Burton Cummings learned to play the flute for this song. In his old band The Deverons he played saxophone. Randy Bachman encouraged him to play the flute for some of their songs, to give them a spacier feel. Right after Randy wrote Undun, The Guess Who played a YAMAHA music store opening where they had a flute in the display case. Burton learned from the dealer that the fingering for the flute was the same as a sax (except for C), and a classic was born.

I play both sax and flute and you are right that there are some key fingerings that are the same but the embouchure and everything about making a decent sound on a flute is completely different. It is not by any stretch easy to "pick it up". Most people do not see the thousands of hours most musicians struggle to learn their craft to make that 4 minute video look easy.

Loved my transistor radio...so cool. Your comment reminded me of my younger years and how one night during the holidays my dad kept calling me "transistor sister" (being the oldest child I was always called "sis"). After the New Year, I discovered from my Mom, who always got the gifts from Santa, that Dad had actually bothered to go and shop for and buy me a pocket-size am/fm tranistor radio when he had never done anything like this before. Of course, Mom had already bought one and it was wrapped from Santa. Their inside joke since I unknowingly had 2, was to call me transistor sister. Just a little thing to most, but one of the few feel good moments I can recall. I'm soon to be 65 , they are both gone but the euphoric recall feels like yesterday
