A brief spoken lecture, based on the technique Martha Argerich applies for virtuoso octave playing. This will be part of a longer blog post to be published on pianoscience.blogspot.com
I explain why you cannot genuinely relegate the hand to a role of only transmitting arm energy- without actively increasing exertion on the hand. Although this supposedly takes the load off the hand, the opposite is true. In reality, the premise of the hand as a passive transmitter forces more effort from it, and requires more strength. The flawed premise only works in practice if you should develop an instinct add a sufficient movement within the hand, without excess weight at impact. Timed hand movement is what buys true freedom of motion and rebounds you back into full comfort.
