My beautiful, smart wife died from cancer two months ago. I have been absolutely hammered with scams. I'm guessing they think I'm old (she was 40, I'm just a few years older; my beard went grey when I was in my mid 30s). On five occasions I have had people call me "from the IRS" telling me that I needed to pay them the "death tax." One lovely person was screaming at me with anger, saying that he had called the police and they were on the way to take me to jail. But I've gotten medical bills that don't appear real (I'm just now getting the real ones), and all kinds of odd scams via mail. They beat the actual doctors and hospital's billing. I firmly believe in people. I still do. But the small sliver of horrible people have been given incredible reach and the ability to mass disrupt the lives of everybody. It really should be stopped.

That is one sad story my friend. I also believe in the goodness of people and have no idea how these people can do what they do or what punishment is appropriate. Both my brother in law and mother in law have passed away in the last year and my wife is a mess. Add to that my niece's third suicide attempt, our oldest cat dying and now my brother in laws dog, whose life was Roy's only concern is way past his best before date. I also have a long history of abuse but that's another story. I just needed you to know someone is paying attention and has been where you are now. It will get better but I won't pretend to know when or how. Safe journey, take care of yourself.

@@secondthought2320 My only social media outlet is being a member of a diabetic cat forum. We have a separate page for those feeling grief mostly about pets. There's a lot of guilt and even shame about "I could have tried harder" and some people never get over it. We used to take in abused animals but stopped when both of us got compassion burnout. Through years of me counseling others in that forum I came across something called prolonged grief disorder, basically you just never get over it. It's now a legitimate psychiatric diagnosis and it's part of what affects me every day. I'm not a therapist but now I know it's not just me. You've been hit hard and whatever someone tells you it's okay to feel like crap for months or even years. Never let someone tell you to snap out of it or start dating again, it just doesn't work like that. My advice is always the same and as I've already said, take care of yourself first. Don't feel as though you're somehow obligated to reply, that's another guilt thing nobody needs.

I remember the old joke about computer translations over thirty years ago, when the phrase, "Out of sight, out of mind." was entered into an early computer and translated into Russian. Naturally, to check the veracity of the translation, the Russian statement was fed back into the same computer, which came back with the literal translation, "Invisible idiot."

11:20 - STEVE! I was in the middle of writing the following when you got here! ----- It sounds like the sender had a translation to their language from English of a summons... And they wrote a "summons" in their language and translated it back, using "formal" words thinking it would sound good. The problem is there are different words and phrases that don't translate... you can use an equivalent, but you won't find a direct translation. "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" is a good example... it can be translated in other languages to "When you empty the bathwater from the tub, don't hurt the baby" or "Remember to take the baby out when you empty the washtub after bathing" But the phrase can't be directly translated easily. It won't make sense in the target language. So if you translate to another language, and then rewrite it and translate it back, it won't work correctly and the words and phrasing will be off. And if you then take that text and pass some words through a thesaurus, using the most formal synonyms, it becomes even more awkward sounding. ----- Yeah - I hadn't watched the full video before starting to reply because I like to get my thoughts down so I don't forget them... I was still listening, and then Steve touched on the same thing I'd been thinking. Working with computers is fun. And I'm glad the anti-malware did its job! Too many people think it's not worth having antivirus software... and those are the people computer recovery services love to have walk in their door, because it's either going to be a few hundred / thousand dollars to recover the data, or it's a lost cause... and they still get to charge $50 for the review. Make backups Have valid antivirus software Make backups Have anti-malware too, either as an add-in or separate software Make backups Don't open suspicious email from unknown sources Don't download things from the internet unless you know the site is trustworthy And did I mention .... MAKE BACKUPS!!!!!

In school from back in the 1960's and 1970's I remember so many students saying to teachers. When will I ever need to know this stuff, garbage or nonsense??? Well. Over the last 60+ years. I do believe I can honestly say. At some point for so many reasons, I've probably used EVERYTHING TAUGHT, INCLUDING the SEEMINGLY INSIGNIFICANT things taught as just peripheral stories and fillers. I truly pity people from the generations that followed me, that didn't get such full spectrum educations. Especially those that thought cutting class, dropping out and that doing drugs was a much better easier way to grow up. True, not all teachers taught their subjects well, with enthusiasm or in ways that captivated their students. I see this as the school system's failure in every way. Although it's also true that because parents started to sue school system's over every little stupid thing lawyers thought they could make money for. I watch our school system actually publicly make the decision that the school system had a hard choice to make. Does the school system demand compliance of its students as it always had before. That there are simple rules that must be followed, children must act in a respectful way towards the school, teaching, bus drivers and others, along with showing respect for themselves and other students. Or does the school start to allow an anything goes new way of running the schools SO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM DOESN'T KEEP GETTING SUED OR ENDING UP IN VERY COSTLY LAW SUITS? Sadly the school system's all over the country had to allow the anything goes new schooling system's. The reason given way. Is it better that the school system properly does as it always has in order to teach as many students as possible properly. With the new problem being; expensive lawsuit. Which will bankruptcy the school system rather quickly. Or survive at all costs. This question was at the core of everything. Do we spend $1,000,000.00 to easily $5,000,000.00 or more to fight each lawsuit brought about by some parent, because we tried to get their child to learn to read, or do math, or say the pledge of allegiance, bring back homework, sit at their desk, take a test, or any one of thousands of reasons a student's parents could decide to sue the school system. The lawsuit doesn't even have to be one that can win. The costs would still bankrupt the system. OR does the school system just keep using their yearly budget to buy book, pay teachers, build and heat schools and so on. As best they can even with allowing students parents to dictate their stupid ideas for all students. My belief then and now The school system's should have pushed for the same or similar legal immunity as law enforcement has. Let schools teach. It's as important as law enforcement in the long run. There would probably be less criminals because these same kids would have grown up more capable of supporting themselves and to contribute to their neighborhoods just as past generations have. I could say so much more...

Scammers aren't interested in correcting mistakes. The people who are sharp enough to catch the mistakes are probably sharp enough to not fall for the scam. So, the see the mistakes, roll their eyes and don't respond. So, the people who do respond are those who aren't smart enough to see the obvious mistakes, and therefore have a higher probability of eventually falling for the scam. It's all about numbers, the scammers send out thousands of emails, and if everyone responded to the emails, they'd be buried in responses. By including obvious mistakes, they narrow down the responses to lower end of the intelligence spectrum.
