I've definitely heard the $20 bill story mentioned in one of his side stories, but I do believe this is the first time we've gotten the full story in its glory, at least that I've heard. And for that matter, Steve's ability to tell side stories in the midst of a main story to make a relevant point and without losing the thread of the main story is absolutely top-notch and I think a lot of people would overlook exactly how difficult that is to do, nevermind do it consistently on an almost-daily basis. Kudos.

But I remember it … Nobody tells a story quits like Steve Lehto. They stick with you. :-)

The paying in cash in front of the judge is definitely familiar. It reminds me of a prank I pulled on a friend. He was getting gas in the very early days of pay at the pump and he was still using cash. He goes inside to prepay the gas and I slip my card into the pump and start filling (gas was still under $1/gal at the time). As it's filling, the rest of us just watch him inside arguing with the clerk who doesn't speak much English about paying for the already paid gas. As Steve said in this story, worth the somewhere around $20 to see.

I admit that I am not the brightest bulb on the tree, but I fail to see how is this a victory for your client? Your client was victimized by the contractor and in spite of this he still paid him $20???? Now let me tell YOU a story. A Ukrainian immigrant I used to work with (a scientist) had a roof put on his house which was contracted through one of the big hardware store dealers. Whoever the store used as a contractor did a horrendous job! Ask me how I know? ..... I'm glad you asked that question. .... Because I used to be a roofer way back in my puppy days and I was intimately experienced with this exact type of roofing work (shingle roofing). Even to the untrained eye the work they had done was a debacle of intergalactic proportion. It was literally the worst job I have ever seen in my life. Not only did he refuse to pay for the contracted work, not only did he not pay them $20, but with the urging of his newly acquired American friends he reluctantly took them to court and got the contractor to pay for the roof they put on to be completely torn off and a new one put on (by a different contractor) to replace it. He did not expect to win the suit, but he did. He told me that he wrote home to tell his family and friends back in the Old Country ... "Me, a little guy like me, beat a big company in the American court." He said back where he was from he'd expect some goons to show up to encourage him to drop the suit .... or else. He and his family (wife and daughter) take their American citizenships very seriously, and anytime I have said anything against our system he replies, "America isn't perfect, no country is, but it is better than anything else in this world." And with this I shut my mouth. He has lived in both our system and the former Communist system. He has a right to make comparisons. I don't. Why in the hell didn't your client fry their ass in court?!
@ssl3546
8 күн бұрын
the client got work done (albeit not as much as the damage caused). when you get into a lawsuit you're never going to be made whole, netting the two claims was a not-terrible outcome. think about what Lehto's attorney fees would cost for a trial, plus the delay and uncertainty in judgment.

It’s not a victory. Lawyers always like to brag about how they and the system screws victims. In the first two minutes of the video he talks about he takes an oath to become part of the parasitic system. They are all parasites and they write laws and decisions so that only a parasite knows what is really being said. In this case the victim still needed to pay someone else to fix what the first party caused. Didn’t help the victim one bit. Not funny at all.

I was a lawyer. Once I was before a Human Rights Commission in a hearing over a discrimination claim. I represented the employer. The claimant/employee represented himself. The hearing officer (what they call the judge) read the allegations in the complaint and then asked the Company for it's position. I gave my opening statement for the Company and then the Claimant was asked for his response, but he did not state the amount ($) he was seeking. I presumed he just didn't know to do that. So I said, "Your Honor, we need to know how much money he wants." I suppose he was offended that I boiled it all down to money so he started to make a speech about how he was wronged by the employer -- unfortunately, he started with the words: "Your Honor, I don't care about money..." I interrupted him and asked the Hearing Officer, "Then want are we doing here?" The hearing officer then looked at the claimant and asked: "If you don't want money, then what ARE we doing here?" The poor claimant was stuck. Of course, he wanted money but he had said he didn't care about it, so he just mumbled something about wanting the Company to acknowledge that it had done him wrong. So I immediately (within seconds) apologized on behalf of Company for doing him wrong. Hearing Officer: "Case dismissed." The poor guy had no idea what just happened. Moral of the story: get a lawyer. Sorry this took so long...

Apparently it's happened before as well, between USFL and NFL. After failing several times to buy an NFL team, Trump bought an USFL team. USFL was playing summer football to fill in the void of the NFL off-season. Trump first cajoled the other owners to move to winter football, with disastrous results, since their whole idea was to fill TV time when there was no NFL on. and then with Roy Cohn had USFL sue NFL to force a merger between the 2 leagues. The merger was denied but they were rewarded one dollar. And it was settled by the grinning "loser", by handing over a dollar bill. Must have felt great.
