I served on the Little Rock right out of OS "A" school in 1976 for the last 6 months of her commissioning. At that time she was homeported in Gaeta, Italy as the 6th Fleet flagship. Rode her back to Philadelphia for decommissioning before moving on to my next unit. Great memories. Thanks for the video and what you do to preserve her.

Thank you! You must have been one of the youngest crew on board. An old crewman visited last year with a similar story. He joined in April '76 and rode the ship to decommissioning too. Glad you enjoyed! There's a lot of videos about Little Rock on our channel.

@@BuffaloNavalParkYes, I was 19 when several of us from the same OS class flew to Italy to meet her in Gaeta. After we came back to Philly about a dozen of us from OI Division were transferred to the pre-commissioning unit for the USS King DDG-41 where we were the core group in her CIC. I recently watched a video from another channel where you led a tour group down to CIC. It was the first time I had seen my old work space in almost 47 years. Man, did the memories come flooding back.

Back in the late 70's and mid-80's, my Dad would take me to the RAWNY Ham Radio field day held on board the ship. He would operate one of the rigs, and I would hang out. Being a young kid at the time, I was thrilled to get to go with the club members into parts of the shipped that were off-limits to the general public. They were setting up antennas or troubleshooting coax connections. One year, one of the sons of one of the higher-up park employees was there. He was able to show me various parts of the ship, including the insides of one of the forward turrets that was off limits. I remember seeing how much the paint peeled and all the leftover debris in those areas.

@@roysmith120 During his junior year at the Naval Academy, Staubach's color-blindness was detected and he was commissioned directly into the Supply Corps, which did not necessitate being able to tell the difference between red (port) and green (starboard) lights or to discern the color differences in electrical circuitry. After graduating from the Naval Academy in June 1965,[16] Staubach could have requested an assignment in the United States, but he chose to volunteer for a one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam. Ummm, the low pressure turbine gets its steam from the high pressure turbine. I wish people that worked on these museum ships would do more research. Former MM1 hole snipe. Basic steam cycle is available on line.during ahead operations, the steam goes thru the HP turbine, then it exhaust into the LP turbine then it’s exhausted into the main condenser. During astern operations the steam only goes in to the ends of the astern elements then into the main condenser. LP turbine has the astern elements on the ends and the reason why the steam flows thru the HP then to the LP turbine during ahead steaming is for efficiency. Just putting stem in the lp turbine for ahead operations is very NON- efficient.

@@BuffaloNavalPark Plot 5 was what we called the 5'" gun control room, well below the main deck. It had a Mk 37 targeting computer, stable element and all the hardware needed to operate the 5" mount, plus the triggers for firing the guns from the Plot 5 station. My wife and I were just there to see CLG 4 Monday. The director decks weren't accessible, and the 5" plotting room is well below the waterline and was also not accessible. All my work was well below the waterline, or on the Mk 37 director deck. I remember operating a TDT (target data transmitter) way back in April of 1972 when a MiG 17 did a run at us, but I digress.. (I do that a lot lately) A very interesting tour though. It brought back a lot of memories of my time on CLG 5, and I hadn't snapped a salute to the ensign before boarding since 1972. I see that paying a bit more gets a personal tour with additional access, so I may have to return.

We've made most of the emergency repairs we can. We have noticed three more holes in the forward engine room that were not there when we started back in March. We've got pumps going, but we haven't been able to patch them yet. We're still terribly short staffed and our diver won't be back until after July 4. Ultimately, she's rightsized and stable and 95% of the water has been pumped out. We're over 50% towards our 1 million dollar goal to have the hull painted with a two part epoxy paint that when dried will be similar to a fiberglas material. Thanks!
