Holy shit those are much larger than I imagined! I'm a turbo hot rod hobbyist, builder and tuner, and a 2000-3000 HP gasoline V8 race turbo is substantially smaller than these monsters despite locomotive prime movers typically making that type of HP. But they have much lower RPM (900 RPM redline typically) and MUCH larger displacement... thus, MUCH higher torque. I guess it goes to show that torque is the real power not horse power.

No, dude, power is the real power. The reason that these engines spin so slow is for reliability and longevity, not because the engineers wanted more torque. The torque that the engine makes doesn't even go to the wheels, it drives an alternator, which turns the power that the engine makes into electrical *power*.
@yuribrandi8212

yeah what idontcare80 said, you're looking at a different application, diesel-electric engines are just giant generators, they don't need that much horse, just tons of torque to drive a alternator that in turn powers the electric engines (traction engines )it uses.. =) They mainly are such low revs to ensure longevity of the engine.
@PistonAvatarGuy

Actually, there are alternators that need very little torque to run (relative to this one) and make just as much power as this one, it all just depends on how the alternator was designed to work. There were some locomotives that used turbine engines instead of diesels, and they made relatively little torque, but at very high rpm, and that's just how they made their power. The higher the rpm that the alternator is designed to run at, the smaller it will be, so that can be an advantage. The problem with piston engines is that the bigger they are, the slower they must turn, because each turn of the crankshaft requires the piston to travel a longer distance as the engine gets bigger, which means that the piston moves faster during every revolution, unless you reduce the rpm of the engine. In other words: In order to keep piston speeds low, big engines turn slowly. In order to make a certain amount of power with an engine, it must make a certain amount of torque at a certain rpm, and the slower the engine turns, the more torque it must make in order to make its power, that's all there is to it. The engineers are only looking for a certain power output, torque is just whatever the engine happens to make.

Syclone0044 how long do you think your 3000hp engine can last at redline? These big ass engines last millions of km's at full power for decades. That's because they don't get heat soaked, the have huge displacements so little boost goes a long way, the have 100's of liters of oil that is kept cool. It's the same thing as big rig engines, the ferrari could do the same power, but in short bursts, the big rig can do it for 10 hrs straight for years, with only oil changes and basic maintenance in between. The bigger something is, the more it will last really.

Syclone0044 torque is how hard it turns. Power is a function of torque and rpm. You can take a tiny toy car motor for example. It has a high rpm but you can stop it with a finger. Now attach a gear reducer with several stages and it has a low rpm but it's not so easy to stop it with a finger anymore. It's still making the same power though.

To idontno,these big engines spin slow because they'd fly apart much over 1000 rpm ,,to much mass spinning around and you're correct on longativety slower speeds add up to less piston speed ie fewer trips up and down the liner!

@RealNotallGaming

semi-finished parts between blades arent for "wind stream", so "clock" is useless in that position, it can measure nothin but 0,05mm :P the real 0.01mm is on the blades . just VERTEA workers are there for cameras XD (polishing near oil, polishing without mask, mounting near polishing, storage magazine for parts without oil or plastic covers O.O WTF moment when you realize that maintenance is because people are incometent workers XD )

you must know how the piece is done, for measure the piece :D is a fact. i know how the pieces are maked 1) because i work on CNCs 2) because just using YT you can have some videos of CNCs doing all mechanic parts that used in the whole world, and you will know how pieces are maked. the red piece, the body is refined with tolerances like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p4R64J2Dh6qBio4 and the rotor and blades of turbo are maked like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKebtqaYnnOCooI XD the music...... however :D you must measure the rotor for movement in the ball bearings other parts are perfect and blade is hold on rotor so only movements are rotation and movements of the rotor\blade in the hole = wrong build up sorry for the poor english.....im italian XD
