How sturdy is its cable? The Amazon reviews like the model but complain the cable breaks when using it to roast coffee...?

We think both the cable and housing are built to last and haven't come across any issues when using it.

What wattage hot plate do you recommend for roasting with this setup? Please and thank you. 1500w?

The model we used has a 1800w high power setting but it shouldn't matter all that much as long as your cooktop gets hot enough for cooking food or boiling water.

@@SweetMariasCoffee you might try starting with a lower heat and ramping up. Because they are not tumbling like in a drum roaster, a hot charge might not be for the best? You get a more event roast. Just my 2cents.

what sold me was the price vs the $450 dollar unit and I can roast a pound rather than 1/4 pound with my hive roaster. That cost more than this one! oh and this one will save me pain in my shoulders from al the shaking I had do with the hive roaster. we live and learn. sigh

Got this as a gift. I've been roasting outside with an induction burner which is great because it moves all the smoke outdoors! But it's certainly very different than my normal stovetop roasting. Any additional tips for this roaster with induction method would be welcome. For now I am avoiding "reverse cranking", as I assume the unit is using a flex cable which would have a preferred twist and fear that backwards cranking would tend to weaken the cable. Any opinions on this? I always found occasional reverse cranking to help distribute the beans when using Whirley-pop.

How's the durability of this system vs. Whirlypop with metallic gears? After like 20 or so roast my metallic gears start wearing out and hate throwing away the lid and getting a new one.

The drive system in the Victorio is much more durable than the WhirleyPop, especially compared to the metal gear model. Consider replacing your lid. We actually found that the plastic gears last a lot longer than the metal ones. You can buy them off the WhirleyPop website but if you decide to upgrade to a Victorio, we would love to sell you one.

@@SweetMariasCoffee thank you! I did try squirting olive oil into the gears to reduce that friction wear, but it may have been too late. If I end up going the Victorio route for sure will get it from you guys. I appreciate yalls business get all my green coffee from you guys!

I just purchase one of these, and I was wondering if I could still use it for popcorn after roasting coffee in it. Do you know or have you tried? I just don't want my popcorn to taste like coffee afterwards.

To be honest, we haven't tried but if you keep the pan clean and free of oils and stains, you should be able to pop popcorn without any coffee aroma. Let us know how it comes out.

What temperature do you recommend for preheating? I bought the kit from Sweet Marias a couple of years ago, and the instructions that came with it at the time recommended 200 degrees F. Lately I've seen a lot of people online recommending 400-500 degrees F though, saying that starting at a lower temperature would result in the beans "baking" and tasting bland and lifeless. That hasn't really been my experience, but am curious if it makes a difference. I like the lower temperature because it produces less smoke and the color comes out really consistent, but am I missing out on flavor?

We recommend experimenting with raising the temperature as your roast progresses. Keeping it at a low temp the whole time will result in baked flavors but starting off at too high of a temp will result in "tipping" or burning of the ends or edges of the beans.

@@SweetMariasCoffee Thanks for responding! I usually preheat to 200-250 and then let it slowly rise. It hits first crack around 13-15 minutes which is usually around 300 degrees. From there I let it rise to 350 and then I pull it off the heat to start cooling - usually 17 to 20 minutes into the roast. Do you think I'm leaving it at a low temperature for too long? I feel like my coffee doesn't taste baked but I also might just be used to it.

@@Bu1lock It sounds like you have the framework down for a good roast but in the end it's all about how it tastes. We wouldn't recommend taking the roast any longer but try shooting for a shorter roast with a quicker rise in temp and see how it tastes.

Hi, this looks like a great home roasting option. Could you share ball park timing to do a 1lb dark roast? I have an external propane burner, so I think I would be able to get the roaster hotter than a typical stove top.

About 7 or 8 min. We suggest starting off with a half pound to start off. 1lb roasts can get a little tricky around 1st crack.

I found this on amazon and some of the reviews are concerning about durability and how long the stirring mechanism lasts. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0148LA5VK/ Several reviews have warned of the mechanism breaking after several months or more. The company seems to be supportive in terms of sending out replacements but this can't be a good thing if it happens frequently.

I talked to Victorio and all of the units now have the new Flex drive cable. They cautioned to buy from a reputable brick and mortar or Amazon, Sweet Marias etc to ensure that you don't get old stock.

Very interesting design with out the gears, I have 2 SS stovetop roasters both have the gears, your thoughts about putting something over the wire stirrers inside is a good idea, Or maybe if there is enough room drill the shaft and add another set of wires a bit higher so you would have two low and two high in an X pattern. For me I roast 2 - 3 cups at a time and I am good for a week, I use a BBQ Stainless steel mesh colander and a very large SS pan to pour from one to the other outside to cool off the roast. Yes, but you have to use flaver lazerz. Just kidding. Lazer thermometers are a good quick reference, home roasting tool, especially for roasters that don't allow for thermometers to be installed.

As with all roasting techniques, there is a learning curve but if you understand the relationship of 1st crack and roast levels, you should get good results quickly. FYI, larger batches can be more difficult.

Just buy a 12V DC motor and motorize it! It's easy and can be done in a couple of hours!

The chaff stays with the coffee as it's roasting. You can separate it out later outdoors with a fan or by transferring the coffee between two different containers. The chaff will float away from the coffee since it's so light.
