It was the drive shaft between the diesel and gas powered engines was the fatal flaw in the first batch of the Freedom class ships. It was found out by the US Navy to in order make this fix on this batch / flight of Freedom class ships - that a good portion cut of hull had be made to get to it and replace it- the US Navy officials realized that it was cheaper to incorporate this fix in the building of newer Freedom class ships. The sailors assigned to these first batch of the Freedom refer to them as “ Little Crappy Ships”.

And yet they're still building these flawed ships, even as they are decommissioning them. Both types of LCS ships have fatal flaws, the hulls cracking, dissimilar metal corrosion, combining gears breaking down, the list goes on. I can't for the life of me figure out why this program wasn't scrapped years ago. The Freedom class was supposed to have mission modules that could be quickly swapped out to perform a variety of missions, much like the Danish StanFlex system. That never worked out, costing the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. What really gets me is that they're replacing them with the Constellation class frigate, which is a foreign designed ship! What has happened to naval ship building in this country?

C'mon. You know what happened to naval shipbuilding in this country. It was contracted out and the naval yards closed. Then the American yards closed their CONUS yards for their foreign yards or went belly up competing with those yards. We're kind of lucky to still have the relative few we've retained.

That combining gear mess should have had severe penalties for the contractors involved, it's practically criminal that we as taxpayers pay vast sums of money to these contractors for improperly engineered products, and then have to pay more vast sums to fix the mistakes they made. Perhaps it's time to tighten up these contracts, make a lemon product and pay the price.

Most of the LCS boats were named after cities. There are only 2, that I'm aware of, that were not. The 1st was USS Freedom (LCS-1). The other was USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10). That one caused a lot of backlash. All odd hull were Freedom class and had a more or less conventional hull. Notice that most of those that had bad problems were Freedom class. All even numbers were the Independence (LCS-2) class. These are the boats with the trimaran hulls.

I still think a major reason that these ships were built was for political considerations. I'm convinced that the Navy wanted to keep the two yards open that built both LCS class types as a hedge against future contracts so these smaller companies would still have the skill level & tooling to build warships. As soon as the Constellation class FFGs were announced, they cut the order for more Freedom class ships & the yard was immediately retooled to begin cutting steel for the Connies. It makes LCS look like a "Jobs Program" & a strategic move to keep the shipyards in business & able to bid on new contracts. I'm assuming the states where the yards are probably have a strong political pull too & brought that work home for their own benefit.

They can slap some missile pods on the side and maybe overcome some of the mechanical issues, but their mission/class/doctrine is completely out of step with what we are dealing with now. Do you REALLY want to send one these things into a missile basket for coast-launched AsHM's, or expect it to tangle with a Chinese Type 55 destroyer and walk away? Everything I ever hear about this ship class is about how much of a disaster it had been. The money, I think, would have been better spent on a new class of FFG. I get trying out new ideas and methods, but clearly someone, or a bunch of someones, screwed up. Though I do have to say I am biased...
