Lutyens Trust America Webinar hosted by Marcos Lutyens and Executive Director, Robin Prater.
We explore the theme of the World War I Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, a poignant creation by UK architect Sir. Edwin Lutyens. In November we always cover the theme of war memorials which is linked to Armistice Day on Nov 11 each year. Our past webinars which are now on our Lutyens Trust America youtube channel have included the Thiepval Memorial, The Irish National War Memorial Gardens and the Cenotaph.
Today’s virtual gathering presented by the Lutyens Trust America together with the UK-based Lutyens Trust brings together esteemed speakers who bring a wealth of expertise and personal connections to the topic.
Candia Lutyens, daughter of Sir Edwin Lutyens’s only son Robert, and an alumna of Oxford University, has a unique perspective on the legacy of her grandfather's architectural brilliance. Co-founding Lutyens Furniture & Lighting in 1988, Candia ventured into the world of design while simultaneously navigating the financial realm in the City of London. Having devoted herself to Lutyens Furniture & Lighting full-time since 2002, Candia's insights into the intersection of heritage and contemporary design promise to enrich our understanding of Edwin Lutyens’s contribution to the Villers-Bretonneaux memorial. Candia is an enthusiastic photographer, Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, and principally interested in photographing architecture in the landscape.
Also joining us is Jon Gedling, a Chartered Building Surveyor with a distinguished career overseeing the care and upkeep of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s memorials and structures globally. His extensive background in managing major conservation projects, including roles with the Royal Household Property Section and Eton College, positions him as a key authority in the preservation of historic estates. As an Assessor for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a member of Historic England's Historic Estates Conservation Committee, Jon's expertise will provide invaluable context to the discussion.
Together, Candia Lutyens and Jon Gedling will guide us through an exploration of the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, shedding light on its historical significance, architectural brilliance, and the ongoing efforts to preserve its legacy. Villers-Bretonneaux in Northern France was an especially key place in WWI as it was a gateway to Amiens and for that matter Paris, and it was where the turning point of WWI happened as the final offensive of the German army was repulsed in 1918 which helped speed up the end of the war.
We look forward to an insightful and engaging conversation that bridges the past and present, honoring the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I.
