Sorry but i disagree with the take on coaches. Its not all about “getting the lucky bounce”. Coaches with a lot of prestige bring along with them a sense of respect and ambition. Also tactically Berhalter was completely outplayed last game against Netherlands. Other coaches would have adapted better to that game.

Lalas's poll had Gregg at a 24% approval rate. There is a reason for that. The tactics & player selection he employed during his tenure, along with his hiring processes scream of ineptitude & corruption. Van gaal even went out of his way to point out the incompetency. We're at the point where anyone could take over and make the national team better by simply playing the best players, which the interim coaches have shown. The hope for Berhalter, is that he becomes a completely different coach, which at that point you should just hire someone else. We're trying to move forward as a soccer nation and compete with SA & Europe. Coaching is a part of that.

Literally the main job of a coach is to make the team better than the sum of its parts. That's it. Otherwise, why have a coach at all? Now, please go ahead and list the games where Gregg did this. What games did the team perform better than the sum of its parts? The answer is not many at all. Can probably count them on one hand. Conversely, how many games did the team play worse than the sum of their parts under Gregg? Well, we can conformable say every single away game. Which means, if we are generous to Gregg, easily half of the games they played, they were worse than the sum of their parts. That's on Gregg. And that's why he doesn't deserve to be anywhere near this team. That's why fans are pissed. Because not only does he elevate the team, he literally holds them back. He makes them worse.

I think what upsets so many people is not necessarily the decision to rehire Gregg, but how it was handled and communicated to the fans. Don't try to convince us that a thorough search and interview process lead to this decision; we're smarter than that. There's no way that in a pool containing Jesse Marsch, Patrick Vieira, etc Gregg wins that job, especially after the drama that went down. And I feel bad for Gregg a little because his legacy will ALWAYS have an asterisk next to it because of how poorly the federation has handled both his hiring and rehiring. If they just came out, gave him a contract, and gotten on with it in April/May this wouldn't be such a big stink.

There have been a number of analytical studies on various impacts of coaches in various sports. For the most part, the conclusions support the idea that there isn't much of a difference from one coach to the next. Some studies show that elite tier coaches outperform the competition, but these guys are few and far between and aren't relevant to the USMNT discussion. There's a famous Freakonomics blog titled "Is Changing the Coach Really The Answer" that surmizes many of the studies if you'd like to read more.

@YankReport I'm not say that we need a Klopp or Pep or whatever high name manager that is out there, but we do need a manager that will put our best players on the field and put them in the best situation. In the few games Anthony Hudson and BJ Callahan have managed, the team has looked way better than the team played in the World Cup. Greg is the manager now there's no changing that, but he has to have seen that this team plays best when they run up the field and get creative. If he does that, then USSF made the right choice. If he doesn't and they go back playing the way they did, they might get out of the group stage, but that is it.

With the USA in the first pot for group selection as the host, quarters is a COMPLETELY realistic goal. Without a top 8 team in the group, we should win the group, and have a good chance to beat a second-place finisher from another group. With the home field advantage, saying we are happy with R16 is a mistake. Positives of GGG: - We had good recruiting (although we recruited Balogun in the interim, so maybe that wasn't him?) - We had mostly good vibes among the players in camp. By all accounts the camps were well run. Negatives of GGG: - Clashed with some players - not just Reyna but also Brooks and several others - Blatantly played favorites toward some loyal players who struggle even in MLS, and bizarrely passed over some who have been consistent performers in higher leagues. This applies to both team selection and lineup selection. - Tactical inflexibility - constantly pushing a rigid 4-3-3, and never tried the 4-2-3-1 with less restrictions that clearly seems to fit our personnel the best. - An outwardly prickly, not very media friendly figure, which matters a lot as we approach a cycle with enormous visibility for the USMNT - The Reyna story is going to create a ton of baggage that follows the team around. Sure, Mourinho, et al, was unrealistic. But I really can't understand selecting Gregg over Marsch. It was an inside job, plain and simple. The "search" was a farce.

