a solo watch.

While I love this movie, honestly my favorite parts are the shots around Philly. Having David work at UPenn's field is nice, and you get to see a lot of University City and West Philadelphia.

M. Night feels too many directors rely on soundtracks to cause emotions rather than good story telling, which is why he uses it sparingly.

An awesome reaction and breakdown. Please temper your excitement for further Shyamalan films as he does hit a bad patch at some point. The Sixth Sense is not one of those and neither is Split which I firmly believe should have garnered James McAvoy an Academy Award for his unbelievable performance. Incidentally, Split is most definitely a horror thriller. Please do not read anything else to do with this film. Go in blind. I love your honest reactions.

Looked through the comments and I know you’ve been suggested this from M. Night, but you didn’t list The 6th Sense as one of your watches. It is another excellent directed and Bruce Willis starring film. If you haven’t actually watched, I and others like me, would highly recommend it to you.

@@kaiielleexcellent. Most people mention 6th Sense as first time watchers before Signs so it was an odd curiosity I wanted to flesh out. Thank you and have a good weekend.

Honestly every time I watch Unbreakable or any of Shyamalan's first few movies his later output becomes so much more dissapointing. He was such a great filmmaker, but he got trapped by his own storytelling conventions.
