The University of Miami (UM) Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) program teaches parents and their children how to positively interact and communicate more effectively, transforming their relationships - and their lives - for the better.
Designed for families with children who display serious behavioral problems they aren’t equipped to handle themselves, therapists observe and coach parents during real exchanges with their children via an earpiece and one-way glass. The de-escalation methods learned, and the positive interactions that result in improved behavior, reduce the risk of child abuse and can be life-altering. The work is but a part of the impact UM PCIT is making on the community.
The program also serves families with children who have hearing loss, intellectual disabilities, speech delays and/or autism spectrum disorders, and closely collaborates with ConnectFamilias, a service partnership within Little Havana, to ensure that residents in historically underserved neighborhoods have access to vital services right in their community.
UM PCIT has helped over 250 families “graduate” from its services since 2011, and resulted in parent reports of significant reductions in child behavior problems and parenting-related stress. For many families, UM PCIT has positively changed the trajectory of their lives.
