The B52 was a very effective bomber. I saw a B52 air drop of bombs near Con Thein close to the DMZ. This was September of 1968. The bombs while exploding shake everything I remember looking down at my trousers while the bombs exploded. My trousers were trembling or shaking similar to a windstorm created by a category five hurricane. Very impressive weapon of war.

The NVA was prepared for tactical fighter attacks, not the deep penetrating bombs of the B-52's dropping their loads close to the base perimeter. For a change the B-52's were not wasting their bombs on suspected enemy troop areas in the jungle, but actual concentrated NVA divisions. Tunneling and digging in close to the Khe Sanh perimeter offered zero protection from the mighty B-52. Thanks for posting this because it sure as hell never made the news !

Arc light strikes saved the day more than once at khe sahn for sure. My grandad was a flight engineer aboard a c130. He said anytime they went up north to k.s. they'd chop up a few brooms so they could plug up holes. If the hole was larger than a broom stick, you'd tape a couple together to plug up 20mm, 37 mm so on and so forth.

My dad is a USAF Viet vet. I asked him about this battle. He told me that he had been attached to the 4133rd Bomb Wg during this time. The 4133rd, a Wing of B-52's was in Guam and flew hundreds of missions to Khe Sahn. Further, he was so proud of the Marines for giving the finger to the overwhelming number of the enemy. He later ran into a Marine that was there during that time. When the Marine found out the my dad was with the B-52's he took him to a bar and would not let him buy a drink.

And then when he was still a child he and his family fled from China because of the cultural revolution and he also explained that his father built a boat so he they could reach Hong Kong. Sadly thousands of boat people from Vietnam never made it through the sea. The end of this war was a total chaos and history repeated itself during the fall of Kaboul.

Khe Sanh is unbeatable we lost so many soldiers, there was no way, it was impossible. US soldiers were so trained and they had the most advanced technology in the world, they never ran out of ammo, bombs. The only thing we had was never given up. That why we won. - told by a Vietnamese soldier who luckily survived multiple battles of Khe Sanh in 1968. Normally you die in the 1st battle.

They lost way more soldier's which to be honest came from 3 countries total so America wasn't just fighting the Vietnamese ppl. @Lachausis You are on to something regarding North Vietnamese MiGs and the Chinese border. The MiGs frequently used the trick of taking off, orbiting just across the Chinese border and wait for the right situations or advice from radar operators to attack. No, it wouldn't surprise me if they landed and refueled there. The chief limiting factor being the short combat range and lack of air refueling for the MiGs. American pilots had a term for this enemy tactic but I can't recall right now.

Exactly right, "broken arrow" basically creates a wall of fire and flying Steel around the American unit, this kind of thing was tried unsuccessfully in WWll cuz they didn't kno the magical qualities of NAPALM, so much better than a common incendiary because it coats and sets on fire whatever it comes in contact with, obviously especially helpful in the jungle where a normal bombs effect is attenuated. Naturally precision is key, obviously I only know what I've read or saw on TV but I guess they got it down to a pretty precise science

VC got a big lost in Khe Sanh Battle! * Among of 8 crimes that Do Muoi( Late Communist Party Secretary in Chief) - Le Duc Anh(Late Communist Vietnam President) alliance accused Giap of, there were four in the military category: "During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, Mr. Giap was a coward, afraid to die so he's just hanging around in his banker so far away from the front line, not even daring to dare of going out. Nguyen Chi Thanh was the commander of the campaign. Mr. Giap assessed that the situation was poor, hastily disbanded 80,000 troops, so that when France and the US returned, they would not have enough troops to support. During the Tet Offensive 1968, Mr. Giap said that the US would use an atomic bomb to attack Hanoi, so he asked to take a vacation in Moscow to take a safe refuge. Mr. Giap was a coward, afraid of US B-52 carpeting, so he didn't go to "B"- battle field( South Vietnam battle). He had never dared to set his feet in the southern battlefield during the Vietnam War before 1975." And basically, what Do Muoi and Le Duc Anh said are right and not wrong. ** Giap is an "Army Roasted General"( Never care about his men) “In 1968, when Vo Nguyen Giap used 3 Infantry Divisions and heavy artillery to encircle with the tactic of using more beating less(the “sea of people”-tactic) to destroy 6,000 US Marines and about 200 ARVN/ARVN Rangers on Khe Sanh Hill, Quang Tri. But they couldn't take it, in return, the North Vietnamese communist side was carpeted by the B52- flying fortress and be destroyed more than 10,000 to 15,000 communist soldiers including the damage of other aspects such as military tools, tactics, and thousands of VC . The book, "The Siege of Khe Sanh" by Robert Pysor describes how much of the intelligence on the numbers of NVA and most of the planning assumptions regarding the resupply of the base by air, were entirely wrong. Notwithstanding the propaganda of this video, resupply by air essentially failed with the defenders several times coming perilously close to running out of ammunition, particularly when their ammo dump was hit by NVA artillery and blew sky-high! The fact is that Westmoreland's planners knew about the inclement weather on the plateau since they were told by the people living at Khe Sanh and so it proved that flights were frequently unable to get through with supplies. As usual, the generals, specifically Westmoreland were determined to fight the previous war, WW2 since that is what they knew. Whilst 40 000 NVA were supposed to be around the base, the several massive B52 strikes and many other bombing attacks, left little to no trace of dead or wounded, or of discarded and damaged weaponry as was discovered when troops later entered those areas. B52s were authorised to bomb within 800 yards of the base perimeter. This is an indication of how serious the situation became as strategic bombers were previously never used so close to friendly lines as the danger of deaths through "friendly fire" was considered too great. As another US general commented using a boxing reference, "Khe Sanh was an unsound blow in the air." Basically the farce planned and engineered by Westmoreland ended his career.

