Reality Bytes the fans happened, that's what. it was right after sammy left so fans were highly upset and gary cherone never stood a chance really. album sales dropped because of the huge hate campaign going on, when their live shows were actually really good. maybe that album was a bit too experimental though for most fans and they should've dropped an album with guaranteed party hit tunes first. then they could've gotten away with a concept album with tracks like dirty water dog, one i want, year to the day and josephina.

say what you want about gary cherone, live this line up gave us the best of both worlds and then some! think about it: when was the last time you got to hear those mk1 classics? also in hindsight those tracks from the van halen III album weren't half as bad as made out to be back then right after sammy hagar left. year to the day is definitely one of the very best van halen songs ever even comparing to every other song no matter what era. particularly eddie van halen seems rejuvenated here, as if he finally got the chance to step away from their trademark rock songs and dig a little deeper guitarwise. never heard his guitar sing this good since the 83 tour and his grooves are still unmatched. also great to see mike anthony sing somebody call me a doctor! Right you are Andrew. All great points.Mike can hit the high notes that even some lead singers won't try. And Cherone is the consumate vocalist. The roll down the stairs? A bit much. But with the band that's backing him... Hard not to get into the music. DLR who? His voice now sucks and he's just a parody of himself. Cherone is still making music. I fucking love Van Halen III. Its a great and sophisticated album. People don't appreciate it because they're stuck in time. Every single band keeps evolving all the time trying different things, experimenting. Gary was a great singer with a good voice and attitude. I really feel sorry for Van Halen having DLRoth back. I know people love him because of old Van Halen era. But that time is over now and its never coming back. Lee Roth is nothing but fucking clown with no voice whatsoever. I've been following Van Halen since 1984 and I can safely say that Dave among all those exVan Halen singers is a proper embarrassment. This whole 1998 VHIII tour was a fantastic full of energy show. Great Ed's performance and the rest of the guys.
@alcondragon

Most fans of Van Halen are not stuck in time as you say, they just don't like VH3 because it is totally sub-par to everything else that they have put out. I'm from Boston and watched (6 shows) of Extreme, Nino was a beast and they both fit together like a glove. Gary was out of place in VH. You may like it, and that is great for you, but to piss and moan that every other fan that doesn't like this, well that is just your opinion. You cannot force people to like what you do, so stop getting upset or angry over it, and enjoy what it is that you like! Rock on Dude!

@lennymadhavan3361

It all boils down to taste really. I got Van Halen III at home. For me it was just too different from the stuff there previously did. There are some good songs like ‘The One I Want’ (my favourite) and ‘Without You’ but other songs where a bit too intense for me. The songs on VHIII were more layered, more progressive and has more depth compared to the previous straight forward rock of the Roth and Hagar era. This radical change seems to alienate the Van Halen fan base. Gary Cherone himself is an amazing vocalist who is brilliant in Extreme and (whatever you think of the Van Halen III album) there is no denying the fact Cherone is good live with Van Halen. I quite like the Roth and Hagar years and there are musical gems in each era. However the problem with Roth and Hagar is each are reluctant to sings the other’s material which is understandable because both are different vocalists with differing styles. (Hagar would at least sing a few Roth numbers while Roth wouldn’t sing a single Hagar number). Cherone however is fully keen on singing numbers from both Roth and Hagar eras. His voice is very hard and at times very deep which makes it ideal for singing Roth numbers. Cherone’s voice also possess a good range which is enough can carry Hagar numbers. Personally I thought Mitch Malloy would have made a better singer. There are clips of him singing both Hagar and Roth numbers and I thought he sings Hagar numbers better than Cherone did…

In fact I was heartbroken when the original VH broke up in 85. Anyways, I learned to be more open minded over the years. Even accepting more and more Van Hagar as I got older and the years and decades flew by!!! And now I find myself accepting this short-lived version of Van Halen. I have to. Because it really is very good. I like it a lot. And I wanna give credit where it's due. That's all. They say you grow more humble as you get older. I gotta say that's proving to be true. If Ed was Smart, he should have used different band names for each version of the band. For a marketing reason. I just think people would have an easier time accepting each version. That's all.

Mikey fell victim to two things: his contract and lawyers. After the Balance tour, by going on tour with Sammy, Mikey voided his contract. He was still a member of Van Halen, while Sammy and Dave were not. Kind of like the difference between being an employee and being an independent contractor. As a result, when the band reunited with Sammy in 2004, Mikey had to take a significant cut in pay if he wanted to participate. He was no longer an employee of the band; he was an independent contractor. Sammy used to joke to the audience when he brought Mikey on tour with him and the Waboritas "Hey Mikey, do the Brothers know you're here?" Of course the Brothers knew he was there. At least the lawyers representing the band Van Halen knew Mikey was there. And they said: "Sorry dude, you work for us; you signed a non-compete. You can't be a member of two bands at the same time." Mikey even admitted that's what happened. Unfortunately, that's what's also preventing a reunion with all the original members.

Honestly, drama aside, my issue with Gary comes down to the same matter of preference that kicks in with the other two singers: vocal tone. I've got nothing against the guy, but I really don't care for his tone; I find it very grating. I had a similar problem with Sammy, albeit to a lesser extent. I prefer Dave's tone, which makes it all the more frustrating that he's spent years squandering it with lack of vocal exercise and aggressive smoking.

It is rocking the best to me from 88-95. So many of my favorite VH songs are there.Tokyo and Toronto shows are on fire. Sammy fit the band so well. If you like this,great. With this guy it's not for me.

Which singer you put, the soundtrack is by Eddy, for ever. VH 3 is not so good, but the tour was great. Im surprised how many haters here, Gary is a great singer with Extreme and very good with VH better than poppy Hagar.

Gary was definitely a bit flamboyant in this concert and his singing not that great (doesn't help that david and Sammy sang in different keys). But he did bring an energy that brought it alive. And definitely way better that roth is now

The Best Of with 2 new Dave songs sold 3 million upon release. A full album would have sold 6 million and be their 3rd Diamond album by now. EVH was a fool.
