DENJIRO: Today, I’ll show you an experiment you can do at home. I’m sure you’ve seen an air vortex cannon before. The projectile that is fired out is a spinning ring called a vortex ring. Did you know that you can fire an air vortex cannon under water? Let me show you.
You’ll need a plastic bottle like this. Inside the water is a machine that creates bubbles. Let me submerge the bottle where the bubbles are and fill it with water. Now let me squeeze the bottle.
BOY: It’s a ring!
DENJIRO: Just like earlier with air, water is being shot out as a vortex ring. The bubbles get caught in the swirl and form a ring. Also, with the underwater vortex cannon, the ring breaks when it hits the wall. But watch what happens when I shoot it toward the surface of the water with a slight tilt.
BOY: It bounced off the surface of the water!
DENJIRO: It hits the surface and bounces off. What is the best angle to have it cleanly bounce off the surface? Try figuring it out.
NARRATION: You can buy the machine that makes bubbles at a pet shop in the tropical fish section.
DENJIRO: You can easily observe the vortex ring of an underwater vortex cannon using a straw. Let me get a little colored water with the straw and drop it in this container of water. The colored water falls as a vortex ring. If you look closely, you’ll see that it spins outward.
NARRATOR: What happens if you change the speed of the colored water? Try experimenting and observe.
DENJIRO: I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
