We haven't used Omnibus but my 2nd and 3rd grader will be using veritas press self-paced courses for our next school year in the fall for bible and history. We're using old testament and ancient Egypt and Genesis- Joshua. We used the free 2 week trial and my kids really liked it. I hope it works out well!

Oh Janelle. Thank you for doing this review. We use their elementary self paced history grades 2-6, and I am confident it is the best history education available. Also hands off for the parents. But I bulked at the omnibus this year for my 7th grader because of the Latin. I dont value that as veritas does. And I believe latin is a factor of the Primary. Wish I would have thought to think of the primary and secondary as independant subjects. My other hesitation beside the latin is that i did listen to one sample lecture on Creation. Exciting subject right? No! It was dry, as a bone, men droning on, audio poor. He did/is reading all the suggested books.

No Latin in the secondary course. I’m not sold on Latin either. It’s beneficial but not necessary in my opinion. We found this teacher very engaging and most of the interviews with experts interesting for omnibus 1 secondary. I’m sure it varies between the different courses. I’m interested in their history for younger ones now!

Hi there! Can I skip Chosen by God and The Best Things in Life? I don’t think I’d like those. I’ve seen blogs where you cannot skip through a lesson without completing the one you’re currently on- in the self paced option, is that true?

She took the Omnibus course in 8th grade. She would have loved to continue but God had other plans and we went with Starting Points from Cornerstone Curriculum for 9th grade and using BJU Press Distance Learning for 10th grade. Omnibus is such a great course though. So thankful for all the excellent curriculum options available for us today!

So, when you buy a self paced course....what else do you have to buy? A book package? A student workbook? Their website is very confusing to me.

Becky W I agree! The website isn’t very clear on what you need. I answered this question in my blog post review. You can read it here www.janelleknutson.com/2019/04/23/veritas-press-omnibus-review/

It's pricer than a lot of curriculum but you are paying for the excellent instruction and the fact that, as mom, you don't have to do anything. The self-paced courses from Veritas Press are ones I will be considering for different children in the years to come. I think this particular one would be great for all my kids to take at some point. I'm also looking at their history self-paced courses for younger ages. My daughter who took the course this year would like to take Omnibus 2 Secondary next year. I'm still mapping out her high school years so I'm still not sure what we will end up using.

If apply for Veritas dilly program. I don’t know about an entrance exam. The self-pace course is doesn’t give a diploma. They grade it for you add the grades for your child

Have you used any of the Omnibus self-paced courses?
@Cobb6391
5 жыл бұрын
Yes. My daughter used Omnibus III: Reformation to the Present, both Primary and Secondary Self-Paced courses. We both thought they were fantastic overall! I believe that they provided the richest education that she had throughout her time in high school! I would have liked for her to go through more Omnibus Self-Paced courses, but she really wanted to switch up the curriculum for some of the other years. We have similar perspectives theologically to you, according to your video above, so we were very happy with the things that were taught. Also, we did find some content in at least one of the books--Gulliver's Travels, I believe--that we didn't care for too much. However, Veritas Press does try to warn people in advance (I think in the introduction at the beginning of that big textbook) that they don't shy away from some material that some Christian parents might not want to expose their students to (particularly younger students). They explain that they do this so that students may learn to evaluate critically and biblically the things that they will encounter in this world, and they give that caution so that parents can evaluate the books beforehand, as you suggested for the Peter Kreeft book. Two other things that might be helpful: 1) There are some extended interviews with other people (in Omnibus III) that my daughter sometimes felt were a bit boring and could have been more concise. 2) Taking both the Primary and Secondary courses together covers a great deal of material, so it is not something that you want to fall behind in if you can prevent it. But she loved both of the instructors for the courses, and now she's excited that her younger sister is about to take them. :)

Great question. I know many wonder about this. It's important to know that curriculum can not be accredited. Schools are what get accreditation. Now some curriculum providers (such as Abeka) allow you to use their curriculum through their accredited online school. But it isn't Abeka (or any other curriculum) that is accredited. It's the online school your child is enrolled in. Veritas Press has an accredited academy you can enroll in but I don't believe their self-paced courses are part of the academy. (I could be wrong so make sure to double check with Veritas.) I hope that all makes sense. :)