To take your Hansi Flick example further, I think GGG is more of an example where a, to put it kindly, a wrong coach hinders the team's potential. We know of his 'system' which handicaps our player's strengths and freedom/creativity and his reluctance to find a system that suits our players. He is the other way around, thus not only forcing the players to overthink, but choosing underserving players (we have our suspects) because of the system. The Mexico game, where an interim of the interim took charge, who allowed much more flexibility in the formation and tactics, was one of our most eye-pleasing games (in play and results) in years. I just hope that Matt Crocker, being in his position, will have some influence in player selection and tactics and if BJ continues to be part of the coaching staff, can have some input as well. Also, GGG will have to stop being the stubborn mule that he was during the 2022 cycle, listen, adapt, repair bridges with certain players (it seems all are willing to 'move forward' - a US Soccer motto, if im not mistaken), then i think this hire could work.

You will probably never see this squad again until the 2026 world cup after he's changed the lineup a thousand times with Aaron Long being started over CCV or something ridiculous like that with Jordan Morris or Jesus Ferreira up top over Pepi and Balogun. The quality of the coach DOES matter, Sam. How is it that coaches like John Herdman and Hugo Perez, coaches with less depth and talent on their squads, always out coach and outmaneuver Gregg? I think we can all agree that top 5 teams at this juncture of the USMNT's development will win more often than not, but a good manager will give you a fighting chance and make the other team really work to earn the result. Look at how easily Gregg gave the game away against Holland with his naive tactics. Van Gaal ate his lunch. That match was over as soon as the Dutch scored early. Imagine how differently that match would have looked in play and outcome if Van Gaal and GGG had switched sides with VG coaching the USA and GGG coaching the Dutch. Now THAT would have been a match worth watching. At the very least, me knows the boys would really have given the Dutch a run for their money! We'll see history repeat itself if GGG stays through 2026. We'll lose to the first tough team we face with at least 4 MLS players on the field who clearly aren't going to be up to scratch internationally and with a naive tactical scheme that any local youth coach could figure out. And if you want a final example of how coaching matters, look at how Jorge Luis Pinto's Costa Rica team played against the Dutch in the 'knock out' round of the 2014 World Cup. The Dutch were clearly better on paper but the 'Ticos' took them to the brink, forcing a penalty 'shoot out' which the Dutch barely won. A truly good manager will always make you look competitive against the best and whenever GGG faces those tests, he always fails miserably. It's hilarious how the team has played so much better under these two interim managers than they ever did under him🤣 Finally, let's address the 'elephant in the room'. Gregg was never hired for 'sporting' reasons. It was a marketing ploy. The USSF knows it has in Gregg a puppet whose strings can easily be pulled to promote MLS through his 'call-ups'. How else can you explain his continually bizarre and 'head-scratching' squad selections? There may be a few other factors and agendas at play in terms of why the federation prefers Gregg but the use of the national team as a vehicle of promotion for MLS is the overriding one. The fans deserve better and shouldn't be made to settle with such an unambitious choice in the run-up to the most important World Cup in the country's history.

My opinion of GGG being a terrible coach has to do with the decisions GGG made for the 2022 WC... 1. Though he covered his azz in the last minute, he was almost not going to bring Tim Ream to the WC. He never played him ONCE during qualifying even though he was the captain of an EPL team 2. He left Pepi off the plane. You can argue whether he deserved to start or not, but not brining him was a rookie league mistake...Nah, even a rookie would have brought Pepi... 3. Not playing Reyna. Are we that deep that our starter for Dortmund that plays next to Bellingham doesn't even play? What a joke. 4. Tactically made a fool of by Holland. Their coach was laughing at him post game. He was like Kasperov in chess and GGG was like a 3rd grader. And this guy gets his job back as coach? Why, because we made it out of the knock out round? We scored 2 total goals...one against a Whales team that got scored on 3 times by England and an Iran team that got scored on 6 times!! by England. And Puli had to make magic happen to even get that goal to move on by sacrificing his body.

My thoughts on the coaching hire: I think you’re right in saying, the player talents and instincts will ultimately be the deciding factor and the baseline for competition, regardless of coaching. However, the importance of a coaching to discover how to improve the overall ceiling, team dynamics, and pace and flow of the game. Frankly, Berhalter does not do that well tactically, substitutions, and player selections. He will not improve our ceiling, and unlock our team’s true potential. Look at pep, mourinho, ancelotti and most recently Claudio Ranieri with Cagliari. I know we’re not expecting to get a high profile coach like those but we need a coach who has those qualities to rally together our bes players to play in a way that is dynamic. Berhalter is that NOT coach and he already plays favorite with some players and ostracized some of our best talent.

