Cool tip, I see that being useful for a lot of users. The only thing missing is how to NOT have it punch in/out when you're actually using your MIDI contoller to record MIDI information. You wouldn't want this to happen every time you want to sustain your piano patch! It would perhaps have been good to mention using a particular channel (e.g. switch to channel 12 for punch in mode).

I have a guitar; I have Reaper... I have a midi controller.. And I have a sustain pedal that I'm not currently using!! This is Amazing!!! I've been extremely frustrated trying to record guitar and having to press that button first. I've been watching your videos on Reaper for years and my jaw keeps dropping... "it... it does that?!?" Thanks so much Kenny for your videos and help!! (the animation you've been adding recently has been fun too!)

Since my primary instrument is sax, this will work just as well for me as for any pointy-boot-wearing guitar player. Thanks, Kenny!

Yes sir, I use the piano pedal on my piano for this purpose. One of the first things I did when starting this journey. Not being a guitar player, this is sooooo helpful.

Seems to me it would also be good for doing vocals remotely - really excellent! Thanks Kenny

You can also use a numerical keypad or a usb keyboard and assign keystrokes to it and pluck off the keys you arent using and now you have a usb multi trigger interface

Excellent tutorial Kenny, can In please ask you if this can be used in the same way to stop/start a specific FX in a chain, for example if I'm wanting to switch on distortion in a specific part of a guitar track as I'm recording, so I suppose I mean as if I was using a conventional pedalboard

Thanks Kenny, you are the best! By the way, would this type pedal would be suitable to stop recording if I stop pressing the pedal? I'm working on a looping setup using MIDI pedals and I would like to economize actions if possible.

Now when I use the sustain pedal for its original use while midi recording, does it start recording all over? I‘ll try when I get back to the studio. Anyhow, another awesome video Kenny, thank you!

Very useful and needed tip! Thx. But one problem: can't stop recording when using the sustain pedal (NP-1 in Nektar Panorama T4)... and tried everything (i suppose). Is there something I overlooked?

Actually, I just realised that I have a question about routing for this set-up. I presume we are talking about: 1. USB out from the MIDI controller (or MIDI cable - DIN? - out, if it is a very old controller or keyboard), into a USB port on the computer, and 2. Guitar going into an audio interface, and that audio interface being plugged into a second USB port on the computer Is that right? If not, how would the routing for this be accomplished?

The sustain pedal has a 1/4 male jack usually. Most midi keyboard will have a sustain pedal input. The keyboard will be plugged in to the computer using a printer USB cable. The audio interface will plug in with same type of cable generally.

@MrThompsonMW Thanks very much 😀. After I posted this question, I remembered that a few years ago I used to set up my midi keyboard in the way you described, going directly into the computer , and simultaneously set up my audio interface with my guitar going into it. Funny how my memory of this completely deserted me for a while. Thanks again.

I know that Kenny is great at what he does and is highly regarded around the Reaper community. I myself have also found his videos to be very helpful. However, there are times where I just can't maintain proper concentration when the guy is completely pausing after every couple of words. It's bizarre. Even if he's performing the functions while simultaneously trying to read from a script, it still doesn't really make sense to me why he can't chain together a full sentence every once in a while.... Maybe there's some kind of explanation, and if so, I definitely wouldn't take offense to someone enlightening me.
