Really liking what I see here! I like Affinity *Photo* and *Publish;* *Designer* not so much. Plus, VS has the features missing from both Designer and Inkscape. Thanks for this video!

Hello, great review! A couple of observations: - the blend mapping tool can be used to map positions along one shape to another, controlling how the blend is created. Just hover over one outline and click to add a mapping point that can then be dragged. - warping text requires point text, otherwise the frame is warped. For point text, just click and start typing. - it does open and import native AI (not just PDF stream), including vector brushes, tiling patterns, styles and all.

I find Affinity Designer to be more streamlined. I see that VS has a bunch of tools under the magnet for editing skew, perspective etc and they are all their own tool where as Affinity Designer has these as context tool bar options under a single tool, the node tool. Also there are many tools for gradients here where as in Affinity this is handled by the Appearance panel which allows the application of multiple strokes and fills with blend options which can act like the free form gradient tool in Illustrator. I find designer more intuitive due to not having bloated the interface. Rather than tools there are additional contextually relavant options under fewer tools. Designer is missing a lot less than many think because it just does it differently. That said while I can work-a-round shape builder with the expand stroke, contour and Boolean geometry a shape builder that condenses the steps would be nice. Couple other tools would be vector brushes, warp and autotrace/selection to curve. The blend tool and many of the path effect tools in Inkscape I think shouldn't be separate tools but would be handled within a vector brush; again simplify, less tool bar bloat.

Is this program also very buggy for you? I tried it on the pc and it takes several; seconds to scale a cube, or to change the stroke, and it constantly crashes. Feels like everything is in underwater and slow/unusable. Is this only me?

8:07 if you double click on the node handle itself - it makes the node a corner. Vectorstyler does not have the option to pull handles into the center of the node like Illustrator. While I wish it also had this function, I really like the double click on the handle to quickly make it a sharp node

Ive never heard of this program. Ive been using Affinity since Beta and Have been using Adobe tools since 1.0 ( Thats PS ,AI, AE, etc). I bailed on Adobe when they went anti consumer/ user with their sub. Im always looking for new design tools. I live Affinity but theyve been far too slow on development for the tools the community has been requesting since 1.0 versions. This looks like it has most of the functions im missing from Affinity. I hope theres an easy way to go back and forth between programs. Ive tried going back and forth between illustrator and Affinity on projects and its always a nightmare.

I was also surprised that I had never heard of it, seems like a very robust program to have flown under my radar. If a commenter hadn't mentioned it I never would have known. You would have to use SVG files to switch back and forth, and I think you will run into a lot of the same problems with more complex documents.

Maybe because I'm an old wolf from Aldus Freehand days, I don't mind or care about having all these tools to achieve and create shape forms. I'm so used to do it everything myself that may be the reason I'm so happy with Affinity 2 Suite now. I mean, Vector Styler is on sale now so, of course I will grab that deal, but switching from Affinity Designer is not going to happen. Serif has created a trio of apps so well crafted and functional that it is impossible to ignore them just for a couple of features missing.

I think it's good. but the big lack of tutorials/help makes the learning curve almost insurmountable - for what I need to do. I also find it a bit buggy. The warp function with pattern fill is particularly important to me - but can't get it to work. Monitoring, but not switching anytime soon. Love Affinity Designer version 2 even with several missing basics.

I really hope that Affinity Designer will implement feauters like shape builder tool and image trace tool in next big major upgrade. I contact tham at the beginig of this year with question about these tools and they told me that they can not precise when that will be happend but that they are aware of designer needs for these tools. And one more thing, Affinity work at the same time on three software develop for Mac and PC so it is normal that we can not expect to have everything right now. I still believe that Affinity will become the best and closest alternative to Ai. Not to take anything from VectorStyler, kudos to them for excellent work with their software. Sorry for my English.

VectorStyler seems interesting! I'm not switching, but starting to worry if the switch to Affinity was a mistake. Affinity, in my opinion, has reached a point where they can't afford to keep putting off customers with bug fixes and insignificant feature additions. The hype around Affinity has long since faded, and if they don't deliver competitive tools, Affinity's success could end just as quickly as it began. The development cycle of Affinity was already poor back then (but customer requests were at least implemented), but now it has become so slow and quiet that rumours are now circulating, that development has more or less stopped, because Affinity is probably just hoping to be bought by a larger company. In Affinity's forum, you can also tell that Serif thinks they know better what customers need and don't need. This is a big mistake in my opinion. I mean, I understand that companies have the freedom to decide and choose what they want to work on and how and when they want to release their products. However, if you have started to make a lot of promises and make big speeches, you are obliged to live up to these promises. What Affinity really lacks are tools such as the image tracing tool, shape creation tool, blend tool, 3D text (e.g. extrusion capabilities), and most importantly: support for native third-party plug-ins/add-ons. Besides Illustrator, I'm aware of 3-4 different vector apps that have shape creation tools. Unfortunately, I have the impression that we can't expect much more from Affinity in the future. On top of that, Affinity refuses to become more platform independent. They became too fond of Apple and if Windows didn't have such a large market share, they would prefer to release their products only for Apple if they could. I mean granted, Serif isn't Adobe and they don't have the same financial resources as the big tech companies. But they are in control of how they want to run their business in the long run and they also have a wealth of customer data to draw on. So far, I'm still rooting for Affinity. My prediction is, that if the next major release doesn't include at least a few of the desired (competitive) tools that customers have been waiting for, then Affinity will have lost the trust and patience of many customers for many years to come. Affinity will continue to be used by many, but young enterprise customers will then think twice about relying on Affinity Apps for the long term. If that happens, I fear that other software companies will see this as an opportunity to shake up the market. I expect much more from a company that wants to present itself as an alternative to Adobe! If you can't do that, you should communicate that clearly to the customers so that the expectations can be adjusted to reality.

Hi Josua, thanks for sharing your thoughts! It does seem like we have had radio silence from Affinity for quite a while, with mostly only stability improvements for the past year or so. I'm hopeful for a 2.0 release that will see marked feature improvement, but we shall see if that happens. I'm sure the pandemic has delayed them like everyone, but it would be nice to at least get some word or preview on things. For me StudioLink changed the game in such a way that I am probably with Affinity long term unless someone else can introduce a feature like that.

I get the impression that Serif have boxed themselves in with the flat rate one time fee and free upgrades policy. Sounds nice but you don't get something for nothing and while it seems capable, I didn't realize how many features Affinity designer is missing that I'm just used to in AI.
