It's sickening to me how west always portrays Soviet hockey as militaristic in nature. With this constant tone, the idea is to discount everything Tarasov did and how much actually his players liked him. He took Firsov, a war orphan, as his own son. Nowhere the western commentaries mention the fact that his players trained individually o top of their team's training regiment. They absolutely loved the game, and they gave everything they had in themselves to be the best. I was once the top in my own sport. I'm order to get me there, I didn't go out to chase girls. I didn't go to parties, I just trained my ass off, just like anyone who wants to be the best. It does take a hard military discipline where you must dedicate yourself to your goal and train harder than all the others. Does that mean you love every second of it? No. Because it often hurts. There are peaks and valleys on that journey. But you must give it everything you have. Because if you don't, someone else who gave it their all will beat you by that one hundredth of a second, will beat you to the puck at the crucial moment of the game. Winning never comes easy. But when you're this good, you make it look easy

There was one more great coach , who worked with Tarasov , and was in shadow near him - Arkady Chernyshev . He managed soviet union team to their first victories in 1950 - s ; only in couple with him Tarasov managed to build great national team , which was dominating in international hickey at 1960 ' s . He is the coaching teacher of great coaches - Viktor Tihonov , and Vladimir Yurzinov . Very modest man , he avoided personal fame and mass media popularity ; he coached Dynamo Moscow team from it ' s creation in 1946 to 1974 ; he was the soul and the mind of great soviet national team in 1960 ' s ; he was nicknamed by foreign reporters and hockey experts as " Professor of ice hockey " - the best recognition of man ' s talents . He newer has infinite plenary powers in Soviet ice hockey , as Tarasov had , in Dynamo Moscow team played far less great players as in CSKA or Spartak teams - nevertheless , he is one of greatest soviet coaches .

From 1975 to 1991, the clubs of the USSR played 108 matches with the teams of the National Hockey League. During this time, the Clubs of the USSR won 58 victories, 10 matches ended in a draw and lost 40 times to the representatives of the NHL. The most successful team in NHL history is the Montreal Canadiens, with 24 Stanley Cups and 35 Finals appearances. The greatest number of times the winner of the USSR championship was CSKA Moscow - 32. Their meetings with each other: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 12/31/1979 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 4: 2 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 09/18/1990 CSKA - Montreal Canadiens - 3: 2 CSKA won here! Also, CSKA is the record holder of the European Ice Hockey Cup, which won 20 titles, and from 1978 to 1990 did it 13 times in a row. Champions of European countries participated in the draws of this tournament. Therefore, CSKA can be called the strongest team of all time! Meetings of the owner of the Stanley Cup with the champion of the USSR, who became in the season in which the match took place: 12/29/1979 New York Islanders - CSKA - 2: 3 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 Meetings of the owner or finalist of the Stanley Cup with the champion or silver medalist of the USSR Championship, who became in the season in which the matches between them took place: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 01/11/1976 Philadelphia Flyers - CSKA - 4: 1 12/29/1979 New York Islanders - CSKA - 2: 3 12/29/1985 Calgary Flames - Dynamo (Moscow) - 4: 3 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 01/09/1990 Boston Bruins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 1: 3 09/13/1990 Spartak (Moscow) - Minnesota North Stars - 8: 3 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 As can be seen from the results, the USSR clubs on the field turned out to be stronger than the NHL clubs. Also, the symbolic team of the century included 4 players who played in the USSR championships and 2 players who played in the NHL. The six members of the symbolic team were chosen by voting organized by the IIHF. The selection committee included 56 hockey experts from 16 countries in Europe and North America. Symbolic team of the century: Goalkeeper: Vladislav Tretiak (USSR) - 30 votes. Defender: Vyacheslav Fetisov (USSR) - 54 votes. Defender: Börje Salming (Sweden) - 17 votes. Wing: Valery Kharlamov (USSR) - 21 votes. Wing: Sergei Makarov (USSR) - 18 votes. Center forward: Wayne Gretzky (Canada) - 38 votes In connection with the above, the USSR championship can be considered the strongest league in the world!

Russian skill are Impressive. Especially the crisp, passing. Swedes were good. However the Russians have a little more Grit. I always like Canadians, system. Every kid wanted to play NHL hockey. Canadians play dump/chase hockey. Grind it out along the boards. Hoping for a lucky pick bounce. European Hockey was more skill skating, passing. Russians in this era were the best. Hockey can be played differently. It’s still about putting puck in the net.

The Soviet Union Team would have won the 1987 Canada Cup Tournament if the Officiating was not so obviously Biased against the Soviet Team! At least the USA victory at the 1980 Winter Olympics over the Soviet Union was Officiated in a Fair way to Both Teams. USA Hockey needs to get back to properly preparing its Men's Teams for the World Championships and Winter Olympics with a much longer preparation period along with an intense preparation with its Physical Conditioning, Tactics and Goaltending Methods like Coach Herb Brooks did in 1979-80 before the 1980 Winter Olympics happened!

Mylnikov, Gusarov, Fedotov, Semenov, Pryakhin and Nemchinov. Six freaking players, almost third of the team! How on Earth you can judge something when you don't know the basic facts?! Can this rewriting of history be stopped?? Tarasov was no architect of Soviet hockey. He was the head coach of the USSR national team for only 3 seasons, from 1958 through 1960, and the national team lost all 3 world championships during that time (as well as the 1960 olympics).

Whoever wrote the script knows nothing about the history of Soviet hockey. Tarasov was not the architect of it at all! Actually, as the national team head coach (from 1958 through 1960) he lost everything, didn't win a single gold. He was an assistant to Chernyshev, the head coach of the USSR team, when the team won all those world championships and olympics from 1963-1972. What Tarasov undoubtedly was -- a master in self-promotion. So, everyone now thinks of him as the father of the Soviet hockey. There is also no evidence to suggest that Tarasov really wanted to play the NHLers, which might explain why both he and Chernyshev left the USSR team just a few months before SS-72.

Soviet Union drawing from a population of 250 million against Canada with a population less than a tenth of that. also the Soviets were playing for their livelihoods. hardly amateurs. Canadian players were coming from an individualistic culture and thrown together with a couple weeks practice. meanwhile USSR was playing in a system that they were all accustomed to. The national team was everything . For Canada that was hardly the case.