A couple of takes... This particular cycle could have and should have interested any top manager that can speak English (and Spanish). The reason being that unless they're not allowed to do personal endorsements, a high profile head coach of the USMNT could leverage their increased visibility to a lot of commercial deals since the world cup will be in North America. With Berhalter being the 13th highest paid coach at the 2022 WC, what's to say that the federation couldn't get a high profile coach with base pay inside the top 10 for 2026 and that coach then can top up with endorsements? The Berhalter vs Gio Reyna thing could have been a thing of the past, which would have been really nice. Ultimately, I want the federation to have balls. It's okay that they wanted to rehire him but they should be willing to let him go if the next 6 months aren't going well in terms of these players playing with freedom. We've been what they look like playing with freedom under the two interim managers and needless to say, it's been nice. If he having had them a cycle already can't get the same or more out of them than we've seen with the interims, NEXT. New managers and give that new person 3 years to do something new. A coach may not have such a big an impact in terms of results as the players play, however I feel that is ingenious for you to say that seeing that the coach PICKS the players that are played. You can't sit there and say that leaving out Pepi and not playing Reyna doesn't have an impact in results. So I argue that the coach ABSOLUTELY has the biggest impact if the player selection is bad especially if your player selection is favoring a worse league with players that wouldnt even make the squad for anyone in our region (Long, Morris, Roldan) compared to players that push themselves in better leagues playing against better players with pressure that you won't see in the MLS is absolutely a major part of why we didnt play as well as we should have. Listen, you can't sit there and say that only winning 1 competitive CONCACAF game away with the players we have is not on the coach when the coach puts a lineup that had Lleget in the starting lineup for most of his concacaf games.

I don't know, Sam. I think the world's game has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. I think that there are like 5 elite teams. The difference between teams 6-20 is marginal. I don't know if I'd agree with the first point. I would say the closer you get to the top the bigger the disparity gets. If you look at metrics like "minutes played in top 5 leagues" "minutes played in champions league" "transfer value of squad", the differences become exponentially greater as you climb the mountain. According to Statista, the USMNT transfer value was roughly half that of the Netherlands, and the Netherlands was roughly half that of Brazil and France. (Argentina was around Netherlands). One of my critiques of berhalter have always been his unwillingness to change tactics. No legit top contender has their international team learn the "system" when you are outwardly being criticized about how one dimensional you are by another coach, that just proves how easy it is to prepare for him. Secondly. The U.S scored two goals in group stage, one fluke in the Netherlands match. His style of attack is just not good. Thirdly. People talk about marsch. He is a system oriented coach as well. The coach 100% matters and is important for how a national team performs. Sure the player quality ultimately will be the biggest predictor of how far a team goes but having a manager who builds an identity that fits the player pool, properly selects rosters, is good at managing individual egos, and can make the necessary adjustments is necessary for any team that plans on going far and this is especially true if you are a national team like the US where your talent isn’t amongst the top 10 in the world. The only counter example I can think of really is France in 2006. Sure luck is a small part of the game as well but honestly this is less so the case nowadays with VAR. I truly believe that when everyone is healthy/available then our best formation is the 4-2-3-1 and the question becomes which # 8 (McKennie or Musah) gets the start and which comes off the bench. In the last cycle the 4-3-3 w/ MMA as the midfield was the preferred line-up, but it struggled to create attack. In that lineup Reyna or any #10 becomes a hard fit. In a 4-2-3-1 we get to rotate McKennie & Musah....keeping them both fresh across the tournament...and get to add someone to help pick the lock of the defense. succession

Personally, I probably would have preferred trying Vieira over bringing back Berhalter, but that being said I completely agree with you that the level of melodrama over Berhalter's rehiring is way over the top. Berhalter is unexciting, but he's "fine" as a coach and the players seem to largely love him, which is important, Pulisic's statement in support of Berhalter recently was pretty clear. And you're right that it's not like our other options were incredible, world class coaches, Marsch and Vieira are fine, but they aren't amazing options themselves who would elevate the team beyond someone like Berhalter. Part of our fanbase seems to assume we could hire a world class coach, but it's just not realistic. For one thing, very few world class coaches are even interested in national team jobs (most prefer to stick with big clubs), and even among those who might take a national team job, they are going to want a truly top tier national team job like France or Spain or Brazil, not a mid-tier national team job like ours. Managing the US to win a couple Gold Cups and maybe make the quarters at the World Cup if we do well is simply not as appealing or financially lucrative as managing a big club in the Champion's League.

