The escapism in videogames is something I've enjoyed so much; there's been many moments in my life out of my control where the only way I could hang on and push through the rough patches were just standing by, letting the storm pass with a game on my hands. Amazing video

9:25 I 100% agree with you on this one. People have wondered why I don’t like books or movies but like video games, and it’s because books and movies always have the same result every single time; in games, every decision made can and most likely will be different from a decision made prior, and I’m the one who made said decision. Really well put together video (also it’s awesome to hear you studying to be an engineer 😁).

This is actually why games are the strongest medium in which to explore time loop and cyclical narratives. It's a lot easier to make it feel less repetitive if you're playing through the game yourself, rather than reading or watching someone do the same thing over and over.

Very thought provoking. Not exactly what I expected either. The time investment has become an actual problem as I age. I have to work more and enjoy more physically active hobbies, and need to engage those activities; aging isn't pretty people. As an undervalued employee, I can honestly say I appreciate the work that goes into this art form. Always have, always will. It's an escape that's woefully needed in this world. Nice video!

I've recently discovered your channel through your videos on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass. You're an entertaining fellow! As for video games...they are my go-to escapism. I am particularly drawn to the Mario series; it plays host to a wide variety of genres of games, like platformers, kart racing, sports, party games, and RPGs. Not to mention there's a colorful cast of lovable characters. With Mario games, I can easily get lost in the imaginative world of the Mushroom Kingdom and be guaranteed a good time. Playing the sports and party games gives me a rich palate of playable characters. There are lots more things I love about Super Mario, but I'll show some self-control. Nice video, Captain Astronaut. It's good to see an extensive look at what defines the art of video games. I try not to practice a toxic attitude...for the most part.

I genuinely don't want to work for a big game company for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, lack of creative input and the blatant employee abuse being the big ones. Most likely, my game dev stuff will just be as a hobby that I *MAYBE* make like, $15 off of, but that's fine by me so long as I can make the game *I* want to make without the abuse. Don't get me wrong, I'd *LOVE* to make a living off of my game dev stuff, but it doesn't feel worth it to sacrifice my own creativity for it, y'know? :P (Not that enough people would play my stuff to make that possible anyway. Lol)

I fuckin hate it when people call devs lazy when passion and shit is almost a prerequisite for the job. Hell I've seen it happen in smaller dev team games where even the leadership of the studio/company are og well liked figures. Like sure the industry is pretty bad and is a great showcase of how greedy shit can get but holy crap. My point is that gamers (derogatory) suck 🤷♂️

9:52 Oof, putting live streams and podcasts below short form video production.. I think you'd need to split off "standard" short form video (like 10-15 minute long KZitem videos) from the super short form video (like everything on Tik Tok and KZitem Shorts), since I would argue that those super short videos have little to no value, like comparing candy to a meal. Even streaming is more "nutritious" than shorts imo And still images, or rather, "photography".. I mean, no offense, but live streams are still infinitely more interesting

They are weird. But at the end of the day video games are an art form. A piece of work made by an individual or team to be shown off and experienced by the world. Be it 8-bit, 4K, or something in between. I mean just got done playing as a Cyborg Ninja, Slashing Cybernetic Gorillas using a Polearm made of actual arms, all while Arguing Philosophy with terrorists. That’s pure chaos and I love it Don’t even get me started on Music, from big name mascots like Sonic, to Indi Titles like No Straight Roads. I like Videogame music more than the majority of “real” songs out there.

"It is really hard to get a convincing performance in a video game because its a such collaborative process. You need good writers, good actors, good animators all together all working in tandem at a consistantly high level to get a good performance and on top of that you have to graft that work onto highly volatile program and pray to shadow jesus that it somehow remains intact." by videogamedunkey, video game acting, Act 1 (Battle at Don Cheesle's Island) And yeah some of the so called "gamers" are really weird do dos.

Great video as always and you pretty much summed up all my thoughts on the medium as a whole. Understanding how meticulous and backbreaking they are to make really makes you appreciate them all the more. It's an expensive hobby and an even more expensive profession. All in all, video games are incredibly weird and I love them for it. Oh yeah, let's watch Captain Astronaut swing a bat at hornet's nest lmao While I generally agree with the sentiment you're trying to express, all art is participatory in that simply by perceiving and interpreting the art you are participating in "creating" it. A book has no meaning until someone reads it, and every person who reads a book takes something different from it. That's getting pretty close to a definition of "art". If you ask somebody in fine art/media studies what a "painting" is you're going to get a similarly complex vague answer. I suppose it's more accurate to say that most *commercial* art tries to be as one-sided as possible, crushing audience participation in favour of control, but in video games you inherently need participation from the audience (even if it's only clicking one button over and over, or picking from a small selection of choices).
