I served over 6 years in D Co. 2/502nd, 101st ABN but from 1986-93 and we also had some unique things we did to our Kevlar PASGT helmets. Only Airborne qualified Grunts in our unit were allowed to wear the nape pad at the rear of the helmet, it was an unspoken rule allowed. We never had our battalion symbols on the side of our helmets, that started after 2001 when units deployed overseas. We all used gutted 550 chord for camo band retention straps which had two on each side of the helmet and the 550 was routed through the camo cover slits then under the Kevlar helmet and tied around the suspension anchor screw points. Back in 1986 we were all issued 2 sets of OD green 4th pattern jungle uniforms to be used as “field uniforms” for training exercises that was a force on force scenario. So if someone is wearing a Kevlar helmet and old jungle uniforms, you’ll know it’s correct. They quit issuing the OD’s in 1988. We hated the CFP-90 rucksack because the shoulder strap yoke easily broke and the aluminum strips that made the pack more rigid kept working their way free and sliding down to the back of our heels and stabbing us on long road marches. I once saw a fellow Grunt take his ruck and threw it into the wood line out of anger for stabbing him, lol. The older Alice ruck was lighter and actually better than the CFP-90 so the Division dumped the CFP-90 and went back to the ALICE ruck, I used an Alice ruck for both the Gulf War and OIF 1. We always made some fine tuning to our helmet since we’d be wearing them all the time. If it wasn’t adjusted properly it would give you a headache or wobble around as you ran or did rough maneuvering.

Jack, helmet graffiti is a personal preference of the person who is wearing the helmet. There do exist some covers with little to no graffiti as well, so it really boils down to personal preference. Now, in regards to reenactments, let people be. Helmet art and customization is completely up to the owner of the helmet, meaning that they can theoretically write anything, such as something absurd, or leave it completely bare, without graffiti. Good day. -Ron