Criticism of this hiring has been "overwhelming" because the re-hiring of GGG has been such a complete SNAFU by the USSF that it unites the entire fanbase in anger. If you were not a fan of GGG coming back, you won't like the re-hire. And if you were a supporter of GGG being rehired, the way in which it was done has been a waste of time and resources. The USSF's communications around the changing of executives, the circus involving GGG/Reyna, and the search for a coach, have been chock full of corporate blandishments claiming that transparency and change in governance were on the way in the USSF. The World Cup was coming, and along with it would come fresh faces, new ideas, and a coach to build upon the foundation of the last cycle. I think the fanbase and much of the media were rightly anticipating change after months of uncertainty and all the other changes in the organization. I wanted a new coach, but I've accepted it and I suppose we'll just have to see whether GGG and the team can improve upon the Qatar performances. However, from an organizational standpoint, the re-hiring of Gregg signals to me that the USSF continues to operate exactly the same as before. It's business as usual, except now USSF will use the word "analytics" more when pretending to tell us why they are doing things.

25:58 This Hansi Flick argument is awful and you're just targeting rare/minority events as overall examples to fit your narrative. So you've accepted that the ceiling of a team is based on pure luck and you're fine with just sitting around crossing your fingers for things to go your way? Yes, sometimes you need the ball to bounce your way but a good coach can extract the most out of his players' potential, and situate your team in the position to increase those "luck" moments for your quality players to capitalize on. And with your narrative, yes Hansi Flick failed, but what about the coaches that get paid well and got their teams far, what about the coaches that gets paid less than Berhalter, that don't hold their players' quality back, and got their teams much further than the US? It's not always about money and resume, but it's about actual quality, and evidence of improvements, and Berhalter hadn't show much of it in the last 4 years. And why are you only comparing Berhalter to Marsch and Viera? Because those are the only 2 names that USSF can probably say that they've talked to (forget interviews cause they probably didn't). Can't tell you how many times throughout that press conference they hide behind "data", "worldwide search", "extensive process", etc. and lied straight to our faces. They've given no other names so no one can check on it, and we won't have to because there were none in the first place. Whoever enjoys this rehire or giving Berhalter excuses like yourself can hold on to your mediocre standard and lack of ambition. P.s. By no means I want to attack you or people who support this decision through this comment. This is me being passionately pissed off at USSF. You can be happy about this result but we all are being robbed by USSF of quality and diligent work ethics, honesty, and transparency. Leaving us to come up with our own narratives to satisfy ourselves and in doing that, divide us.

I said a team's ceiling is largely going to be defined by the quality of the players and that variance can play a part. I gave an example of Flick and Germany to show that even with a great coach and a talented roster, things don't always go your way. I don't think it's a great look for US Soccer to reveal all the candidates who were interviewed but didn't get the job. Professional courtesy for discretion. I don't think the ambition of the fanbase is going to impact results. USA beat the snot out of Mexico inspite of the ambition of Mexico's fan base.

Forget Gio exists. Gregg will never play him. If by miracle he does, it'll be on the wing where he is much less effective. Berhalter ball incoming. 😂

Gregg will play Gio. I’m not sure where Gio’s most effective position is yet. He will probably play multiple positions.

Berhalter coming back wasn't my first choice, but the idea Reyna won't play under him is nonsense. You realize that the current coaching staff under Hudson and Callaghan is just Berhalter's coaching staff right? Hudson and Callaghan were his assistants. So this idea that Reyna isn't welcome with the team due to Berhalter and his coaching staff is ridiculous considering he just started all 3 Nation's League games under Hudson and Callaghan with essentially the same coaching staff other than Berhalter himself. By all accounts, the differences between Reyna and Berhalter were initially worked out during the World Cup itself, that's why Reyna played the 2nd half against the Netherlands, he wasn't totally frozen out even at that point. Reyna's parents turned the situation into a much bigger issue and dragged it out into this prolonged, ridiculous blackmail attempt, but that was Reyna's parents, not Gio himself. Based on Berhalter's own statements on the topic there is zero indication that Gio won't be called up and played.

@@YankReport He's too slow to play on the wing. But gregg will shoehorn players into the system he's a slave to. Natl coaches can't pick their talent like club coaches.
