American workplace logic never ceases to baffle me. As if the rules are made by 7 year olds.....'no you can't bring no no stuff but its ok to look in someone else's bag' . Nice move on Vespers part though. Over here he would have been applauded.

Omg your trying to make the guy s*** his soul out through his anus, aren't you? (Not that it's not a brilliant idea, cause it'd teach the thief to not touch your food again, most likely due to PTSD, But good lord man)

My solution to the lunch theft problem is to set up a trap camera in my lunch box. (Honestly not that difficult with modern tech). One of two things happens now 1. I have a picture of someone getting into my lunchbox Or 2. There is a bigger problem for HR to deal with as someone either broke or stole my property and not just food (the more expensive the better)

Had a similar situation once. I printed out a meme of Driver Nephi from Fallout: New Vegas saying "Get Fucked" and stuck it in my lunch bag and put it in the fridge. Meanwhile, I had a beach cooler with my real lunch in my car. Did that for about a week. Suddenly, the thief stops stealing lunches. Never found out who, but one guy at work was suspiciously hungry that week sooo...

Yea, I'm sorry. Your lube being hidden in your property seems fine. It's not bothering anyone there. Screw people who feel the need to steal, or at the very least go through, other people's property. I think the other person was just mad that he had to miss lunch that day...

This is brilliant and you should have stuck to your guns. Someone stole my dr pepper and its a relatively small company and i found out that day who did it(some FNG). I was on the warpath, because it left me without a drink for my lunch. General rule: if it isn't yours, dont muck with it.

Eh. Maybe file a formal complaint first, get the gears of bureaucracy oiled up. If HR refuses to assist or hems and haws on the issue, then seek legal advice. Anything else is kinda pointless. Sure, you'll *feel* good by screwing someone over with peppers or laxatives, but you open yourself up to legal liability--especially if office politics is so bad in your workplace that you're the one who's getting in trouble instead of the guy/gal stealing food.

Reminds me of the time that I was being bullied and harassed by a manager and I reported it. Guess what? I got fired. They didn’t. And I live at a will call state so I can’t do nothing. Coworker also threaten to harm to an manager and stolen food and wasn’t fired either. The only good karma is that my job closed down during the coof.

If my food was being stolen I'd start bringing decoy food absolutely doused in malic acid. People can love spice but its a lot harder to eat a turkey sandwich that tastes like it got dipped in warhead sour powder.

Note for anyone dealing with that, a light-based alarm works great, or a motion camera since those only take a shot when they can see something different from the last photo.

Rookie. You were suppose to take it out of your lunch box after lunch, so they'd get in trouble for filing a false report. Might have been able to get them fired for harassment, too.

"I don't know how he would be expected to know what's in my lunch tote without looking inside it himself, which would mean he was invading my personal property. But this is a baseless accusation which he can't prove... no, you may *not* go through my personal items. Now, I'd like to report this individual for abusing the workplace report system and making defamatory statements against me. He levied a negative claim for which he couldn't have known against me in an official manner. As evidence, I submit this very disciplinary hearing and the report which prompted it. As a personal request, I'd like HR to administer the disciplinary action in his @$$... if lube is required, he'll have to provide his own."

heard it live, but this story still makes me angry. in what world do you get in trouble for bringing a personal item in your own bag to work, as long as its legal. massive red flag for that workplace right there and i think he also had some other stories that might've been from that place that didnt make it look good, to put it mildly. for reference, i think the "proper" way to do it would be to report to your superior/the boss first that your lunch repeatedly gets stolen. if they just go "no proof", do what vesper did (or someone in the comments recommended rigging it with a personal alarm, which would work well). if they are shitty about it, like in vespers case, make a disciplinary complaint to the relevant agency/authority, if your country or state has something like that, or even report it to the police. cause some _actual_ trouble for them, if they want to avoid dealing with this problem. also look around for a different place, because screw that.

Frankly I'd have just gone with spicy food for a week or two. I like moderatly spicy stuff and can handle very spicy stuff if I'm expecting it. For reference I'll eat jalapenos strait off the plant like most people would eat sweat peppers. if asked why I tried to harm the coworker like that I'd just say thats how I wanted my lunch and eat it in front of the manager without batting an eye. Not my fault they couldnt handle the heat of their theft. In the off chance the theif actualy likes food that hot that tends to narrow down the pool of people it could be dramatically.