@truffyt Vietnam was divided in 1954 during the Geneva peace conference. The signed (not by the USA) stated that there was to be elections in 1956 and that the the countries were to unify afterwards. The SOUTH though never held these elections, and the countries weren't unified. The south was as undemocratic as the north was. And then eventually the north invaded the south, and since the western world didn't want the eastern bloc to gain influence, they supported the south.

The ABCs of Salvation, or how to be right with God, and know you're going to Heaven: A-dmit that you're a sinner, and need a Savior. As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one. Romans 3:10 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 B-elieve that Jesus Christ died paying the penalty for your sins, and rose from the grave. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures... 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 C-all on the Lord Jesus Christ to save you, and trust only in Him for your salvation. If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 The moment you "believe," or, put your trust in what Jesus has done for you, God saves you and your eternal destiny in Heaven is assured. You go from spiritual death to eternal life the moment you believe. Jesus said it this way: Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. It was a siege. They were surrounded by 2 divisions of NVA. The fact that the Marines could conduct daily patrols was an acknowledgment by the NVA of how lethal the Marines were in close battle. The NVA gave the Marines a lot of room. Prior to Marines arrival it was a Green Beret outpost.

Korea and Vietnam broke the back of Communism. These two wars were not fought in vain as many think, they achieved the goal that weakened and subsequently broke the stronghold. Russia and many other Countries come to mind.

@pobinr after USAF massive bombing of french cities in 1944/1945, would you agree the same way, if an ordinary french civilian had joined german troops and kill GIs ? Remember that the same vietnamese civilians you're talking about voted "with their feet", and left their country, by all means of transportation available, soon after their "liberation", a thing that never occured before in history. Piracy, rape, theft and threat could not stop the stream Alain from Paris, France

@Lachausis No problem, with character limits and such, it is easy to misread. Regarding the fighter bases, it was the Korean War where MiG's would fly from Manchuria, China..across the Yalu and into Korean airspace. The North Vietnamese airbases were indeed on the no-bomb list, in the Vietnam "conflict". Too many Soviet or Chinese advisors present there to risk an international incident. The actual shipping docks at Haiphong were also on the no bomb list, which is why we resorted to mines.

Westmoreland brought in nuclear physicists to study the possibilities of use of tactical nuclear weapons as the last resort defence of Khe Sanh. They concluded it was possible as the area was isolated from larger population centres and winds etc generally favourable. LBJ on learning of this possibility came down like a ton of bricks on Westmoreland! Some claim that this was the beginning of the end of Westmoreland's career and he was recalled to "other duties" not long after the siege of Khe Sanh was over.

All we needed was for the politicians to stop interfering. If they had mined Haiphong Harbor in 1965 and bombed the North it would have been over in six months.

Years ago, I read what a retired North Vietnamese colonel had to say when asked if the US ever could have won. He said, yes, if they severed the Ho Chi Minh trail and did an overhaul of South Vietnamese leaders because too many of them were corrupt and inept. I have not heard anyone say anything more sensible on the subject than that. I think the second thing would have been harder to accomplish than the first.

Those US troops shouldn't be fighting in Vietnam in the 1st place. If the American peoples shouldn't have voted Democrats President Truman, JF Kennedy, and LB Johnson to be their commander in chief for their country. American peoples voted them to be their commander in chief for their country. And the Vietnamese peoples in Vietnam had to paid the pric

Political or military..who cares..? VN was an American disaster which of course goes hand in hand with Laos and Cambodia. And those who still believe that no battle was lost in VN should get a ticket to the next public library and get the historical facts straight. Please read the (auto)biographies of McNamara, Westmoreland, Nixon, Nolting and Bunker (US embassadors to South VN). And even Kissinger had something to say. (1)

@rampking1 I thought you were sarcastic in your previous comment. As far as I know most North Vietnamese fighter bases were located just across the border, in China. If they were in North Vietnam, they would surely be bombed, because military targets were not discriminated. And I don't see why any fighter base should be spared in that situation.

@Riot454di The only ones invading something were North Vietnamese. South Vietnam had a government and were in fact US allies. US never invaded North Vietnam.
